English translation: defining the "printing job"

English language (monolingual) [PRO]

English term or phrase: jobbing
I would like some help regarding the meaning of the word ''jobbing'' in this context (a user guide):

''Prism Win is a Management Information System (MIS) created specially for the graphic arts and printing industries. It is a whole package that allows companies to perform estimating, jobbing, job costing and tracking, accounting, scheduling, inventory purchasing, and sales ordering and management.''
or

''The Prism WIN MIS encompasses a full accounting suite, estimating and jobbing, job costing and tracking, inventory and purchasing, scheduling, sales management and sales ordering.'' ( http://tinyurl.com/jz6qex8 )

What exactly happens at the ''jobbing stage''?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Selected answer:defining the "printing job"
Explanation:
this software Prism WIN MIS is meant for printers to keep track of what they are doing; if you look at the whole list

estimating,
jobbing,
job costing and tracking,
accounting,
scheduling,
inventory purchasing, and
sales ordering and management

"jobbing" comes before "job costing and tracking" and after "estimating" so it ought to be:

defining the "printing job" (format, type of paper, number of pages, number of copies etc ...) IOW dividing the work to be done for one client in one or more "jobs", and specifying each "job".

if you look at any software used to control printers attached to a PC, printing is done by "jobs" with more or less the same options that would also apply to printing done by a printing shop.

agree  Tony M: Yes, breaking down into jobs (= tasks), or the reverse, grouping together... for things that might be done by different departments, on different sites, outsourced, etc.

work sourcing

Explanation:
In my Project Management System, the usual stages would be planning, task delegation, costing of tasks, sourcing people to do those tasks. With the description of the program, I think it is something similar to my system. And also considering the definition of jobbing (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/jobbing), I think jobbing is sourcing people to do the job.

scheduling

Explanation:
In this specific context, "jobbing" refers to the scheduling of tasks relating to the making of an individual product (a book, magazine, newspaper, etc.) in a way that optimises the use of the print company's resources (typesetters, print machines, folders, trimmers, binders, etc.).

neutral  Daryo: could make sense, but don't you need first to define each "printing job" before you try to find a slot for them?
