All the flatteries went to one's head and s/he did silly things... ですから馬鹿なことをやってしまったのなら did silly things such as... と続けてはいかがですか。 Reference: http://www.babylon.com/.../went_to_his_head/Japanese |

all the flattery gave him/her a big head Explanation: 確かにYumicoさんがおっしゃった様に、褒められて、持ち上げられて、調子に乗ってしまうというのを英語で表現すると’goes to the head'がぴったり一致するのですが、本当に"馬鹿なことをやってしまった”かどうかは、この文書からですと、少し断言できないような気がして、そこまで言ってしまうと話の流れを乱れてしまうのではないかと少し心配しています。 従って、上記の英訳を候補として挙げました。その文だけで十分原稿の意味が伝わると思います。 |

he got carried away by all this flattery/soft-soap Explanation: a compilation of other replies with a more idiomatic equivalent of 調子に乗る you may try using a more direct paraphrase of the original Japanese proverb: 'a flattered / soft-soaped pig will climb a tree' |

get apple-polished (or soft-soaped) and carried away Explanation: 「お世辞を言われて(おべっかを使われて・おべんちゃらを言われて・愛想良くふるまわれて)調子に乗る(悪乗りする)」 -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day10 hrs (2009-07-14 15:31:18 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Comment on "ブタもおだてりゃ木に登る": I think this author is trying to make a sarcastic remark to those who get carried away, using this rhetoric. What it means is something like, as the proverbs say, “Every extremity is a vice.”; “Much meat, much malady.”; “Too many cooks spoil the broth.”; “The higher the monkey climbs the more he shows his tail.”; “A little wind kindles, much puts out the fire.”, etc. |

he was egged/goaded on (by flattery) to make a fool of himself Explanation: "egged on" and "goaded on" means to make someone do something that they're hesitant or embarrassed to do. Usually the means is teasing, coaxing, or daring, but by adding the phrase "by flattery" the nuance can be made clear. |
