housework? Jan 17, 2007

How about the other busy multitasking parents who do laundry, cook, and any number of other household tasks when taking a break? The benefits of working from home (I guess!!).

Surf the web Jan 17, 2007

I see that surfing the web scores highest. I voted it as well. Though that's a terrible habit. I should really take proper breaks.

Flirt! Jan 17, 2007

I have an ongoing flirtation with a friend in Melbourne through Skype's chat facility. It brightens up my day and takes my mind off translation problems (and he's an IT guru so he can sometimes help me!). But maybe I should go for walks around the park and try to meet someone closer to home instead.

While at desk Jan 17, 2007

Hi Mary,

I deliberately specified "while at desk". I must admit, I often go and load/unload the washing machine/tumbler/dishwasher in short breaks just to stretch my legs.

I voted: other... Jan 17, 2007

I am a semi - professional bicyclist. My diary training is about 2-3 hours and I do not have mini-breaks, I have more free time due to accumulation job I usually do in order to have a specific schedule job. Sometimes when I have breaks, I take a rest in bed.

I chose for "other" Jan 17, 2007

I normally play with my child, either at home or take her to a park or store. Then I can also go out and get some air.

Proz.com or a few other sites Jan 17, 2007

Apart from skimming the KudoZ questions and forums at ProZ.com I have a few other regulars.

I've started subscribing to New Scientist, so when I've been to Proz.com a couple of times I can surf around there. There are enormous quantities of reading matter in the back numbers as well as current news... There's a free Sudoku too and some articles are available to non-subscribers.

The Danish newspaper 'Jyllands Posten' is good for me, but not for anyone who can't read Danish... Again, the subscriber pages are an advantage. But lots of newspapers run equivalent services.

The CIoL and ITI sites get a visit now and then.

Occasionally I surf round a client's site - that may be useful or may be a waste of time...

I try to limit these breaks to max. 10 minutes. The New Scientist Sudoku saves itself for later if you haven't finished when you leave the site so that is no excuse!

Then it's back to work!
Happy translating!

Except for the fact that I don't play with your cat but with my beagle Fausto.

(In general, I prefer to stand up during the breaks, so I do all that, read, for example, anywhere but in my office).

Reading the news? Jan 18, 2007

How about reading the news online? I sometimes think that "surfing the web" is more like jumping around on the web with no specific usual destination. I mostly read the news in two or three different online news services.

Stretch Jan 18, 2007

I voted stretch because I come from a family of backache sufferers and this has got to be one of the worst jobs for aggravating the condition. I think I even do it subconsciously now so it's not too bad.

Aside from that, it's washing the dishes from the day before!...terrible I know, walking my rough Collie Echo, surfing the net, looking through the forums, catching up on emails, playing games sometimes and keeping up with favourite series like Desperate Housewives, Smallville, the

I've really got to dust off my gym membership cos there's a severe lack of exercise in my routine!

didn't see "while at your desk" Jan 18, 2007

I guess I was reading too fast - I selected other but actually, when at my desk, I usually check out proz.com and check my emails. Now, if we were talking about mini breaks away from the desk (which is what I thought).....it's a whole different ballgame!
