I would first share my indignation with trusted colleagues and eventually submit a ticket to the Support team and the moderator.

I would have exactly the same reaction had the target of the "misconduct" been a colleague. I can't stand offensive language, just like I can't stand people raising their voice to me.

Thank you, Teresa!

Get myself banned Aug 5

I normally respond in kind and get banned.

I’m not going to turn the other cheek or run to teacher.

I’m a pussycat in real life though.

All of the above Aug 5

I admit that I had never thought about it, but a recent incident forced me to think about it and so I proposed this Quick Poll. In my case, I used all of the above.

Some gits go crying to their mum/mods for protection. Pathetic yes, but quite amusing sometimes. Rarely conducive to a wanna-be professional environment though.

(I expect this post to never appear.)

Just ignore them. Life is too short to get wound up on things like that. And unless they have been egregiously offense to an entire group of people, let the poor Staff focus on other things.

It depends on who it is and the context. I don't mind a bit of negging... until it becomes systematic, or seems to.

All of the above, depending... Aug 6

I might not discover the insult at all! But then I consider cultural differences. I live in a society that is known for being what is called abrupt in some parts of England. The language doesn´t even have a word for please! We don´t spend a lot of time hoping you are well before we come to the point in a mail.

In real life I can be undiplomatic myself. Online, I have to check for typos and think about what I am writing, so I pretend to be a nice person. ...

In real life I can be undiplomatic myself. Online, I have to check for typos and think about what I am writing, so I pretend to be a nice person. I have offended people on on Proz.com, so when the post is removed, I send a short, private apology.

When it comes to offensive language, I know that many non-English speakers use English four-letter words because they sound less offensive to non-English ears. I learned to live with d..n in the last century, and it is not so often used now. The f-word still jars, and it IS still offensive in English. There are false friends between the Scandinavian languages... I try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

If the insult was clearly deliberate, I would probably contact a moderator. I served briefly as a moderator myself, and one discussion in a forum got heated, so I removed a series of posts between two contributors as impolite and off topic. I wrote to both of them and said they would not want their comments hanging in cyberspace for ever, among their other witty and useful contributions, and both of them actually wrote back and thanked me!

That is what I like about this site as oposed to many others: you can disagree or criticise people for good reasons, but it is possible to have offensive posts removed, and most of us keep a pleasant tone.

I’m not going to delve into details, but the person in question was really offensive not only to me, but also to the moderator and to others in between. Her actions resulted in an eight-day suspension.

this happened in the EN>ES forum a couple of years ago.... Aug 6

And the person involved repeatedly insulted, attacked, humiliated and disqualified several Proz/forum members for some months. He was also "active" in other language pairs. I believe this was really a weird/exceptional case, but unfortunately and despite several messages, the "poor staff" was not reactive at all. This is not justifiable at all in a professional site like this.

Ignore it (at least the insulting parts) Aug 6

For all of its amazing benefits, the internet is a cesspool gathering the worst of human inclinations. Why would we on Proz be spared?

Just let it go.

I am surprised that "Ignore" was not one of the options offered. Not every action calls for a reaction.

Report that member to the staff and... Aug 6

Thank you for bringing this poll.
I read the recent insults, which were quite serious.
I would send a support ticket to the staff, report the event and ask for that member to be banned. It's the best solution in my opinion, when the violation is extremely serious.
It's not enough to delete insults directed at other members and everything will be fine!

I myself have received insults here, on these forums, when I tried to help a member with a question about a translation tool. On another occasion, I received a rather insulting private message because I have explained something about the Kudoz rules and the member interpreted everything the other way round.
It's for these reasons that I've stayed away from Kudoz which became a "jungle". I miss the good old days!
I haven't been very regular here either.
Unfortunately, being offensive and using violence don't just happen in the virtual world. It also happens in the real world, and much more in recent years, I believe.
Humans are cruel.

I am too busy to teach etiquette to people who should know better Aug 6

Only one person has really been rude to me on here. If they have not learned to interact with people differently by now....

I will ignore the person. I might reply just once to explain my point of view ignoring the insulting part. But in most cases, I ignore the person.

This happened to me only one time on Proz. I explained my point of view ignoring the rude way of that person. Then, she apologized to me.

Some people talk before thinking and ignoring them is the best way.

Naming and shaming Aug 6

Not that I care much about f-words in a private message, but posting the screenshot in the forum thread was satisfying.
