Source text - English MILITARY HALL
The military connection to the House can be seen in the Army yellow paint that still covers the outside of the Davis-Horton House today. The first residents were West Point-educated Army officers. Between the flags are pictures of John Bankhead Magruder on the left, and Nathaniel Lyon on the right. Above the coat rack are historical photos of the first California barracks and the bay as it looked in the 1870s. The uniforms are replicas of the ones worn by the soldiers in the photos.
At the end of the hall, you will see a copy of the original 1849 map drawn by Andrew Gray, the surveyor from the US Border commission who suggested where to build New Town to Mr. Davis.
The tin ceilings in the hallway were saved from the dumpster and installed here in 2007 when San Diego Hardware closed after 120 years of operation in the Gaslamp Quarter. The light fixture near the front door is a rare whale oil lamp. The rear hallway fixture is from the 1880s.
PARLOR
As you enter the back door of the Parlor, you will see the photographs of William Heath Davis, his wife, Maria Estudillo, and Lillian, one of their 12 children.
The parlor represents the period when Alonzo Erastus Horton and his third wife, Sarah Babe, lived here while their new home was under construction. The room is arranged to be an example of the later Victorian period, 1870 to 1901. Photographs of the Hortons can be found on the front wall of the parlor near the game table. The portrait over the sofa, typical of the period, is of a lady from Coronado, across the bay.
KITCHEN
The kitchen contains artifacts showing how families lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There is a wood/coal burning stove, as well as a more modern gas stove. Both were used in the House until 1981. Also in the kitchen are a slow cooker, a pie safe, and a California cooler, the large wooden cabinet which kept food fresh by allowing air from a crawl space to circulate through open slat shelves within. There are many utensils and common items such as ice tongs, butter churn and washing dolly. In the sewing room you will see one of the first commercial sewing machines.
DINING ROOM
The dining room is set for a family meal in 1885. On the table are examples of pressed glass goblets and common items of the time, such as a spooner and knife rest. A wicker highchair more than 100 years old is also placed at the table. On the wall is an original gas fixture that provided light for this room. Electricity was not introduced to this house until 1984!
CHILDREN’S ROOM
At the top of the stairs to the right is the Children’s Room. There are a variety of toys to show children today what they might have played with years ago, including antique marbles and wooden checkers. There is also a chamber pot (a portable “potty”), a trundle and a quilt made by a young girl.
ALONZO HORTON’S BEDROOM
This house is the only surviving Horton residence. This room was used by Horton and Sarah Babe when they resided here, evidenced by the marble fireplace, their only upgrade. Such luxurious stone was expensive, and Horton was the only resident of this house who could have afforded it. A few of Horton’s belongings are in the room, including the vases atop the mantle and the beautiful pitcher and basin set atop the vanity. Lydia Knapp Horton’s artistic talents are displayed in her wall paintings. She was Alonzo’s fourth and last wife. Inspiration for the wallpaper came from the original ceiling paper. Notice the square patterns in the corners; these are replicas of the original Bradshaw and Bradshaw design.
HOSPITAL ROOM
The hospital room represents the period when Anna Scheper ran the house as the County Hospital. The room depicts a pre-1900 hospital room, with a hospital gown, an 1850 medicine chest, and bible. The ornate iron-frame bed is original to the house, as is the surgical kit on the nightstand. The medicine bottles were found in a fairly recent archaeological dig of the surrounding neighborhood. Scheper cared for up to 19 patients at one time in the house earning $1.00 per day, per patient.
UPSTAIRS HALLWAY
The most prominent feature of the house is the original staircase and hardwood floors. Notice how wide the planks are, especially on the upstairs landing. Notice the hand-hewn, square-headed nails embedded in the planks.
Along the wall are memorabilia of Alonzo Horton along with photos from both his earlier and later years, and his marriage certificate to Lydia Horton, his fourth wife, whom he married at age 77. They were married for over twenty years until he died in his nineties. There is also a certificate for stock he purchased to encourage the railroad to come to San Diego. Most significantly is his personal cloth map of the layout of Downtown San Diego which is much like we see it today. And last, the original deed for the piece of land called the Horton Addition which linked the Gaslamp Quarter with William Heath Davis’ New Town.
VICTORIAN BATHROOM
This bathroom is decorated in the Victorian style. In the 1860s, awareness of hygiene increased when Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, died of typhus. As a result, glazed tiles on the floors and walls became a must, the baths and sinks were enameled, and pipes were exposed for easy cleaning. Several fixtures, including the tub, are original as running water was brought upstairs in the 1890s. The beautiful blue marble sink from England dates to 1892. The pull toilet is a replica of the original that was on the back porch until the House became a museum! While perhaps tempting, please only use our guest restroom downstairs
LOHMANN – DEYO STUDY
This study has been re-created to look as it did when George Deyo lived here with artifacts belonging
to the Lohmann and Deyo families. George kept this room locked, claiming it to be a place of reverence, with urns containing the Lohmann’s ashes. When George passed away and the room was unsealed, $5000 in gold
and a working whiskey still were discovered in the alcove behind the “cutaway” wall. George’s pharmaceutical scale, upon which he measured his gold, can be found on his desk. A replica still and George’s thermometer and measuring cups can be found behind the curtain in what was once a secret room, accessed by a secret door in the bathroom.

