French term

Corner shop

French to English Marketing Retail Events design
Context: website for an events marketing company
The sentence: "XXX intervient sur tous types d’espaces de vente ou d’exposition : stands, retail, corners shops, Pop-up stores, espaces professionnels…"

The French seem to use the term 'corner shop' for a particular type of small sales area. I have found some descriptions here:
http://www.flex-bs.com/construction-modulaire/corner-shop-mo...
https://directioncentreville.wordpress.com/2015/09/24/shop-i...

I'm not sure what the term would be in English since 'corner shop' conjures up something completely different for me!

Thanks for your help.

Discussion

Sheila Wilson Jul 22, 2016:
Your second ref gives it AFAIC, it's a shop-in-shop. I agree that a corner shop is something different altogether.

A suggestion.

Although the term corner shop clearly will not do, “corner” as used in your second reference Shop-in-shop & corner : de nouvelles formes de commerce does seem to be creeping in to English, often in the form of “in-store corner”. See some interesting discussion in this related question from Italian to English.

However, this use of corner usually seems to originate from French, Italian or Spanish sources. A possible alternative might therefore be “branded area”. Your second link makes a distinction between “shop-in-shop” and “corner” and the distinction between “shop-in-shop” and “branded area” in English seems comparable.

In the wholesale or multi-brand channel there are still essentially two main types of layout: the branded area and the shop in shop retailing concept.
The branded area simply means customising an area devoted to the brand and generally does not exceed 50/80 sq. m. It is a relatively expensive investment which aims to “decorate” the fittings and layout of the store through key features such as images, graphics, POP (Point of Purchase) material and decorative accessories.
The shop in shop retailing concept involves full-scale decoration of the sale area that the dealer makes available to the brand. The fittings, which are much more extensive than the “branded area” concept, can therefore include fittings and furnishings, lighting, flooring, photographic images and anything that can create emotional entertainment, and often comes with the support of a specially trained sales assistant.

Wrangler has developed a small-scale version of the shop-in-shop concept it introduced to multiple retailers earlier this year, in order to enable smaller stores to create a branded area which holds up to 200 pieces from the collection.

FRANCE. French travel retailer Aelia has just opened its new branded beauty concept at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport featuring separate branded areas for three leading beauty houses.
She added: “The F1 shop is very lively now. We have corners of 20sq m devoted to Kenzo, Hugo Boss, Armani and Calvin Klein. The fragrance brands in these corners are really increasing [turnover] tremendously.

concession (stand)

Having read your links, this sounds very much like a concession stand, for example a perfume or make-up stand within a department store. It's owned and run by a different company but operates within the department store and I assume they pay some kind of rent/percentage.

disagree Raph Torrance : Whilst yours is a good EN>FR translation, OP was asking about the use of 'corner shop' in French and what they intend it to mean (which, it turns out, is a concession stand).

I think the Larousse's suggestion is not that helpful for the way in which the term is used in commercial and sales contexts in French. Moving swiftly on...

I don't think it is a ship-in-shop as teh third in the above list distinguishes "corner" from "ship-in-shop".

Maybe a "corner stand" might work.
