This group includes different breeds of small terriers and dachshunds.

And here is another site with a list of breeds (section 6) eligible to participate in earthdog tests:

agree  Yelena.: из словаря: Earth dog - a dog that will dig in the earth, or enter holes of foxes, etc.
4 mins
-> Hunting dogs -

terrier

Explanation:
I think thqat your initial guess is right and "terrier" would be the closest translation. The only dogs which go into burrows are terriers. I do not know if there any further gradations among terriers (burrowing terriers?)

Please don't make 20-kg Airedale Terrier creep through holes!

Explanation:
I looked through a couple of dog encyclopedias and my suggestion is 'rabbit/fox hunting dogs'. Obviously, Dachshund (originally meaning 'badger dog') is about the only one to penetrate holes.

an earthdog

Explanation:
Dachshunds and smaller terriers belong to the category of earthdogs.

NB: earthdog - spelt as one word.

Hunting dogs are subdivided into several categories. Among these, there are hounds (including a number of breeds), pointing dogs, retrievers, earthdogs. Each of these require different training. Some breeds can be more versatile - pointing dogs and retrievers, for instance. If trained, they can both point and retrieve. Earthdogs, however, generally serve just one this purpose. They are not unearthing dogs - if any unearthing needs to be done, then it\'s the hunter\'s job, who, with a spade or anything suitable for this purpose, unearthes the burrow trying to rescue the dog. Sometimes the burrows are very deep and complex, and it happens that earthdogs get lost there. Or stuck.
I had a working dachshund myself and saw all this happen on several occasions.
