Explanation:
When you send your CV to apply for a position, you should also include a short letter. This letter is called a covering letter or (in American English) a cover letter. A covering letter sent with a CV/resume is also called a letter of application. Your letter of application is a sales letter. The product it is selling is your CV.

A cover letter or covering letter or motivation letter or motivational letter is a letter of introduction attached to, or accompanying another document such as a résumé or curriculum vitae.
Cover letters are generally one page at most in length, divided into a header, introduction, body, and closing.

I believe the British use cover letter more often. I believe it holds true for the US, as well!

Apologies: It appears that I have erred. Covering letter appears to be more British. Must be because we are so geographically close to the US!! (smile!)
