The ones I know have full-time on-the-road salespeople who visit end clients and develop a relationship with them.

The end clients I have that ask for translations directly don't know and have never heard of websites such as Proz.com. They generally have found me by networking with another translator, often one of their employees.

Once on the site, some search the directory for a suitable supplier, while others post a job, publicly or privately.

My agency clients are almost all small, specialised agencies. I have no idea how they come by their clients.
