fortified (foot) settlement Explanation: Priešpilis (outer ward, outer bailey, also fore work) is a courtyard or the space between the inner curtain wall and the outer curtain wall of a castle. Papilys is a settlement outside the castle (or a hillfort), fortified by a defensive wall, moat, or a rampart. Thus, 'priešpilis' is IN the castle and 'papilys' is OUTSIDE the castle. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2013-10-25 22:55:40 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Raymond Sidrys, "A Lithuanian-English glossary of Baltic archaeology", in Archaeologia Baltica, p. 174-199 |
