One other interesting type of nonprofit attempts to fight disconnection and declines in social capital by preserving traditional jobs. An example is the Martha’s Vineyard Fishermen’s Preservation Trust, which has created a “permit bank”—a collection of licenses to fish for different types of seafood in the waters around the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard.

These permits have increased in value so much that many local fishers can no longer afford them. The Fishermen’s Preservation Trust uses its funds to buy permits on the open market. It then leases the associated fishing rights at below-market rates to islanders, many of whom come from families that have been fishing for generations. Organizations such as the trust show us that in addition to conserving land and animals, it might also be possible to conserve jobs and the communities built up around them.
