Psychoanalytic 'essentialism' is paradoxical in so far as it is precisely psychoanalysis — at least in its Lacanian reading — which presents the real break with essentialist logic. That is to say, Lacanian psychoanalysis
goes a decisive step further than the usual 'post-Marxist' anti-essentialism affirming the irreducible plurality of particular struggles — in other words, demonstrating how their articulation into a series of equivalences depends always on the radical contingency of the social-historical process: it enables us to grasp this plurality itself as a multitude of responses to the same impossible-real kernel.
Let us take the Freudian notion of the 'death drive'. Of course, we have to abstract Freud's biologism: 'death drive' is not a biological fact but a notion indicating that the human psychic apparatus is subordinated to a blind automatism of repetition beyond pleasure-seeking, self-preservation, accordance between man and his milieu. Man is — Hegel dixit — 'an animal sick unto death', an animal extorted by an insatiable parasite (reason, logos, language). In this perspective, the 'death drive', this dimension of radical negativity, cannot be reduced to an expression of alienated social conditions, it defines la condition humaine as such: there is no solution, no escape from it; the thing to do is not to 'overcome', to 'abolish' it, but to come to terms with it, to learn to recognize it in its terrifying dimension and then, on the basis of this fundamental recognition, to try to articulate a modus vivendi with it.

Психоаналитический «эссенционализм» (в случае аутентичного психоанализа и особенно в лакановской версии) – как ни странно это выглядит на первый взгляд – совершенно порывает с «логикой сущности». Можно сказать, что психоанализ Лакана идет значительно дальше, чем традиционная постмарксистская контроверза эссенционализму, провозглашающая принципиальную множественность локальных противостояний. Другими словами, лакановский психоанализ показывает, как данные противостояния, в зависимости от конкретной суммы социально-исторических факторов, складываются в серии эквиваленций, что и позволяет нам упорядочить эту множественность как множество реакций на принципиальную недостижимость Реального.
Обратимся к фрейдовскому понятию «влечение к смерти». Безусловно, мы должны учитывать, что Фрейд придавал ему не только биологическое значение: «влечение к смерти» это не столько биологический факт, сколько указание на то, что психический аппарат человека подчинен слепому автоматизму колебаний между стремлением к удовольствию и самосохранением, взаимодействию между человеком и средой. Человек есть – Гегель dixit – «животное, болеющее до самой смерти», животное, изнуряемое ненасытными паразитами (разум, логос, язык). В этом смысле «влечение к смерти», это предельно негативное измерение, никак не касается тех или иных социальных условий, оно определяет la condition humaine [сами условия человеческого бытия] как таковые: это влечение неизбежно и непреодолимо; и задача состоит не в том, чтобы «превозмочь» или «отменить» его, но в том, чтобы уяснить его, чтобы научиться распознавать его ужасные проявления и после, на основе этого основополагающего распознавания, попытаться как-то определить свой modus vivendi в такой ситуации.
