2) When upgrading to SDL Trados Studio 2009 you will also receive a permanent license of SDL Trados 2007 Suite. Both products can be installed in parallel. Please be aware you will however need to de-activate your previous software license before receiving your new licenses. If you would like to retain your previous license (for example SDL Trados 2006 or Trados 7), please consider purchasing a full new license.

If I understand correctly, the only licence that will ever be permanent is that of SDL Trados 2007 Suite - all the other ones will be wiped off the face of the Earth, right? I will lose my 2007 Freelance licence if I upgrade, right?

Please can you explain the difference between Trados 2007 Suite and 2007 Freelance? I learned here few weeks ago it is the same thing, only the latter does not have the suite patch? (Which I personally got offered together with the basic installation set.)
And I think if they differ it, they would mention it together with 2006 or 7 example above? But of course the best is if someone from SDL explains/confirms.

Then, what are we all so happy about?

We get 2009 and can keep 2007 forever.

Thank you for listening to our concerns and reacting in such a short time!

I have activated my permanent license for SDL Trados Suite 2007 and now feel somewhat better

Well done SDL Jun 10, 2009

This is a very positive step in what I believe to be the right direction. I echo what has already been said, and take my hat of to you, SDL, for biting the bullet and taking action.

I also received a call from an engineer, despite not having a support contract, relatively quickly after logging a case. The issue has not yet been resolved, but I do appreciate the fact that they appear to be taking our problems seriously.

There appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.

I have the same problem Jun 10, 2009

artg wrote:

How long does/will it take for the 2009 license to be posted to my SDL acct.?

I have released the 'new' 2007 license I had received and activated, and it did get upgraded to a 'no expiration' license, but the 2009 license still has not shown up on the My Licenses page....

Should I wait 12/24 hrs? etc...

Thanks!

Not so, apparently Jun 10, 2009

Tomas Mosler wrote:

It would seem you didn't read my post you were replying to. As per the information currently on the SDL website, only the 2007 Suite licence will be valid indefinitely. Those who are upgrading from anything older than that (including yours truly) are invited to buy the whole thousand dollar thing instead of the upgrade. Please, read it again.

So, no, we don't get to keep anything except 2007 Suite. If I upgrade, I will not get to keep my 2007 Freelance licence. Since this thread has just turned into a Thank you, SDL! thread, I'll just drop the issue and go shopping for a replacement CAT tool.

Trados 2007 Freelance 8.0 Jun 10, 2009

I think the question was if it works when one has a "Trados 2007 Freelance" version without the latest 2007 Suite upgrade. Does the offer work the same way then? Your first post seems to say the opposite.

I think I have the same problem as Viktoria. I just looked it up, I'm currently working with "Version 8.0 Freelance, Build 835". My account on sdl.com says I have a licence for Trados 2007 Freelance 8.0. So that's not the 2007 Suite, is it? The product names are so confusing.

So what happens with us then? We can't upgrade to the 2007 Suite anymore and there is no possibility to upgrade to Studio 2009 and keep our unlimited Trados 2007 version?

Thanks for the public apology. Six days from payment, however, I can't still upgrade my 2007 Freelance licence, as it is still shown "in use". Somebody shuld fix these things FAST.

shopping with Victoria Jun 10, 2009

Victoria, I fully agree.

Actually, it's quite a nice and kind move by SDL posting an apology and slightly changing its weird licensing policy. I respect their admitting being wrong and now trying to change things for the better.

On the contrary, and this is my personal opinion, SDL stepped in line with other software companies - anyone remember MS and Vista? - that is misusing its clients as beta testers. I know there have been beta tests before but this disastrous release product left too many people out there in the rain, so I assume more thorough beta tests would simply have been too expensive. Also, it seems to be rather difficult to get support - in one of the threads there has been a story of someone having a support contract and also having difficulties getting help - which leaves a rather unfavorable overall picture for me.

I've been using Trados for almost 10 years now and have been happy with it so far. Even thought about purchasing a support contract and upgrading to the new version. I'm glad I didn't and I really have to say a big THANK YOU to all of you for posting all your difficulties with upgrading to the new version and licensing on ProZ!

Best of luck to you all !!

I think I join Victoria on her shopping tour for an alternative CAT tool, someone told me Deja Vu would be an option...

Hi Tomas,
here's a short build guide:
T2007 Suite = build 863 (includes Passolo Essential additionally)
T2007 = builds 8.00 up to 836
T2006 = builds 756 and 76x
Trados 7 = earlier than 756 and later than 6.xx

How long does/will it take for the 2009 license to be posted to my SDL acct.? Jun 10, 2009

Hi,

I wanted to give a more definite response to you on this one as this should be instantaneous, but as I was unable to identify you from the details available in the forum I couldn't check your accounts.

So, my suggestion would be as follows, whether you have a support account or not. Go to _http://talisma.sdl.com/ and select the "Solution Finder" Tab. I have had another option added to this today to make this easy so all you do is;

Select "Licensing Problems" and then check "SDL Trados Studio 2009: I have returned my 2007 license but my new 2009 license is still not in my account". This will give you a form to complete with details that allow us to identify you and the issue should be resolved quickly thereafter.

I hope this helps.

Why do I need to keep SDL Trados 2007 Suite? Jun 10, 2009

Astrid Elke Johnson wrote:

I do not see the sense in having a permanent licence for the 2007 Suite, if it can no longer be used for translating, due to having had to uninstall Multiterm 2007 in order to install Studio 2009.

Hi Astrid,

A good question, and I will try to give you a few reasons here and also answer the MT question;

- It allows you to work entirely with legacy workflows (source to ttx, word bak files) that Studio would handle another way.

- It is necessary with this release to facilitate the TM conversion process as Studio uses some of the 2007 components to take a .tmw TM, convert to .tmx and then into .sdltm. I did see a few posts on one of the forums where users could not convert their TM and the reason was that they had uninstalled the 2007 version altogether.

- You can use MT 2009 with SDL Trados 2007 so you do not lose this ability to use MultiTerm

- You may have a client sending you old file formats such as FM7 which we no longer support in SDL Trados Studio 2009

I hope this explains a little?

There seems to be some confusion here. The license for SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance will allow you to license SDL Trados 2007 Freelance.
Suite is simply an upgrade to 2007 Freelance, you can't have both installed side by side anyways.

I fail to get the issue here?

So to summarise:
EVEN if you have only SDL Trados 2007 Freelance installed and NOT SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance, and you "ONLY" have a SDL Trados 2007 Suite Freelance License, it will FULLY license SDL Trados 2007 Freelance.
