: The abbreviation of monsieur is just M. whereas Mssrs. is the abbreviation of the plural Messieurs. That explains the double s.

You are right, it's the abbreviation of Messieur, not Monsieur. And not Mister, in any case :)) But why do you keep talking about plural? In the Asker's context it is definitely singular: Mssr. Howden, Mssr. Hamworthy.
