fare riferimento

Italian to English Bus/Financial Government / Politics
Transcription of a court case. Discussion of the appointment of the board of directors.

Backed by? Seconded by? Put forward by?

So that I do not waste anybody's time: I am looking for an explanation of what is going on here, i.e. the relevance of the director's relationship with the politician, and maybe an English equivalent. I do not need to know that "fare riferimento" means "to make reference". Thanks in advance.

he reported to professor Y

in a "boss/employee" kind of relationship, maybe I'd use the verb to report.
or something like "he was under professor Y's orders"
Peer comment(s):

agree Matteo Latini (X) : I think this is the sense. other suggestions: he was accountable to, or he was connected to

to be connected to / backed by

Hope it helps

I don\'t think that was a \"boss/employee\" relationship... it seems to me that it\'s a court case for a suspect of corruption, since there\'s politics mingled with the Board of Directors of a company, right? So I think \"connection\" may serve both purposes: that of translating the essential meaning (the relationship) and that of adding the notion of possible corruption in that relationship...
