Can someone please explain to me, in layperson's terms, what exactly localisation is?
I think it's the translation of websites, like xml and html and all that stuff, but I'm not sure.

you could start from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalization_and_localization where the subject is explained in very clear terms, then you could explore the several resources listed at the bottom of the Wikipedia article and browse this very forum, where the topic has been discussed a few times.
