Source text - Italian 1. INTRODUZIONE
Visione apostolica dei Paolini e delle Paoline
Questo seminario conferma che, attraverso Paolo di Tarso e Giacomo Alberione, ab-biamo ricevuto da Dio, una missione specifica per il nostro tempo. Sentiamo, come loro, la “gravità della la missione che il Signore ci ha affidato” (AD 209).
Ripensare insieme lo specifico dell’azione pastorale e dell’esperienza di fede dei Pao-lini e delle Paoline nella Chiesa attuale, tenendo presente la nostra missione come co-municatori, è l’obiettivo degli ultimi giorni del nostro seminario. Questa sfida ci con-duce alle fonti genuine della nostra vocazione, per cercare i riferimenti fondamentali, che ci permettano di qualificare la nostra esperienza di fede e i contenuti dell’ editoriale multimediale internazionale paolina.
La “centralità della comunicazione come nuova evangelizzazione” è un elemento co-stitutivo perenne della nostra missione. Per la predicazione, con i mezzi di comunica-zione sociale, Alberione ha costruito la Congregazione dei Paolini (1914) e delle Paoli-ne (1915), al fine di configurare una nuova forma di evangelizzazione.
Riflettendo sui contenuti dell’esperienza di fede in San Paolo e sui contenuti dell’editoriale multimediale internazionale paolina, dobbiamo considerare che il “cari-sma paolino è una unità inseparabile dalla spiritualità centrata in Cristo Maestro e da un servizio pastorale specifico nella comunità ecclesiale” . Per questa “nuova vocazio-ne” nella Chiesa, Alberione cercò una opzione spirituale ispirata a San Paolo e alla formazione di “nuovi apostoli” pieni di sapienza e di fervore . Alberione non ha inteso fondare una casa editoriale cattolica, ma creare una nuova vocazione, una nuova “pre-dicazione” nella Chiesa.
La chiave ermeneutica di San Paolo e di Giacomo Alberione è la pastorale. Una pasto-rale comunicazionale evangelizzatrice che ha le sue proprie esigenze. Con una visione soprannaturale, Alberione affermava che la finalità del nostro apostolato è pastorale, cioè, dare Dio agli uomini e dare gli uomini a Dio, in Cristo Gesù (Vademecum, 1205). L’apostolato della comunicazione è frutto di una spiritualità vissuta da ogni membro in particolare e dalla congregazione in generale, cioè, non è sufficiente per la missione la produzione editoriale, senza una vita in Dio. È da questo che i prodotti editoriali diven-tano una testimonianza forte di una esperienza vitale.
Tanto nella visione di Paolo, come in quella di Alberione, non si può isolare l’esperienza di fede dall’unità globale della missione paolina. Cioè i contenuti, gli strumenti e i linguaggi dell’annuncio del Vangelo che devono essere utilizzati, non si possono usare in modo indipendente dagli impegni assunti con gli interlocutori, con le culture e le tradizioni di coloro per i quali si sviluppa la nostra vocazione.
Bisogna precisare che San Paolo è il prototipo della sequela di Cristo che Alberione pone come base della nostra missione, dato che intende fondere queste variabili – come espresso nel paragrafo precedente – in un solo insieme, cioè, la predicazione della Buo-na Novella. Già nel l925, scrivendo ai Cooperatori, il Beato spiega questo compito di Paolo: prima di tutto nelle relazioni con i destinatari della missione di Paolo che sono i popoli gentili, i più lontani. In secondo luogo, perché San Paolo è un formatore di apo-stoli, nel senso che “le Lettere di San Paolo formano le anime e i cuori per l’apostolato, formano gli apostoli secondo il cuore di Gesù, forti, santi, fecondi, apostoli del proprio tempo” .
Perciò vogliamo fare come un’escursione nei contesti, nei contenuti e nelle strategie pastorali di Paolo, per dare maggiore vitalità alle nostre radici apostoliche paoline.
2. CONTESTO STORICO DELL’ EVANGELIZZAZIONE DI PAOLO
Paolo nel contesto della Chiesa Primitiva
La questione sulle origini del cristianesimo è strettamente unita alla posizione circa la sua verità, la sua identità e la sua diversità. Conosciamo, nonostante la relativa abbon-danza di documenti, poche cose sui suoi inizi e sui primi sviluppi come comunità, e sulla vita dei primi membri delle stessa comunità. Rahner unisce l’idea di inizio con l’essenza del cristianesimo. Egli afferma:
La Chiesa Apostolica è un modo qualitativamente unico, oggetto di intervento divino. Svolge una funzione unica e insostituibile in tutto il resto della storia della Chiesa. L’inizio deve usufruire di una originalità, di una irriducibilità e di una purezza nell’espressione della sua propria essenza che sono solamente proprie di questa prima fa-se. La Chiesa Apostolica non è solamente il primo periodo della Chiesa nel tempo, ma anche il fondamento permanente e la norma per tutto il futuro .