Il retaggio militare della casa si può ancora notare nella pittura giallo-esercito che tutt’oggi riveste gli esterni della Davis-Horton House. IL SALOTTO

Il salotto è tipico del periodo in cui Alonzo Erastus Horton viveva qui con la terza moglie, Sarah Babe, durante la costruzione della loro nuova casa. LA CUCINA

Nella cucina ci sono inoltre un dispositivo per cottura lenta, una credenza per dolci e un refrigeratore della California: l’ampio ripostiglio di legno che manteneva il cibo in fresco grazie alla circolazione, attraverso le fessure delle mensole, di aria proveniente dalle fondamenta. Ci sono diversi utensili e oggetti comuni, quali pinze per il ghiaccio, una zangola e un bastone per rimestare il bucato. Nella stanza del cucito si può osservare una delle prime macchine da cucire industriali.
LA SALA DA PRANZO
La sala da pranzo è apparecchiata per un pranzo di famiglia del 1885. Sulla tavola ci sono esempi di calici in vetro pressato e oggetti comuni del tempo, quali un porta cucchiai e un posa coltello. Accostato al tavolo c’è anche un seggiolone in vimini vecchio più di cent’anni. Sulla parete c’è l’autentica lampada a gas che provvedeva l’illuminazione a questa stanza. La casa fu allacciata alla corrente elettrica solo nel 1984.
LA STANZA BAMBINI
In cima alle scale, sulla destra, c’è la stanza dei bambini. Ci sono diversi giocattoli per mostrare ai bambini d’oggi con cosa avrebbero giocato anni fa, comprese biglie d’epoca e pedine di legno. C’è anche un vaso da notte, un letto estraibile e una trapunta fatta da una ragazzina.
LA CAMERA DA LETTO DI ALONZO HORTON
Questa è l’unica delle dimore dell’Horton che sia rimasta. La camera era usata dall’Horton e da Sarah Babe quando vivevano qui, come testimonia il caminetto di marmo, l’unico miglioramento da essi apportato. Una tale pietra pregiata era costosa, e l’Horton fu il solo tra i residenti della casa che poteva permettersela. Nella stanza vi sono alcuni oggetti appartenuti all’Horton, come i vasi sulla mensola del caminetto e la bella caraffa con lavabo disposti sulla toletta. L’inclinazione artistica di Lydia Knapp Horton è in mostra nei quadri alle pareti. Fu la quarta e ultima moglie di Alonzo. La tappezzeria fu ispirata da quella originale del soffitto. Si notino i motivi quadrati negli angoli; si tratta di riproduzioni di quelli originali di Bradshaw and Bradshaw.
LA STANZA D’OSPEDALE
La stanza d’ospedale ricorda il periodo in cui Anna Scheper gestiva la casa quale Ospedale di Contea. La stanza si presenta come un camera d’ospedale di prima del 1900, con un camice d’ospedale, un armadietto dei medicinali del 1850 e una bibbia. Il letto ornato e gli strumenti chirurgici sul comodino sono quelli originali della casa. Le bottiglie dei medicinali sono state ritrovate in recente scavo archeologico del quartiere circostante. La Sheper si prendeva curava di un massimo di 19 pazienti per volta, guadagnando $ 1.00 al giorno per paziente.
IL CORRIDOIO AL PIANO DI SOPRA
Le caratteristiche più rilevanti della casa sono le scale e i pavimenti in legno. Si noti la larghezza delle assi, particolarmente sul pianerottolo superiore. Osservate i chiodi in legno rifilati a mano incassati nelle assi.
Lungo le pareti ci sono cimeli di Alonzo Horton con fotografie della sua gioventù e della vecchiaia, nonché il certificato di matrimonio con Lydia Horto, la quarta moglie, che sposò all’età di 77 anni. Furono sposati per più di vent’anni, fino a che lui morì ultranovantenne. C’è anche un certificato di azioni che acquistò per favorire l’arrivo della ferrovia a San Diego. Estremamente significativa è la mappa personale in tessuto del piano urbanistico del centro di San Diego, che è molto simile a quello d’oggi. E infine, l’atto originale di acquisto dell’appezzamento di terreno denominato l'Ampliamento Horton, che collegava il Gas Lamp Quarter con la Città Nuova di William Heath Davis.
IL BAGNO VITTORIANO
Il bagno è decorato in stile vittoriano. Attorno al 1860, l’attenzione per l'igiene personale crebbe in seguito alla morte per tifo del Principe Alberto, il marito della Regina Vittoria. Come conseguenza, piastrelle smaltate sui pavimenti e le pareti divennero d’obbligo, vasche e lavandini vennero smaltati e le tubature divennero a vista per facilitarne la pulizia. Vari sanitari, vasca compresa, sono quelli originali, dato che il piano superiore fu provvisto d’acqua corrente attorno al 1890. Il bel lavandino di marmo blu proveniente dall’Inghilterra è del 1892. Il gabinetto con sciacquone è una copia di quello originale che era installato nella veranda posteriore fino a quando la casa divenne un museo. Per quanto possiate esserne tentati, per favore, usate solo il bagno per gli ospiti dabbasso.
LO STUDIO LOHMANN – DEYO
Lo studio è stato ricostruito con manufatti appartenuti alle famiglie Lohman e Deyo, in modo da presentarsi come quando George Deyo viveva qui. George teneva questa stanza chiusa a chiave, sostenendo che fosse un luogo di venerazione per la presenza di un re con le ceneri dei Lohmann. Quando George morì e la stanza fu aperta, in una nicchia dietro un tramezzo, furono trovati $ 5.000 in oro e una distilleria di whiskey perfettamente funzionante. Sulla scrivania si può vedere la bilancia da farmacia di George, con la quale pesava l’oro. Dietro le tende, in quella ch’era una volta la stanza segreta, si trova la riproduzione di una distilleria, assieme al termometro di George e ad alcuni misurini.
