In translating a manual for a "sloffenvuller" i.e., a machine used to fill "tray's" with "sigarendoosjes en sigarenblikken" into Italian, I wonder if a Dutch cigar smoker would buy cigars in cartons, like for cigarettes ("stecche di sigarette" in Italian), or should I understand "sigaren" as "sigaretten" as in this sentence glimpsed on the web: "Hij is 43, maar hij rookt al vanaf zijn twaalfde een slof sigaren"?

As previously described, cigarette products were defined by a unique combination of brand (for example Pall Mall, Marlboro, Dunhill), brand variant or descriptor (for example, superkings, red, yellow, capsule), pack size (number of cigarettes per pack) and multipack size (number of packs).

Hence, one example of a cigarette product would be a single pack of 20 Dunhill International cigarettes; another a multipack of 5 packs of 18 Pall Mall Superkings Blue Capsule Cigarettes.

Hand-rolling tobacco products were defined by a unique combination of brand name (for example Cutters Choice, Drum), brand variant or descriptor (gold, handy pack, blonde), pack volume (weight in grams) and multipack size (number of packs per multipack).

Cigars did used to be sold in vending machines Cigars did used to be sold in vending machines but the idea of a "slof" is a carton containing multiple packets. I have always seen cigars sold in solid boxes and not in packets and I have never seen a multi-pack containing multiple boxes of cigars. So whereas Writeaway and Michael's answers could well apply to cigarettes, I have my doubts about cigars. Pity tobacconists are no longer so easily found.

Please don't post another question! You'll make things even more confusing.

The text you're translating is not a seven-year-old Reddit post (which continues 'per week' or something like that), but a machine manual. A slof is a carton, so I assume your machine takes (say) ten packs and wraps them together in cellophane.

@Luca The "sloffen" in your text seems to refer to the larger containers for the individual cigar boxes. The "sloffenvuller" inserts the individual cigar boxes into these larger packages/boxes/trays, whatever you choose to call them.

What can be said unequivocally What can be said unequivocally is that sigaren are cigars and there is no way that they are cigarettes. Cigars are typically available in boxes, not packets. The idea of them being made available in vending machines is something I am not familiar with and have never heard of. Cigar smokers tend to be quite selective about their cigars and I have never heard of vending machine sales. If I had to translate this, I would research that specific aspect to find out if cigars are actually marketed that way.

Sigaren = cigars I think using "slof" is uncommon in this context. It appears to be a Reddit comment https://www.reddit.com/r/thenetherlands/comments/60ogv9/offi... and it is a user comment that I can't find in the thread, only in the source. It sounds like it is meant to exaggerate how many cigars a day he smokes. I believe a common amount is 3 cigars a day.

Thanks! I think box might also work, depending on the size of the outer packaging being used by the sloffenvuller machine
