Source text - English Business Management source Text translation:
The rapid and significant progress in the production function, as a result of the emergence of new manufacturing strategies, has led to profound changes in production methods. One of the practices most affected by these changes is cost management. Up until the 1970's, direct labour and raw material costs represented a very high proportion of total costs. On the other hand, indirect costs, such as quality, production control, purchasing, etc., represented a relatively minor proportion. As a result, the traditional methods of allocating indirect costs, for the sake of simplification, recommended the distribution of such expenses according to criteria based on product mix volumes. However, over time, the product cost structure has changed such that the indirect expenses, which had been of the order of 5% of total costs, today have reached average values higher than 35%. In the case of companies with a high degree of automation, such expenses can be as high as 70% of total costs. Moreover, in the past, the cost of measuring expenses was high while product diversification was limited. Today, due to technological advances, measurement costs are much more accessible, allowing companies to make progress towards a more precise calculation of costs (Cogan, 1994). Also, currently, there is a trend towards the diversification of products and services aimed at achieving an operation that provides customers with tailor-made products and services. Taking all these considerations together one can conclude that the traditional cost management process has become very inadequate and that, therefore, new costing methods need to be researched and developed. This challenge to cost management has led to the emergence of a number of new concepts, the most successful of which has been Activity-Based Costing (ABC). The basic premise of ABC is to treat the indirect costs as if they were direct costs, by an analysis of the underlying activities.

The name Luis von Ahn may not mean very much to you, but certainly you will have cursed him whenever you tried to access an e-mail and encountered a Captcha - those distorted letters that are there to prove you are a human-being and not a spamming robot or a criminal. This computer scientist is one of the creators of this technology that so irritates internet users. However the majority of users are unaware that because of it two million books per year are digitalised and made available for free on the internet. Behind the scenes of this achievement is crowd-sourcing, that massive on-line collaboration, to which von Ahn resorts once again, this time applying it to an even more Herculean task: translating the content of the internet while teaching languages to millions of users and without charging anything for it.
