Bridge traffic signals Explanation: Typo for "Onderdoorvaartlichten" The Dutch link below suggests that the Onderdoorvaartlichten are signals attached to the bridge used to control the flow of marine traffic under the bridge e.g. which span to use, whether traffic is permitted one-way only or both ways etc. In analogy with the international port traffic signals governing traffic in busy harbours and ports (the second link below), I would suggest something like "bridge traffic signals" would be clear. onderdoorvaarlichten; onderdoorvaartlichten navigation lights (under the bridge) Explanation: See e.g.: https://www.google.co.uk/search?espv=210&es_sm=93&q="navigat... (Google search for: "navigation lights under the bridge") -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2014-02-26 10:48:39 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- 'And watch the navigation lights under the bridge's stone arches.' (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=TVNuvGbDfAIC&pg=PA103&lpg... ) 'Failure to fix navigation lights under the bridge to Hilton Head Island could cost the state up to $1,100 a day in fines, depending on the outcome of a Coast Guard inspection next week.' (http://www.lowcountrynewspapers.net/archive/node/70077 ) 'Navigation lights under the bridge - which some say weren't working the night of the accident - will be solar-powered.' (http://madmax.lmtonline.com/textarchives/111901/s9.htm ) 'No permanent lights though. There are some navigation lights under the bridge but they really dont attract any fish.' (http://www.corpusfishing.com/messageboard/phpBB2/viewtopic.p... ) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 hrs (2014-02-26 22:15:20 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- ••• Although there is such a thing as navigation lights under a bridge, I think that what is meant here is the bridge/marine traffic signals indicating that a vessel must stop (red), go (green), or contact the person in charge of the bridge (white or yellow).
