I don’t. I never turn off my computer before 11 p.m. and almost all my customers are in Europe. Generally I start around 8 a.m. (today earlier – though it’s a holiday in Portugal - because I’m in the middle of a long project to be delivered next week) and I’ll stop when the work is done, but the days when I could and would work very late at night are long gone…

I have to go online and set auto reply from the provider's website, so I only do it when I am really 'out of office' in normal working hours.

Besides, I do not want to reveal my details by answering to everyone who sends me mails!
And some 'no-reply' websites time out occasionally and fill my mailbox with spam.

No, clients don't generally contact me after 6 p.m. and if they do, they don't expect an immediate reply and are usually offering a project if they do contact me, so I just accept or decline the project when I see the email.

I only use auto reply when I know I'll be away for a couple of days, at least.
I find it a bit unpleasant to receive notifications from people who use this feature, right after I send an important e-mail, above all when the person has received and replied the email an hour earlier. I don't consider this a good professional practice and I would suggest no one uses it.

Like other colleagues responding to this post, I only use the feature when I'm not available, for example if I'm going to be out of the office all day, or on the rare occasions when I'm on holiday taking a break.

Early in my career, I once turned on auto reply with an automatic out-of-office response. During the evening an agency PM sent me an email. However, the PM's own auto reply was also activated and the next morning I was faced with thousands of auto reply messages from the two machines responding to each other, and one very unhappy PM. Never again.

I don't do it either.

Depending on the agency, I know when I can expect an email from them: some agencies work until 6 or 7 p.m., others work 24/7 and, if there isn't anybody physically there, a machine sends automatic messages/emails concerning new projects, so it wouldn't make any sense for me to turn on the auto-reply.

If I am not available (or I am sleeping - depending on the time zone of the LSP), I simply reply as soon as I am back.

I also receive emails via a mobile app; if there's anything urgent, and I am able to read and reply to that email, I can of course send a short reply right away, otherwise they'll need to wait.

Modern touchscreen phones and smartphones amaze their owners with a huge number of very different functions. Users may not even be aware of the existence of many of them. One of these functions is an automated text response to an incoming call. Almost all flagship models of well-known brands have this function. Do you use this?

About auto reply Oct 13, 2021

I have several contacts from whom I got auto-reply to my emails. The auto message reads in the line of "This is to confirm that your email has been received." However, how can I be sure that my email has actually been read by the recipient?

This auto-reply message is something meaningless, at least in my case.