Quindi, per Froncois Voiga, “la storia del cristianesimo primitivo, la complessità della sua evoluzione, non si deve ridurre a nessun sistema semplice”, perché è difficile situa-re la quantità di elementi che implicò l’articolazione di questa nuova esperienza di Fede in Cristo.
Nella storia del cristianesimo primitivo si constata una molteplicità di fenomeni e di correnti non facili da situare, stabilendo la relazione tra gli uni e gli altri. Si può parlare di pluralità nelle origini del cristianesimo primitivo. A titolo di esempio, si può citare la predicazione itinerante, chiamata anche radicalismo itinerante, rabbinismo cristiano del cristianesimo giudaico, tradizione sapienziale, scuola del discepolo amato. Negli anni trenta e quaranta dei primi sviluppi dell’era cristiana, i “missionari sono itineran-ti”. A loro volta, essi operano in Galilea e in Siria, particolarmente tra i giudei. La cre-scita geografica e numerica li obbliga a creare nuove forme di organizzazione, a sce-gliere nuovi animatori e missionari (At 6,2-6). Questo comportò direttamente una rilet-tura della Scrittura giudaica con occhi nuovi.
Il gruppo, a cui appartiene Stefano, con influenza ellenista , interpreta, in modo diverso, la Bibbia. Le comunità elleniche si convertirono in base alla missione cristiana che si svolse posteriormente. Innanzitutto la conseguenza fu che quell’insieme di persone conquistò con la predicazione del Vangelo non solo i giudei, ma anche i gentili (Gal 2,11-14). A causa della struttura e della organizzazione propria della missione e di Pao-lo, il cristianesimo occidentale, durante gli anni quaranta - settanta, ebbe la tendenza a convertirsi in un movimento urbano della società ellenista e romana, favorito dalla mobilità delle persone nel grande Impero, dalle persecuzioni contro la comunità iniziale e il cambiamento della situazione politica, religiosa e culturale. In circa trenta anni, il Vangelo si estese in tutto l’Impero (At 1,8), attraverso i viaggi di Paolo e degli altri a-postoli. Senza dubbio, questo sviluppo generò una radicalizzazione del conflitto con i “fratelli” di Gerusalemme. Paolo e Barnaba, seguaci della linea ellenista, vanno a cerca-re nuovi orizzonti missionari (At 9,29-30), in cui svilupperanno un modello di Chiesa differente da quello che si stava vivendo in Gerusalemme, guidato da Pietro, con strut-ture dedotte dalla tradizione giudaica sebbene in comunione con i nuovi elementi as-sunti dall’esperienza di fede in Gesù.
Paolo nel contesto del mondo Romano
I viaggi di Paolo furono compiuti tra gli anni 46 e 58. Durante tutto questo tempo, il governo centrale dell’Impero continuava il suo sforzo per concentrare il potere e la ric-chezza in Roma. Inoltre, cercava di conservare la cosiddetta “Pax Romana”, che favori-va il commercio internazionale, la riscossione delle imposte e dei tributi. In questa pro-spettiva, aumentava la schiavitù nelle periferie e il lusso nel centro, con un conseguente rilassamento dei costumi. Per garantire la “Pax Romana”, l’Impero introdusse il culto obbligatorio per l’Imperatore.
Il cristianesimo paolino e l’ideologia dell’imperialismo romano si trovano in un conflit-to radicale di senso. La teologia imperiale romana è il centro ideologico del potere as-sunto dall’imperatore. Il nome di Augusto, come dei suoi successori, è caratterizzato come figlio degli dei, dio e dio degli dei. È il signore e redentore del mondo. Il termine Kirios, “signore”, indica sempre l’imperatore. Queste “verità” si trovano dovunque, come la pubblicità e la propaganda di oggi. I romani credono che il successo di Roma nelle guerre e nelle conquiste sia dovuto alla sua moralità e alla sua pratica religiosa (“pietas” e “religio”).
