JERUSALEM (JTA) — For Americans, the definition of national identity is straightforward: It goes hand in hand with citizenship. If you are an American citizen, you are also American by nationality. The same applies to the French, Germans and many others.
In Israel, however, there is a different but equally valid conception of the relationship between citizenship and nationality. Indeed, this understanding is central to Israel’s identity as a Jewish state.
The State of Israel maintains a national population registry in which every resident is classified by both “citizenship” and “nationality.” The citizenship of all Israelis is listed as “Israeli.” However, under “nationality,” Israelis are defined as belonging to different ethnic and religious groups, among them Jewish, Arab and Druze.
Several prominent Israelis — including a former education minister, a former Knesset member, a celebrated playwright and several Arab citizens — requested that the state recognize a new category of “Israeli” nationality that could be applied to all citizens, Jews and Arabs alike.
In a petition to the Israeli Supreme Court, they argued that the current nationality categorization...
W pierwszym przypadku Jewish podkreśla etniczność moim zdaniem, a nie obywatelstwo.
Is "Israeli" a Nationality? According to international law, Israeli citizens are Israeli nationals having Israeli nationality so the nationality exists. But an ongoing debate in Israeli politics is whether an Israeli nationality exists in a "deeper" sense. Does an Israeli nationality exist, distinct from a Jewish or Palestinian nationality?
Domestic Israeli law does not recognize an Israeli nationality.[9][better source needed] Citizens are registered along mostly ethnic affiliations, the main ones being Jewish, Arab, Druze and Circassian but foreign nationalities such as Egyptian, Georgian and Russian are also allowed. This registration was imprinted on Israeli identity card, which citizens are required to carry at all times under the field le'om (לאום) the Hebrew word for "nationality" or "ethnic affiliation." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_citizenship_law
> One can be Jewish and not live in Israel.
> Ethnicity and nationality are often confused.
> Judaism and mosaic faith are synonymous.
One can be Jewish and not live in Israel. Ethnicity and nationality are often confused, especially in countries where birth does not confer nationality. Judaism and mosaic faith are synonymous.
