DNA、RNAといった核酸の一部を大量に増幅する技術。もっとも一般的に普及している核酸増幅法としてはPCR法、LAMP法などがある。DNAの98%は遺伝子情報を持たない冗長な領域であると考えられている。そのため、DNAから特定の遺伝子だけを取り出す（検出する）場合は、核酸増幅法を用いて、DNAの中からターゲットとなる遺伝子だけを迅速に大量に増幅する。そして、もとのDNAの分子量と増幅した遺伝子の分子量の差（もちろんその差はDNA>>>増幅した遺伝子）を利用し、電気泳動法によって、もとのDNAと増幅した遺伝子を分離し、増幅した遺伝子だけを取り出す（検出する）ことができる。
