When a company delays the release of its financial results because of an accounting error, spooked investors typically flee, and shares plummet.
Not so for Diamond Resort International timeshare operator based in Las Vegas. Its stock has fallen just 2.2 percent since it postponed its second-quarter earnings release on Aug. 1.
The reason for the delay, the company said, was a last-minute discovery by its auditor of a problem with the way Diamond had been valuing its inventory of unsold timeshare units since 2014. A restatement of the company’s net income may result.
It is unclear why Diamond’s auditor, BDO USA, just spotted a problem that began some time ago. BDO did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Seth Lubove, a Diamond spokesman, said the earnings delay was “an unexpected and unfortunate occurrence.” But fixing the problem will be “noncash in nature,” he said, and would have little impact on the company’s financial performance. Changing the figures will have no effect on Diamond’s compliance with the terms of its credit agreements, the company said.
The main reason Diamond’s stock has remained steady in the face of a possible restatement is its pending $2.2 billion acquisition by Apollo Global Management, the private equity giant. That buyout, announced in late June, is still on, Diamond said, regardless of the accounting problem.
After discussing the matter with Diamond, Apollo said in a statement that it was “confident this will not impact the timing of our acquisition on the terms previously announced.”
But it is notable that one longtime insider at the company decided not to wait for the deal to go through to cash in a bounty of his Diamond shares. Lowell D. Kraff is a principal at Trivergance L.L.C., a private equity firm he co-founded with David F. Palmer, Diamond’s chief executive. Mr. Kraff, a former vice chairman of Diamond’s board and a director since 2007, resigned his position in May at the company’s annual meeting.
On July 14, Mr. Kraff began selling his Diamond shares in the open market, regulatory filings show. He made his last sale on July 28, just days before the accounting disclosure. Over the period, he exercised call options on the company’s stock and sold 1.26 million Diamond shares. That represented 28 percent of his holdings and generated $38.2 million. Had he tendered his shares at the offer price, he would have received approximately $75,000 more.
I asked Mr. Kraff about the timing of his sales. In a statement provided by his lawyer, Mr. Kraff noted that his board service at Diamond ended in May. “I had no knowledge of the possible restatement prior to the company’s public announcement in early August,” he said.
As for why he chose to sell in the open market rather than tender his shares to Apollo at a slightly higher price only a few weeks later, Mr. Kraff cited “personal financial reasons, including to repay borrowings associated with the exercise of the call options earlier in July.”
The company said it was not aware of Mr. Kraff’s sales until they were disclosed publicly.

Source text - English Geeks may roll their eyes at the news that Namibia is only now getting its first mainframe-a technology that most consider obsolete. Yet the First National Bank of Namibia, which bought the computer, is at the leading edge of a trend. Comeback is too strong a word, but mainframes no longer look that outdated.
Until the 1980s mainframes, so called because the processing unit was originally housed in a huge metal frame, ruled supreme in corporate data centers. Since then, these big, tightly laced bundles of software and hardware have been dethroned by "distributed systems", meaning networks of smaller and cheaper machines, usually not based on proprietary technology. But many large companies still run crucial applications on the "big iron": there are still about 10,000 in use worldwide. Withdraw money or buy insurance, and in most cases mainframes are handling the transaction.
Some companies like mainframes because they are reliable, secure and easy to maintain. But others have no choice. Banks, for instance, use decades-old applications to manage customer accounts. Moving these programs to other computers would be expensive and sometimes impossible. Most firms that can move off the mainframe have already done so.
High "switching costs" explain in large part why mainframes are still a good business for IBM. It is the only big firm left selling them, at prices that start at $100,000 but often reach the millions. Sales of mainframes are said to have brought in about $3.5 billion a year, on average, in the past decade. Although this is only about 3.5% of the firm's overall revenue, each dollar spent on hardware pulls in at least as much from sales of software and maintenance contracts.

Source text - English The proliferation of touch screens in electronic devices over the past two or three years has been so rapid that you may have found yourself trying to press an on-screen button or icon when sitting at your computer only to realize that it is not a touch screen. Many mobile phones now have touch-screen interfaces, as do satellite-navigation systems and portable games consoles.
So the touch screen could be on the verge of becoming a standard part of computer interfaces, just as the mouse did in the 1980s. Many people thought that would never happen: surely switching between keyboard and mouse would slow people down and make them less productive? In fact, mouse-driven interfaces can be far more efficient, at least for some tasks. The same seems likely to be true of touch-screen interfaces. The touch screen will probably not replace the mouse and keyboard, but will end up being used for some tasks.
Today countless supermarket checkouts, restaurant tills, automated-teller machines, airport check-in kiosks, museum information-booths6 and voting kiosks use touch screens. In these situations, touch screens have many advantages over other input methods. That they do not allow rapid typing does not matter; it is more important that they are hard-wearing, weatherproof and simple to use.

Сенсорные экраны максимально близки к тому, чтобы стать стандартной составляющей интерфейса компьютера, так же как это произошло с компьютерной мышью в восьмидесятые годы.
