English term

academy board

GBK English to French Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Definition from Oxford Reference:
An inexpensive board, made of cardboard, used as a surface for oil painting since the early 19th century, primarily for small paintings and sketches. Its cheapness made it particularly popular with amateurs.
Example sentences:
During the 19th century, a plethora of inventions and new artists' materials, such as millboards, academy boards, canvas boards, and related paraphernalia, including paint tubes, brushes, and Japanned boxes, were designed for portability and ease of assembly. These new tools of the artist's craft provided American artists with the means and capability to do on-site oil sketches. (JAIC)
An oil painting on academy board of a landscape by Dutch painter H. Verhaaf. Signed by hand to the lower right corner, the painting depicts a single path running adjacent to a wooded landscape and a river. The painting is mounted in a stained wood frame with a wire present to verso for hanging purposes. (Everything But The House)
Academy boards were manufactured from pulp board and primed with a lead pigment in a light gray or white color. To solve problems with warping, they were sometimes primed equally on the back surface (Gurney Journey)

support en carton

Definition from wikipedia:
Les supports en carton étaient utilisés au dix-neuvième siècle pour la peinture à l'huile. Ils étaient populaires au sein des peintres amateurs du fait de leur prix abordable et étaient utilisés principalement pour les peintures petits format ou esquisses.
Example sentences:
Beaucoup d'artistes impressionnistes français utilisaient le carton pour peindre des œuvres finies. Ils l'utilisaient pour sa texture et sa couleur de fond brun chaud. L'huile des peintures à l'huile est absorbée par les supports en cartons non apprêtés, donnant à la peinture un fini mat, lisse et agréable. (Marcel Spilliaert)
