Dutch term

thematische verlof/verloven

FVA Dutch to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) Privacyverklaring of a Belgian company

Any suggestions? My own context is a privacyverklaring of a Belgian company.

my actual context:
Michael Beijer (asker) May 29, 2023:
@Textpertise Thanks, I tried that, but think it might be a dead end.

Looking at: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verlof

"Arbeid

I therefore still think that all "thematische verloven" means is: "various types of leave taken for specific purposes", etc. That is, it doesn't refer to any single, specific type of leave, but to "various types of leave taken for specific purposes".
Textpertise May 29, 2023:
Further to my post just now I don't have the time to do it for you at the moment, Michael, but in your position, I would check the legislation cited in the above Paterna article to see how it has been translated there. The legislation pre-dates Brexit so my hunch would be that you should have official EU adopted translations that can be found.
Textpertise May 29, 2023:
It is a strictly Belgian expression https://www.partena-professional.be/en/knowledge-center/info... would seem to be another example where thematic leave is used. I doubt whether the term is in use in either the US or the UK. Do you require the equivalent there for your purposes?
Michael Beijer (asker) May 29, 2023:
hmm just noticed it is in the Juridisch-Economisch Lexicon too:

(B) thematisch verlof =
thematic leave
Michael Beijer (asker) May 29, 2023:
WordReference https://www.wordreference.com/fren/congé thématique

has:

Français:
• congé thématique
France (type de congé legal)

Anglais:
• special leave, leave for a specific purpose n
• (US) family and medical leave n
Michael Beijer (asker) May 29, 2023:
~ In the "PAGINA VAN DE BELGISCHE VERTALER", I found this:

=>

thematische verloven = congés thématique

Linguee then has:

=>

congés thématique = leave taken for specific purposes (banquenationale.be)
congés thématique = special leave (nbb.be)

TDVTrans May 29, 2023:
leave of absence That's I think what they would call it here in the US, no? Not sure about British English though.
Michael Beijer (asker) May 29, 2023:
hmm So far, I was using "various types of leave", as this seems to cover the list @ https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verlof

I have also seen various Belgian websites translate this as "thematic leave", but thought this seemed a bit too literal.

James Duncan May 29, 2023:
According to what is stated at https://www.rva.be/burgers/loopbaanonderbreking-tijdskrediet... it refers to 4 specific types of special leave.

Leave systems/types of leave to help combine work and family life

In line with what Writeaway suggested, perhaps this could be a way of describing 'thematische verloven'.

Leave systems
In Belgium, several governmental leave systems exist that are specifically designed to help combine work and family life: parental leave, medical assistance leave, palliative care leave and time credit/care credit. In most of the systems, there is a possibility to temporarily reduce your employment by 100%, 50% or 20%. A 10% reduction (0.5 day/week or 1 day/2weeks) is also possible under the parental leave system. The reduced wage is (partly) compensated by an allowance from the Belgian and/or regional government.
Note from asker:
Thanks, in my context, this seems to work best: "various types of leave to help combine work and family life". There is no need to mention the Dutch/French, and use brackets or whatever as it's just a list of things meant as general info (see screenshot in dbox!).

Leave From Work

https://www.personio.com/hr-lexicon/types-of-leave/#what-is-...
"What Is Leave From Work?

Leave is the time that employees take off work during otherwise normal working hours which they are entitled to, by law, or by contract. The thing to know is that leave comes in various forms and various levels of entitlement.
How Many Types Of Leave Are There?

It depends on the company! Companies can determine how generous they want to be with types of leave — but they must also provide the minimum requirements required by law."

thematisch verlof/congé thématique

You can't translate this into English, because you're then creating a meaningless statement. English is not an official language in Belgium, so this term doesn't have an English name there.

I would say something like: "In Belgium, these are referred to collectively as 'thematisch verlof/congé thématique'", possibly followed by a literal translation in brackets.

Makes sense it's in Dutch too. Most such Belgian documents are in both languages and even German. I always had Fr and Dutch versions to look at when I translated them into English. Helpful in case one language is unclear.