Senza esaminare l’archeologia della teologia imperiale romana, è difficile comprendere l’esegesi della teologia cristiana paolina e i suoi metodi pastorali. L’Impero Romano, per esempio, si è basato sul principio comune della pace attraverso la vittoria. Paolo, seguace di Cristo Gesù, si trova in opposizione frontale con questa teologia. Da parte sua, egli afferma che il Regno di Dio è già presente nel mondo, proponendo la pace attraverso la giustizia o, più chiaramente, attraverso la fede, nell’alleanza con il Dio vivo e vero (1Ts 1,9) e in suo Figlio, morto e risorto, Gesù Cristo.
Da questo si deducono le stesse parole “Grazia e Pace” da Dio nostro Padre e dal Si-gnore Gesù Cristo, presenti nel saluto iniziale delle Lettere di Paolo, che riassumono il suo messaggio e la sua missione, la sua fede e la sua teologia, che sono più sovversive di quanto ognuno possa immaginare.
Occorre chiarire come la parola greca Ekklesia, che Paolo utilizza per indicare la co-munità cristiana, era utilizzata, originariamente, per indicare i cittadini di qualsiasi città greca, riuniti in assemblea, e che potevano prendere decisioni chiare e determinanti sull’autogoverno.
Il contenuto della predicazione di Paolo, richiama l’attenzione dei romani, risvegliando qualche sospetto. I cristiani proclamando Gesù come Figlio di Dio intenderebbero ne-gare deliberatamente Cesare con il suo titolo e annunciare Gesù, come Signore e Salva-tore; ciò implicherebbe tradire direttamente l’Imperatore, profetizzando chiaramente secoli di martirio .
Il cristianesimo apparve come un fenomeno irrazionale all’élite e ai filosofi, al punto di squalificarlo e trattarlo come una superstizione, essendo una religione nuova nell’impero romano, straniera, senza una tradizione riconosciuta, oscurantista. Il para-dosso è che lo stesso motivo di dispregio del cristianesimo tra gli intellettuali, si tra-sformò in motivo di successo negli ambienti sociali rappresentativi del popolo dentro le città, cioè, entrò in maniera diretta negli ambienti più popolari dell’impero. I temi della predicazione presentavano, da una parte, il monoteismo esclusivista e, dall’altra, un’etica rigorosa sulla quale era possibile costruire coscienze individuali e l’identità personale come essere umano.
Da un punto di vista storico e contingente, il nuovo movimento cristiano apparve in un momento in cui, effettivamente, poteva rispondere alla ricerca di identità personale e sociale di ampi circoli dell’impero romano. Le religioni misteriche e gli dei non offri-vano più elementi soddisfacenti all’esistenza umana. Il trionfo del cristianesimo si deve alla sua struttura in cui si esprimeva il suo sistema di convinzioni, aperto ai giudei e ai greci, agli schiavi e ai liberi, agli uomini e alle donne, senza porre condizioni previe .
Non è stato facile a Gesù di Nazareth predicare nel mondo romano, condizionato dal potere dell’impero, rappresentato, in Palestina, da Ponzio Pilato. La lista dei martiri dei primi secoli rafforza questa informazione . Lo stesso Paolo, secondo la tradizione, è stato decapitato con la spada imperiale, durante il regno di Nerone (anno 54-68).
Paolo nel contesto giudaico
L’influenza del giudaismo sui popoli di altra provenienza, nell’Impero Romano, fu pro-fonda e duratura. Dimostrava un tremendo vigore attraverso la diffusione del Talmud, conquistando proseliti e simpatizzanti. Da una parte, la esclusività del culto giudaico e il rigore delle sue leggi generava una barriera tra giudei e gentili. Dall’altra, vi era qual-cosa nella religione e nelle comunità giudaiche che soddisfaceva le necessità esistenzia-li basilari all’interno dell’Impero Romano e anche al di fuori di esso .
Intorno al secolo III, il giudaismo era diventato la religione più popolare tra i pagani. Perciò era un potente rivale del cristianesimo. Questo ci aiuta a capire le tensioni tra la Chiesa primitiva e le Sinagoghe giudaiche nei primi secoli del cristianesimo .
