Summary:This session introduces participants to the key range of ethical concerns that arise in the context of translation. Attendees will engage with codes of ethics and more, as well as reflecting on their own practice via the use of a range of thought-provoking scenarios.
Description
What does it mean to be an ethical translator? What are the key principles that we are expected to live by? How is this area developing in light of major global developments? This session explores these questions and more and provides a space to reflect on your own practice as an ethical professional in the 21st century.

Ethical issues have long been a key concern for professionals, academics, and translator trainers alike and the challenging contemporary context that we live in has brought these issues into shaper focus than ever before.

This session is the first of two webinars by Dr Joseph Lambert on the topics of ethics and sustainability for translators. This session contextualises ethics in the world of translation, covering basic ethical building blocks, conceptions of ethics from key translation studies academics, and the strengths and weaknesses of the translation industry's almost ubiquitous codes of ethics.

The concepts covered are further contextualised using a range of engaging case studies, and the session will conclude with an open discussion of several thought-provoking scenarios, allowing participants to reflect on the principles covered, as well as their own internalised moral codes.
Target audience
This course will be of use to translators at any stage of their careers. The dynamic, personal nature of ethical questions means that there is no 'one size fits all' solution and it is important to reflect on our stance at regular intervals.
Learning objectives
Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the range of potential ethical questions that arise in our work as translators and the ability to reflect on ethical challenges in an informed, nuanced manner.
