"Penal colony" may be the best one to use. The "re-educational" aspect can be translated (as e.g. "resocializing colony") but is not generally recognised. "Labor colony" can be used in this meaning, as work reeducates :-))

: Единственный момент: ИТК и ВТК были упразднены в 1997 г. Именно тогда появились ИК и ВК. Наверное, российским властям хотелось избежать намека на "подневольный труд" заключенных.

: Абсолютно адекватно. Во-первых, точный англоязычный термин (для США, во всяком случае), во-вторых - перевод "обходит" слово "колония". Facility - понимай как хочешь (колония или тюрьма), но понятно, что место заключения.

I see the point of the comment to another answer that for a Russian context maybe direct translation of the Russian might be better, but it depends what sort of work is being translated. If this is for the more general reader,
more familar terms such as would be used in Britain or the USA would be better, I think.

: Sounds great to me, but Vladimir has a point about the word "labour". If the Russian authorities do not use it any more, translators have no choice but comply with it.

Спасибо, Ксения! А разница чисто возрастная: воспитательная - это для несовершеннолетних правонарушителей и малолетних преступников, а исправительная - для всех остальных.

Учитывая примечания Дуни (надеюсь, я не ошибаюсь в имени?) и Chekh'а, по-видимому, нужно два перевода, чтобы подчеркнуть разницу между исправительной и воспитательной колонией, что-нибудь вроде:
- correctional facility (исправительная)
- reformatory facility (воспитательная)
- correctional facility (исправительная)
- reformatory facility (воспитательная)

: По-моему, сохранять эту разницу в переводе нужно только в том случае, если мы хотим передать русскую специфику наименования этих учреждений. По сути же, в воспитательной колонии "воспитания" не больше, чем в исправительной. Дуня :-)

Согласна насчет воспитания, но поскольку по-русски они называтся по-разному, может быть и надо это подчеркнуть. Asker'у виднее.

Только что отинтерпретировал для группы, работающей с украинскими колониями для несовершеннолетних под эгидой ЕС. Так вот, во всех документах идет correction institution. Воспитательная колония - это из времен Макаренко (Куряжская колония, кстати, в родном Харькове, работал и там в прошлом году). Вот ее можно назвать reformatory, хотя сегодня такого официального названия, если не ошибаюсь, нет.
