Me Too, But... 17:39 Apr 22, 2021
I volunteered just about every Sunday at a state-of-the-art continuing care center in Oberlin, Ohio, for about 8 years, using my conversational and reading skills (I read a section of one of my literary translations to one resident) in French (mostly), Spanish, and Italian with selected residents, at least two of whom were quite famous in their fields (one was a Holocaust survivor, and one of her friends, as well as her, were translators). I never talked at all with them about anything at all that had to do with "giving up". Instead we talked about different experiences they had during their careers and about their families. I only hope that my visits brightened their days, if only a little, before it was time for them to pass, and for me to pass on to to other things. |
