Discussion

Thomas Walker Jan 7, 2016:
curve system? This is a very unusual & puzzling passage. In English at least, I have never, in more than 20 years of studying & reading about rivers, found any reference to a "curve system", referring to meanders or anything else. A Bing search for "sistema de curva" also returned almost nothing relevant in Spanish. I appreciate Muriel's research, but the Hayden ref is from 1874, long before modern geomorphology & river mechanics; I couldn't get the Veblungsnes link to work; & the last ref is about curve smoothing in graphing ("spline").
Even if we think "sistem de curva" is referring to meanders, I still can't make much sense out of its use in the phrase. I can understand conserving indigenous fish, native species, & water quality, but I'm not sure what it would mean to conserve meanders - even if it were a worthy goal, the river system usually wins, & goes where it needs to go to re-establish equilibrium. Usually, we're barely able to predict the future behavior of a meander system in any detail, much less take charge of the system & make it do what we want it to.

meandering river system

This could be a solution.

neutral philgoddard : I wondered about this, but it doesn't seem a very interesting thing to say about a river. Most rivers meander.

agree Cornelius Gillen : look at google earth images for the river and you will see that the river has huge meanders with point bars, etc., a classic

mainatins a beneficial curve system

I found a few references to river 'curve systems'. The point could be that it doesn't shift its course or that the curve system is beneficial. This phrase is the object of "conserva", which refers to several of its beneficial characteristics. Still, I would use different verbs with these elements because no one verb fits them all. Thus:

'supports endemic fish and native species, maintains a beneficial curve system, and offers consistently good water quality'