Il periodo delle origini del cristianesimo ha un carattere “problematico”. L’idea di una tradizione apostolica unitaria è inadeguata per la diversità di elementi presenti nelle sue origini. Le comunità giudeocristiane si svilupparono nelle sinagoghe fino al termine del secolo I. La relazione del cristianesimo con le sinagoghe originò conflitti violenti, par-ticolarmente negli anni 40 d.C. Paolo stesso ci informa sulle prime persecuzioni ai cri-stiani da parte delle sinagoghe (Gal 1,13.23; Fil 3,6). I farisei avevano deciso di esclu-dere dalla sinagoga coloro che confessavano Gesù (Gv 9,22; 12,42; 16,2a). Paolo, per questo, fu più volte castigato nelle sinagoghe (2Cor 11,24-25), esattamente per le stesse ragioni per cui aveva perseguitato i cristiani della regione (Gal 1,13.23). Nelle città ellenistiche e romane, il cristianesimo si trasformò in un rivale del giudaismo, dopo essersi diffuso nelle sinagoghe e attraverso la loro rete .
La rottura radicale di Paolo con il suo passato giudaico, dopo l’evento della conversio-ne, l’abbandono della legge mosaica, l’osservanza rigorosa dei suoi precetti, la predica-zione della non necessaria circoncisione per la salvezza, coltivarono l’inimicizia dei suoi antichi fratelli di fede. Paolo nelle sue lettere menziona sofferenze, opposizioni e ingiurie di alcuni giudei (1Ts 1,6; 2,2): “gli impedirono di predicare ai gentili” (2,16). L’assemblea celebrata in Gerusalemme (verso il 48 d.C.), dimostra però che l’unità minacciata non giunse a rompersi. Senza dubbio costituisce, nello stesso tempo, la linea divisoria di varie correnti. Fino al momento dell’assemblea tutto gira intorno alla co-munità di Gerusalemme e alle sue figure più rappresentative, soprattutto a Pietro. A partire da questo momento, tutti “spariscono” oltre l’orizzonte e Paolo entra in azione, diventando con la sua opera l’evento principale della Chiesa primitiva.
3. CONTENNUTO DELLA PREDICAZIONE DI PAOLO
La chiave ermeneutica di Paolo
Paolo applica alla lettura e interpretazione delle Scritture una nuova chiave ermeneutica basata sul mistero di Cristo, convinto che in Gesù, il Figlio di Dio, tutte le promesse fatte nella prima alleanza hanno compimento (2Cor 1,19-20). In questo orizzonte di fede cristologica, gli avvenimenti e i personaggi della scrittura ebraica, si convertono in figure che anticipano l’esperienza cristiana .
Nella lettura cristologica della Bibbia, Paolo dipende dalla tradizione cristiana primitiva presente nelle prime comunità. In esse i fondamenti essenziali dell’annuncio della fede si associano alla testimonianza profetica della Scrittura: “Cristo morì per i nostri pec-cati, secondo le Scritture (…) resuscitò il terzo giorno, secondo le Scritture” (1Cor 15,3.4) . In questa prospettiva, egli sottolinea la continuità dell’azione di Dio nella storia della salvezza, che giunge al suo compimento in Cristo Gesù.
La missione evangelizzatrice in Paolo, è la condizione fondamentale per vivere e testi-moniare l’azione salvifica di Cristo, morto e risorto. Perciò egli poteva affermare con vigore: “Annunciare il Vangelo non è un titolo di gloria per me. È una necessità che si impone. Guai a me se non evangelizzo (1 Cor 9,16)”.
Il Vangelo di Paolo
Un frammento basilare ci rivela la radice del Vangelo predicato da Paolo: “Vi rendo noto, fratelli, il vangelo che vi ho annunziato e che voi avete ricevuto, nel quale restate saldi, e dal quale anche ricevete la salvezza, se lo mantenete in quella forma in cui ve l'ho annunziato. Altrimenti, avreste creduto invano (1Co 15,1-2)”.
Secondo questo testo di Paolo, il Vangelo salva. In Galati (1,8-18), “Evangelo” signifi-ca per Paolo l’“Apocalisse”, cioè, la “Rivelazione” di Gesù Cristo nella sua vita. In greco, si dice “Apocalipsis” di Gesù, il cui significato è il modo in cui Cristo vive in me. Apocalisse, in questo senso, è la manifestazione, in altre parole, far scorrere la ten-da o togliere il velo per osservare direttamente la realtà – disvelamento –. Paolo, come giudeo, credeva nelle opere e nella legge. Ora, egli ha l’esperienza di Gesù Cristo. Con questa evangelizza, come dichiara ai Galati:
“Vi dichiaro dunque, fratelli, che il vangelo da me annunziato non è modellato sull'uomo; infatti io non l'ho ricevuto né l'ho imparato da uomini, ma per rivela-zione (apocalisse) di Gesù Cristo. (Gal 1,11). Quando colui che mi scelse fin dal seno di mia madre e mi chiamò con la sua grazia si compiacque di rivelare (apo-calisse) a me suo Figlio perché lo annunziassi in mezzo ai pagani, (Gal 1,15-16).
