Japanese term or phrase: それで私に払わせようとしたのか?
Dear ProZ members,

I have a doubt about the following sentence, said by a character in a cartoon answering to a girl who lied to get him to pay a taxi in her place and just explained her reasons to him.

それで私に払わせようとしたのか?

Basically I'd translate it with "And so so you tried to make me pay for it?", but I was wondering if "You tried to make me pay for it in that way?/Is that how you tried to make me pay for it?" could be a viable option too, interpreting それで in another way.

Thank you for your opinions!

English translation:So that's why you made me pay for it?
Explanation:
それで here corresponds directly to the explanation she has just given. So he's basically just confirming what she said. The emphasis is on confirmation, rather than interrogating the reason.

Generally, それで is related to reasons. It can also mean something like 'in that way' as you said, however in this context it's more about why than how. It:s meant to express that you have understood the reason but have some kind of emotion connected to it. For example here he's probably angry/annoyed. It's a subtle expression.

agree  Zoe Womack: I agree with Tsuda Translating. But I was also wondering if the character actually did pay? Because otherwise it would be more like "So that's why you tried to make me pay for it?!" based on the grammar 払わせようとした
