Italian term

modello decotto dell’ISI

So who are not the most disciplined?
Michael Korovkin Mar 23, 2020:
is ours to question why? I also believe it's a typo. However, unless able to clear the issue with the client, I would not take it upon myself to correct those allegedly sloppy Italian writers, but translate "decotto" as a term intended, and perhaps just put "sic" parenthetically.
Cedric Randolph Mar 23, 2020:
yes probably a typo We know well that Italian text writers from every field are not the most disciplined when it comes to proofreading their work with great scrutiny. Regardless of Dr. Hager's clever solution, which I personally like and can see, I also belive this to be a typo.
Shabelula Mar 23, 2020:
ma dai sarà un typo!
philgoddard Mar 23, 2020:
Il modello dedotto dell’ISI = the ISI model? ISI is Istituto Nazionale di Statistica.

failed ISI model

In italian, "decotto" means "insolvent" if we refer to a company. As here the text refers to an economic model, I would suggest the term "FAILED"
My best guess is that the acronym ISI refers to "Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI)", a trade and economic policy which advocates replacing foreign imports with domestic production. (this should be checked with the client for clarification)
Example sentence:

"In buona sostanza, Cuba era un’economia decotta che veniva sovvenzionata dall’Unione Sovietica"

"trattasi di un titolo con rating “spazzatura”, di un’economia decotta e che ha dovuto ristrutturare il suo debito sovrano nel 2012"

while the direct translation, decoction, exists, the meaning is clearly the pejorative and much more common concocted. Don't have to know what ISI is,either !

agree Cedric Randolph : The contextual tone seems to substantiate your theory

disagree philgoddard : I can't find any dictionary support for this, and the contextual tone is neutral.

agree Michael Korovkin : "decotto" IS the context here: if not pejorative it's certainly flippant(cooked up or rather brewed up)...unless of course there is some "dictionary" "supporting" a thesis that "decotto" may be appropriate and "neutral" for an economics text...

agree philgoddard : I'd say "the ISI", and explain what it is.