Vi ho trasmesso (tradizione) dunque, anzitutto, quello che anch'io ho ricevuto: che cioè Cristo morì per i nostri peccati secondo le Scritture, fu sepolto ed è risu-scitato il terzo giorno secondo le Scritture” (1Cor 15,3-4).
D’accordo con questo testo, Paolo non inventò il Vangelo. Al contrario, lo ricevette, a sua volta, dalla comunità, in modo integro, agli inizi degli anni 30 d.C., quando ebbe la “Apocalisse” del Risorto e nel momento in cui sperimentò la salvezza, quando si in-contrò con Cristo sulla strada di Damasco. Questa chiarezza di Paolo, appare anche nella Lettera ai Romani: “Non mi vergogno del vangelo; perché esso è potenza di Dio per la salvezza di chiunque crede; del Giudeo prima e poi del Greco” (Rm 1, 16).
Che cosa fa il Risorto in una persona? Paolo rispose a questa domanda, riferendosi alla sua esistenza e a partire dalle situazioni della vita quotidiana. Chi fa spazio al Risorto, diventa “Vangelo”, testimone e buona notizia per gli altri. Nel Vangelo, si trova una forza intrinseca (dynamys, enérgeia), che proviene dallo Spirito, e che è capace di pene-trare nel cuore dell’uomo e di trasformarlo. Innanzitutto ha come conseguenza il cam-biamento della scala personale dei valori.
Paolo, assumendo la forza del Vangelo nella sua vita, supera le opere della Torá, che pongono in primo piano lo sforzo personale, le proprie capacità. Valorizza, dalla sua prospettiva il proprio io. Per chi è in Cristo, l’importanza è orientata verso gli altri. Av-viene una conversione, rappresentata con il termine greco “metanoia”, che alla lettera si traduce: cambio di mente e una mente in continuo cambiamento.
La conversione di una persona per Paolo è uguale, identica, somigliante, all’evento del-la morte e risurrezione di Gesù che si rinnova. Quando in una persona avviene questo, Gesù crocifisso-risorto lo trasforma in un individuo simile a Lui. Paolo, in vari passi delle sue lettere, nomina questo processo di “vita battesimale” intesa come un immer-gersi nella morte e resurrezione di Cristo per entrare in una nuova condizione, e porre le proprie qualità al servizio degli altri .
Quindi, il Vangelo non è una ideologia, ma un modo di essere. Paolo sa che, dopo l’interiorizzazione di questa parola vitale, deve trasmetterla con la sua stessa vita, “in una situazione concreta”. In una parola, non c’è comunicazione del Vangelo senza un coinvolgimento personale di chi lo diffonde. Lo trasforma in vita, lo irradia vitalmente (2Cor 4,6.16). Si deduce che il Vangelo si comunica anche con l’esempio e con la te-stimonianza della vita. Ciò implica che non solo si interiorizzi la parola, ma si renda vitale trasformandola in opere, che possano entrare nel mondo per trasformarlo.
Il Kerigma di Paolo
Il termine “kerygma” usato da Paolo richiama l’attenzione riguardo al verbo con cui si può relazionare, poiché in greco, “kêrýssein” (annunciare, testimoniare), hanno la stes-sa radice di “kerygma” (annuncio, segno festivo e allegro, testimonianza degna di fe-de) .
Si può quindi dedurre che Kerigma, in greco kerysso, significa predicare. Perciò, questo vocabolo designa la proclamazione apostolica dei primi tempi del cristianesimo, quan-do i discepoli si lanciarono per far conoscere il loro nuovo modo di vivere, segnato dall’incontro con il Risorto. Il nucleo della loro predicazione non poteva essere più semplice: Gesù è risorto! L’unico dogma cherigmatico era l’evento salvifico di Gesù (1Cor 15,14.1). Su di lui si fondava la fede .
La pratica della proclamazione aveva come finalità interpellare, invitare alla conversio-ne, cioè, assumere non solo l’annuncio come tale, ma la persona di Gesù come Signore. In questo senso, confronta l’uomo con una realtà, con un avvenimento perenne e tra-scendentale. Inoltre, lo invita ad accettare il Kerigma come un atto di fede, che produce salvezza. Da questa prospettiva, si contagiava la gente con la fede vissuta e testimonia-ta. Tutto ciò si sosteneva sulla fede in Gesù vivo, “seduto alla destra di Dio”, e presen-te in mezzo a loro con il suo Spirito.
