actual, general and special damages

Explanation:
"Actual damages" compensate for losses sustained as a direct result of an injury and "general damages" indicates damages to compensate for losses that are an immediate, foreseeable and logical result. The two categories might be lumped together as "direct damages". "Special (or consequential) damages" offset losses sustained not as a result of injury but related to the circumstances of the injured party (eg, damages relating to a business).
