Il a eu le premier l’idée de séparer le principe colorant de sa charge sableuse en mélangeant eau et minerai par ***brassage***. Le sable plus lourd se déposait en premier, l’ocre plus légère surnageait et se déposait plus loin

I think it has to do with stirring, in a way that favours precipitation of particles.

I think this has to do with separation by centrifugation. In this light, I think stirring is more appropriate.