Chi enunciava parlava nel nome di Dio, come i profeti, poiché non solo faceva cono-scere alcuni elementi del mistero della redenzione, ma mirava a far sì che gli uomini e la stessa società potesse cambiare molti dei suoi comportamenti. La sua parola diventa-va efficace: quando veniva accolta produceva la salvezza annunciata dalla resurrezione di Gesù, cioè, la persona – l’anima dell’uomo – veniva trasformata, dall’azione di Dio. Questa è la missione di chi decide di annunciare la parola (Rm 6,3-11). Il Kerigma in-cludeva l’interpretazione del significato dell’avvenimento - Gesù Cristo sia in se stesso come nell’uomo.
Per Paolo, il Kerigma non è solo il contenuto del primo annuncio – Morte e Resurre-zione di Gesù –, ma anche il metodo pastorale di farlo conoscere. Annuncio che per il suo valore e importanza deve provocare un grande impatto morale, portando la persona alla conversione e all’adesione piena a Gesù Cristo.
Il Kerigma preparava la strada per una formazione progressiva, dettagliata, unita e or-dinata, attraverso la catechesi (Didaché, Catequesis o Didascalia). Seguiva queste fasi: conversione, battesimo e iniziazione ad una vita cristiana coerente. La conseguenza di questi elementi portava ad una rottura con il passato, per incominciare una nuova vita. La nuova fede, da questa posizione, portava ad una nuova comprensione della vita e dell’uomo.
Quindi, i destinatari del Kerigma erano tutti, ma con speciale enfasi i neofiti e i simpa-tizzanti del cristianesimo . Però, per circostanze storiche, la proclamazione della buona novella ebbe la possibilità di estendersi nel mondo gentile-pagano, la cui mentalità e concezione della realtà era completamente differente. Per lo sviluppo di questo compi-to, era necessario adattare il linguaggio, perché la trasmissione della buona notizia fosse comprensibile alle altre culture, come, la greco-romana (ellenistica). Un esponente di questa nuova modalità di proclamare la buona notizia fu Paolo . Occorre chiarire come questa espansione del Kerigma ha avuto come implicazione diretta una sua evoluzione più solida.
Le esortazioni di Paolo
Paolo sa usare l’arte dell’esortazione per muovere all’azione, sa scoprire i punti chiave, coerenti con la dottrina che va esponendo, per portare le persone a comportarsi in modo diverso. Io “vi esorto” significa, guardando la linea della sua riflessione, infondere co-raggio, confortare. Questa espressione ha lo scopo di suscitare i meccanismi stimolatori del cambiamento di vita. Cioè, presenta il modo di “vivere nel Signore” (Cf. Fil 4,8). L’obbedienza e l’impegno sono la risposta a questi annunci (Rm 12,1-2). In altre parole, le esortazioni paoline, nel loro carattere spirituale, suscitano una vita coerente con ciò che Dio vuole. L’orizzonte dell’esortazione è la misericordia di Dio, per un amore di adesione a Lui.
4. PRINCIPI E STRATREGIE PASTORALI DI PAOLO
Paolo non si è mai dichiarato pastore di nessuna delle comunità particolari da lui fonda-te, ma si considerò apostolo (Cf. Rm 1,5), animandole, accompagnandole e comunican-do loro la vita divina con l’annuncio del Vangelo e la dedizione della sua vita. Però, una analisi più dettagliata delle sue lettere ce lo mostra come pastore preoccupato di istruire e guidare le sue comunità. La pastorale di Paolo si trasforma in uno stile di vita “nel Signore” (Cf. Fil 4,8; Col 3,17; 1Cor 7,39), che si convertirà in un servizio di uni-tà, di comunione e missione ecclesiale.
La missione di Paolo tra i gentili si presenta come un’impresa missionaria organizzata. Il suo impegno è di portare il Vangelo là dove il nome di Cristo non è ancora conosciu-to (Rm 15,20). Gli obiettivi principali delle sue strategie sono quelli di creare comunità nei centri urbani, coinvolgere un gran numero di collaboratori e istruire attraverso le sue lettere.

