Ships, Sailing, Maritime / part of traditional Catalan 'llaut'
Catalan term or phrase: paramola
Term to describe a part of a traditional Catalan boat, a 'llaut'.

In my text this is called a 'primola' but I think it's incorrect as I can't find mention of it anywhere.

I found a couple of definitions for it in Catalan but can't figure out what the English term is;

It appears to be some kind of wooden plate that the mast emerges from.

the dictionary definition is clear...
Properly speaking, partners, sometimes called carlings, are deck reinforcements.
Here is a photo and article with the best of both worlds.

Asker: Thansk Peter, do you think it might also be a 'mast partner'? It looks like a rectangular structure, like a horizontal plate, in my illustration. mast partner: wood planking or steel plating around a mast hole in a deck to give support to a mast

Asker: Great, thanks. I presume the step is the bottom part then.

Asker: Thanks so much for your help, Peter! I ended up awarding the points to Sheila though, as she was first to mention 'carling', which was the term I eventually chose.
