Trust your instinct. If you look up the address on Street View you'll see it's a street of fairly modest private homes.

I have been contacted by this person too and I am also suspicious. I'll answer but ask for payment in advance. Pascale

Pascale I have heard about a scam where the client accepts to pay in advance, but then he pays you more than you have asked and says that is has been a mistake. I have known about it at Proz.

Sara and Pascale, looking at your languages, which are not the same, it is unclear why he would have contacted both of you anyway.

I didn't pay attention to it, but in fact it is strange why someone wants such a big document translated to those 2 languages. Thanks

"Does anyone know a client called Westley Gibson?" could be the title of a thriller or, should I say, a whodunnit !

I have just been contacted too - he offers to pay 50% in advance and 50% at delivery - that sounds already too strange for a translation!! And he has written no address at all in his mail. =S let that be, I have more serious jobs to do!! Marisa

He removed his address on August 2nd? Maybe because I wrote this the day before: "I can see there is no Westley Gibson at this address. Please explain. I can see you're not the author of the text. Do you belong to an organisation? For whom is the translation?" No answer. Now I'm sure it's better to ignore this demand. I'm thankful to all contributors of this topic and to t... Mr. Gibson contacted me on 15 July about a potential job. I asked him if he was a private individual or employed by a company and told him that I needed to receive the document to make a quote and work out a deadline. A couple of days later he sent me a Word file without giving more details about himself/his organisation. I had a bad feeling about it and I therefore quoted the translation twice my normal rate and asked for a down payment of 50%. Surprisingly he accepted... See more Mr. Surprisingly he accepted my conditions and said he was going to send me a cheque. In the meantime I went on holiday… Back from holiday today, I found a letter from Benin in my letterbox. The envelope contains no sender, no accompanying letter… just a “cheque” (or to be precise a strange piece of paper) for an amount almost 3 times the actual price of the translation… I sent this guy an e-mail to ask if the cheque from Benin was from him and here is what he answered: "Dear Nicolas, I am very grateful to have your confirmation and update on the check's arrival and that it's finally in your possession. The check was sent due to our anticipation to get you paid for the document (Conflict Management in an Organization) given to you to be translated from English into French and the remaining part of the document which is still under review with the supervisor would be be introduced to you shortly, so please don't mind that. Actually the check was sent to you by one of our client (American Investor) that lives in Republic Du Benin, the issuer of the check who happens to be the sponsor of the Annual Seminar Lecture in which the translated document would be needed for, we instructed him to mail you the check on the amount ($ 6500.25) he promised to assist with, so we could at least get you a means to have your translation charges paid for as promised. Meanwhile, the remaining fund after you must have deducted the translation charges of 2,005.32 € + the bank charges over the payment of the check would be needed for the good organising of the seminar. Furthermore, I would like you to take the check to your bank and get it deposited on your account tomorrow morning in which will be credited on your account within 3-4 days and get me informed immediately the amount on the check reflects on your account, then you can start up with the translation of the document. I will be waiting for the feedback from you as soon as you are back from the bank. Thanks for the co-operation and understanding, Westley Gibson" It is obviously a scam!! ▲ Collapse