L’incontro dei credenti come “Corpo di Cristo” nella casa – nella famiglia
Come nella sinagoga, Paolo, fu uno dei primi a considerare la casa-famiglia come parte della sua strategia missionaria , formando nuove comunità cristiane, vive nella fede . La casa era il luogo per eccellenza di incontro delle comunità cristiane. Assunsero un’importanza decisiva nell’evoluzione del cristianesimo ellenistico, poiché si costitui-rono in unità sociali che, successivamente, si convertirono in blocco al Vangelo. Di-vennero cellule nella fede, nella realtà quotidiana della vita, come si può dedurre dalla stessa lista di saluti di Paolo. La casa era il luogo dell’annuncio e dell’ascolto della Parola. In essa i cristiani condividevano la cena del Signore nella frazione del pane, nella preghiera, nell’istruzione e nell’alimento corporale.
Il principio pastorale che orientò Paolo nella sua attività evangelizzatrice era quello del lievito: “non sapete che un poco di lievito fermenta tutta la massa?” (1Cor 5,6). Egli credeva che era necessario diffondere in tutto l’impero romano la Parola con il suo po-tere trasformante, attraverso piccole cellule vive che si costituivano in comunità di fede. E furono il risultato di un processo di inculturazione significativo e di un senso comuni-tario della pastorale.
L’organizzazione delle Chiese nelle città elleniche e romane non si può attribuire chia-ramente a Paolo, perché non è una sua invenzione. Queste strutture esistevano già per gli incontri sociali delle famiglie e furono adottate da Paolo all’interno delle sue strate-gie di evangelizzazione.
La Chiesa come corpo di Cristo, di cui è il Capo dal quale deriva la vitalità e la fecondi-tà di ognuno dei suoi membri (2Cor 12,12-26; Ef 1,22-23; Col 1, 18-20), costituisce la base pastorale del ministero di Paolo. A riguardo, egli dice: attraverso Cristo Capo “tut-to il corpo ben fornito e congiunto insieme mediante le giunture e i legamenti, progre-disce nella crescita voluta da Dio” (Col 2,19; Ef 4,15-16), senza dimenticare il dono dello Spirito, mediante il Battesimo e l’Eucaristia (1Cor 12,13). La comunità, da una parte, è un corpo, un organismo vivo, che trasmette vita e, dall’altra, non si tratta di struttura, sistema o impalcatura, ma rappresenta il Corpo di Cristo.
In questo modello, “la Chiesa è comunità intorno alla mensa del Signore”, perché si ritrova unita dal pane, che rappresenta il modo in cui tutti i battezzati sono convocati per partecipare al “corpo di Cristo”. È costituita in una comunità di servizio e di vita derivante dall’Eucaristia, che le attribuisce in questo modo, attraverso l’evento cristia-no, una struttura sociale (1Cor 12,12-27) .
Alcune difficoltà e sfide, a volte le più gravi, nella proclamazione della parola alle co-munità, sono quelle incontrate da Paolo all’interno dei gruppi già esistenti. Egli parla di predicatori che per invidia insegnano senza onestà (Fil 1,16-18); pretendono di imporre le pratiche giudaiche ai nuovi cristiani. Inoltre parla di divisioni interne (1Cor 1,10-13), di persone carismatiche esaltate (1Cor 12,1-3) che presentano la cena del Signore come occasione per escludere i più poveri (1Cor 11,27-22). Nelle comunità della Galazia discreditano la predicazione di Paolo, perché non esige la circoncisione dai gentili e, ancora meno, l’osservanza delle leggi giudaiche (Gal 4,21; 5,4). Tutto ciò fu l’inizio di un allontanamento etico e religioso delle comunità (1Cor 5,1).
Sorge un interrogativo: quale la reazione di Paolo? Questo fu una delle sofferenze più grandi dell’apostolo. Da una parte è duro, persino sarcastico, con questi personaggi (2Cor 11,5); dall’altra reagisce con sapienza usando la sua abilità di pedagogo e pasto-re. Quasi tutte le sue lettere mirano a sostenere, chiarire, e formare le comunità.
Paolo evangelizzatore delle città
Oggi si ammette che il cristianesimo fu un fenomeno urbano ai suoi inizi in Palestina , dato che Paolo e i suoi collaboratori si sono diretti alle grandi città situate sulle princi-pali vie di comunicazione dell’epoca . Essi furono gli iniziatori dell’evangelizzazione dei popoli principali, perché ebbero la possibilità di fondare tra di loro le comunità della nuova fede . Così la fede cristiana si aprì ai membri delle città del mondo, senza che fossero necessariamente parte del popolo d’Israele.
