English term or phrase: interior
This is from a book on a French field hospital during the WWI :

"He heard from the hospital in the interior—for they were taking most of the wounded to the interior, at that time, for fear of upsetting Paris by the sight of them in the streets—that artificial legs were costly."

What if the meaning of the "interior" in this context?

Thank you.

Inland/interior of the country

Explanation:
I would say, given the context, that they were taking the wounded to a hospital located in the interior of France, well away from the city, to not upset the Parisians seeing the wounded or amputees.

-> I considered that but decided against it as it's not necessarily rural. It could be in a town or village

agree  Tony M: Yes, here in France we'd more likely say 'in the provinces' to distinguish it from the capital. 'Interior' sounds like quite an antiquated usage, and I suppose it also means 'away from the border and the front lines'
