Spanish term

entre sollozos de desesperación

Non-PRO Spanish to English Other Poetry & Literature Fable.(Fiction)
I would like to know the best translation of this phrase from Latin American Spanish into American English. Translator colleagues from Spain, feel free to send me your suggestions as well. Is okay to translate it as between desperation sobs?

This is from the story about The flautist of Hamelin.

Here is the full paragraph:

Cogidos de la mano y sonrientes, formaban una gran hilera, sorda a los ruegos y gritos de sus padres que en vano, entre sollozos de desesperación, intentaban impedir que siguieran al flautista.

Nada lograron y el flautista se los llevó lejos, muy lejos.....

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): María Perales, Toni Castano, Carol Gullidge

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Thanks for your help Kristina and David.
Kristina Love Sep 15, 2021:
Be sure not to say "desperation sobs" - it would be very unnatural.

between sobs of desperation

I would personally go with "between" rather than "amid" or "among" because during the sobs they are incapacitated - they attempt to stop their children from leaving between sobs. I would say "sobs" rather than "cries" because presumably "cries" has just been used for "gritos."

Forgot to add: "Between" because it makes it more clear that it is the parents themselves who are sobbing - not others around them.
