French term or phrase: take a stand
Context:

They doubt their abilities and are excessively afraid to take a stand

My translation: Dudan de sus capacidades y tienen un miedo excesivo a pronunciarse

Note: This phrase has been questioned by a reviewer of my book who stated as follows:

One phrase I found confusing was on Page 30, third paragraph, "Dudan de sus capacidades y tienen un miedo excesivo a pronunciarse." It is an odd way of saying that they have an excessive fear of being found lacking. It translates to “They doubt their abilities and have an excessive fear of pronouncing themselves." Odd but understandable.

Please, can you discuss your reasons against the reviewer's argument that the translation is odd?

Much appreciated!

To take a stand es ciertamente distinto. Tal vez yo habría escrito “a decir lo que piensan”.
Y no me parece normal que el revisor traduzca tu traducción de esa forma.
