Italian to English Art/Literary Architecture

So far I've only found online references to this in the context of hair care. But the text I'm translating has to do with repurposing buildings. The quote:

Le riflessioni più recenti nel campo dell’estetica propongono una interpretazione più complessa della relazione tra soggetto e realtà circostante che viene sintetizzata con il concetto di Atmosfera. Che è strumento proprio del soggetto che se ne serve per «tonalizzare proiettivamente il mondo esterno».

In the hair care context, it means to add pigment in order to be able to further color/dye the hair... don't know if that's what's meant here.
