Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents. So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns! I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being. Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me. And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?	Translation - German Als meine Frau mir erzählte, sie sei schwanger, überkam mich dieses Gefühl, was man an einer nach unten stürzenden Achterbahn bekommt. Oh mein Gott, wie aufgeregt ich war, nun ja, bloß … Das hieß Elternsein, nun, also Eltern. Nun stand ich da, mit großen Kuller-Augen wie eine ärmlich gezeichnete Comicfigur, mit einem Fragezeichen über meinen Kopf schwebend, während ich mich versuchte auf die restlose Fürsorge und Verantwortung für ein anderes Lebewesen vorzubereiten, neben meiner Katze. Ich wurde verantwortlich dafür alles zu tun, dass dieser kleine Mensch nicht zu einem voll ausgewachsenen Monster wird. Wenn das Kind zu einem asozialen Penner wird – meine Schuld! Das Kind findet Luxemburg auf der Landkarte nicht – ich werde blamiert, weil ich ihm keine bessere Bildung geleistet habe. Dann muss eine Therapie her, und das bleibt natürlich auch auf mich hängen. Eine Menge von Möglichkeiten, wo es schief gehen kann! Ich erinnere mich noch, als eines Tages mein Vater sich mit mir hinsetzte und in Verlegenheit über Blümchen und Bienchen erzählte. Wir beiden haben dann die peinlichste und qualvollste halbe Stunde meines Lebens erlebt. Ich kann es einem anderen Mensch niemals antun. Aber ich mache mir vielleicht zu vielen Gedanken. Ich schaffe das schon, rede ich mir zu; ich werde einen großartigen Vater abgeben. Mein Kind wird sich zu einem ausgewachsenen, gebildeten, aufrechten Weltbürger entwickeln und er oder sie wird mich nicht hassen. Und dann stelle ich mir das Baby vor, wie es sich sicher und geborgen im Bauch meiner Frau wiegt, und plötzlich die Augen aufschlägt, als der Gedanke ihm in den Sinn kommt: „Und was dann, wenn mein Paps es nicht bringt?“
