tools for parents
Hi,
I’m not sure about the meaning of “work through the concepts” in the following passage taken from a workbook for parents. This workbook contains exercises and activities for parents and their kids; some of these activities require the parent to reflect on his/her parenting strategies and to write down their answers to a series of questions.
So, I was wondering whether “work through” in this case refers to simply reading and thinking through the concepts of the book before joining the group activity or whether it might mean that the reader should also apply the concepts (e.g. doing the exercises of the book) before joining the group led by a clinician or educator?
Thank you in advance for any hint!

We envision that you will use this workbook individually, by reading it and writing in it on your own. But we’ve also designed it with groups in mind. Certain clinicians and educators may lead groups of individuals who * work through the concepts * on their own, then come together and share what they discovered for themselves. Or even if you’re not a professional, feel free to gather friends and fellow caregivers to discuss what you each discover as you explore the ideas we’ve included here. Sharing and examining these concepts with others will only deepen your understanding of them and help you apply them in ways that make your relationship with your kids that much more meaningful and significant.

I think "exploring" is implied as it then goes on to say you will discuss what you've found out in a group format

I believe that by thinking about and trying to put these concepts into practice, it will help the individuals be better able to discuss these and formulate questions about them when they meet in the clinician-led group

You're welcome. Yes, obviously they will be better able to apply the concepts once they are better understood ( after discussion and Q&A) but I think they should try them out in advance.

Note from asker:
Thank you, Gallagy! Actually, that was also my first hypothesis...but then I thought that for some parents it might be difficult to do the activities on their own right from the start... Maybe I could say "trying" to put these concepts", just as you said, so it will feel less challenging, maybe... Your help is always very valuable! |
