Finds processing (often called pot washing), includes the washing, marking and sorting of bulk finds from archaeological sites and is a very important part of the post-excavation process.

The most common bulk finds are bone and pottery, but other material such as metal, slag, flint, shell, wood, small pieces of tile, brick and other building material will also be placed into the bags on site.

Investigators can count or weigh bulk materials such as brick, mortar, plaster, shell, and gravel in the field or lab with only a representative 10% sample retained. Bulk material samples submitted for curation may not exceed 250 grams (10.5 oz.) each without prior approval by the Division of Archaeology.
