Source text - Italian Il presente elaborato si prefigge lo scopo di indicare un ambito di studio e di ricerca filosofica non sufficientemente esplorato, ovvero l’analisi delle idee riformiste che hanno animato l’ambiente accademico della prima università secolare del mondo arabo, l’Università del Cairo. Parallelamente è stato preso in considerazione il declino dell’ideale della continuità dello scambio culturale tra Egitto ed Europa, portato avanti da Taha Husayn. La realizzazione di tale ideale può essere visto come il tentativo, da parte di Husayn, di rendere il dibattito intellettuale riformista al di fuori delle élites. Il primo passo verso questo traguardo sarebbe stata l’acquisizione del metodo filologico scientifico applicato dagli orientalisti europei per l’interpretazione dei testi. In questo modo si sarebbe creata la possibilità di sottrarre l’esegesi delle opere letterarie e la didattica delle scienze umane al monopolio dell’autorità religiosa. In questa prospettiva è stata inserita nell’elaborato la vita di Paul Kraus e la sua fondamentale opera filologica sull’alchimista medievale Jābir ibn Ḥayyān. Kraus fu uno degli ultimi arabisti occidentali ad essere attivo all’Università del Cairo. I sempre più impetuosi movimenti islamisti sorti negli anni ’20 del XX secolo, hanno provocato, più o meno indirettamente, la fine del contributo accademico europeo, all’accelerazione del tramonto della nahda e all’attenuazione del fermento intellettuale riformista che aveva preso slancio nel secolo precedente.
Le mie ricerche sono state guidate da un atteggiamento volto a far emergere i tratti filosofici insiti nel pensiero degli intellettuali egiziani che più hanno influenzato la scena culturale della nahda tra il XIX e il XX secolo. Tale atteggiamento è stato da me ritenuto il più adeguato a conseguire una più completa, profonda, fondata e chiara conoscenza critica del rapporto tra cultura islamica e modernità.
Il lettore deve aspettarsi uno scritto che non è stato potuto essere arricchito di maggiori fonti ed opere attinenti, essendo molte di esse assenti nelle biblioteche dell’Università di Pisa. Lo scritto, tuttavia, si configura come una solida base per chiunque voglia dedicarsi allo studio del pensiero arabo moderno e contemporaneo, decidendo quindi di confrontarsi con temi e concetti familiari, quali la libertà, la democrazia, l’uguaglianza e l’autonomia di pensiero, visti però dalla peculiare prospettiva del mondo islamico moderno.
Translation - English This abstract aims to cover a field of study and of philosophical research which has not as yet been subject to sufficient exploration – that is, the analysis of the Modernist ideas which sparked the academic environment of the first secular university in the Arab world, the University of Cairo. In parallel, I have also considered the decline of the model of continuity of the cultural exchange between Egypt and Europe, brought forward by Taha Husayn. The creation of this model can be seen as an attempt on Husayn’s part to remove the Modernist intellectual debate from the exclusively élite sphere. The first step towards this goal would have been the acquisition of the scientific philological method as applied by the European Orientalists for the interpretation of texts. In this way it would have become possible to take back the monopoly of critical licence on literary works and the teaching of humanities from the religious authorities. With regard to this, the life of Paul Kraus and his fundamental philological work on the medieval alchemist Jābir ibn Ḥayyān have been included in this proposal. Kraus was one of the last Western Arabists to be active at the University of Cairo. The increasingly tempestuous Islamist movements which arose in the 1920s more or less indirectly put an end to European academic contribution, the acceleration of the nahda’s decline and the attenuation of the Modernist intellectual turmoil which had gained momentum during the century before. My research has been guided by an approach intended to bring out the philosophical aspects inherent in the thought of the Egyptian intellectuals who had the most marked influence on the cultural scene of the nahda between the 19th and 20th centuries. I considered this approach the most fitting one to help me obtain as complete, well-founded and clear a knowledge of the relationship between Islamic culture and modernity as possible.
The reader should bear in mind that this work could not be enriched by more numerous sources or pertinent works, seeing as the University of Pisa’s libraries lack most of these. The work, however, can be considered a solid base for whoever wishes to commit to the study of modern and contemporary Arab thought, and by doing so deciding to come face to face with familiar themes and concepts, such as freedom, democracy, equality, and freedom of thought, seen, however, from the singular perspective of the modern Islamic world.