Nuovi ed eterogenei gruppi di cristiani adottarono modi e luoghi di vivere l’esperienza particolare che si faceva conoscere. Nelle città della conca del mediterraneo si trovava-no persone di diverse culture e condizioni sociali (liberi e schiavi). Inoltre c’erano quar-tieri formatisi per affinità etniche e lavorative: Paolo, senza dubbio, cercava il “quartie-re dei tessitori di tende”, con cui si poneva al lavoro. Il tempo libero lo dedicava all’apostolato (1Ts 2,9; 1Cor 4,12; 9,1-24; At 19,11-12).
Il lavoro missionario collegiale
L’organizzazione apostolica di Paolo coinvolge numerosi collaboratori, che lavorano con lui (1Cor 3,9; Fil 2,25) e predicano il vangelo (1Cor 16,16; 1Ts 3,2), seguendo il mandato divino (1Cor 3,9; 1Tmt 3,2).
Paolo con il suo ministero pone le basi dell’azione pastorale della Chiesa. Le sue lettere dimostrano che non è mai stato un lavoratore solitario, ma sempre conciliò il suo lavoro missionario con l’esigenza collegiale, per cui i suoi collaboratori erano corresponsabili sia della fondazione delle comunità come del mantenimento dei contatti attraverso le lettere.
Aveva tre gruppi di collaboratori:
1. Gli inviati dalla Chiesa: sono presenti nelle comunità, a disposizione della missione paolina con compiti definiti e limitati, come portare le lettere, trasmettere notizie, aiuta-re gli altri apostoli.
2. I collaboratori regolari: cioè un ristretto gruppo come Barnaba, Silvano, Timoteo, che hanno appoggiato intimamente la missione di Paolo e le sue fondazioni.
3. Collaboratori indipendenti: Paolo incontrò, più o meno per caso, un gruppo di uomi-ni, che, per un certo tempo, hanno collaborato nelle comunità paoline. Tra questi ci sono Priscilla e Aquila.
Le sue stesse lettere testimoniano l’impegno di “socializzazione della missione paoli-na” e i risultati delle comunità derivate, che segnalano la grande attività dei collabo-ratori, tra cui numerose donne. Le case-famiglia e i loro padroni si avvicendavano nel sostenere non solo ciò che riguardava l’attività dell’apostolo, ma anche i membri delle altre comunità che passavano per quei luoghi .
Le lettere, strategia di comunicazione apostolica di Paolo
Le lettere apostoliche, scritte da Paolo per le sue comunità, sono il primo tentativo di pensare e rappresentare la fede cristiana come comprensione di se stessa e come siste-ma di convinzioni razionali e coerenti, perché esprime il senso profondo dell’esperienza manifestata da chi ha già accolto la fede. Paolo richiedeva, come impegno pastorale, che le sue lettere fossero lette nelle riunioni di tutti i credenti (1Ts 3,2-6) e che fossero inviate alle altre comunità. Egli le scrive insieme ai suoi compagni di missione.
Le lettere di Paolo non hanno soltanto l’intento di risolvere problemi sorti nelle comu-nità, ma sono parte della strategia di comunicazione apostolica, intesa come modalità per mantenere un dialogo capace di ampliare l’interpretazione dell’annuncio di Cristo. Considerata sotto l’aspetto della composizione, la comunicazione epistolare implica, da parte dell’autore o del mittente, un impegno personale e uno sforzo di sincerità che altre forme di scrittura non esigono allo stesso modo, perché fa conoscere l’esperienza per-sonale e la comprensione del mondo. Considerata dal punto di vista del recettore, la lettera ha un peso e un’efficacia diversa di una conversazione o di una conferenza pro-nunciata davanti a un uditorio, dovuta al fatto che si può rileggerla, interpretare e con-servare per il futuro. Le lettere di Paolo si trasformarono in una specie di autorità apo-stolica e in un genere letterario per eccellenza proprio dell’epoca apostolica .
5. L’ ESPERIENZA DI PAOLO NEL CARISMA DI ALBERIONE
Don Alberione avverte la presenza di “tempi nuovi” durante il periodo della sua for-mazione. Nato il 4 aprile del 1884, in San Lorenzo di Fossano, Piemonte, Italia, ha avu-to la sorte di vivere in un ambiente culturale elevato e di contare su maestri dotti e sa-pienti. Egli era dotato di una intelligenza profonda, originale, intuitiva, amante del pen-siero e della riflessione .
Da giovane seminarista, mentre si trovava nella cattedrale del Duomo di Alba, durante la notte di passaggio al nuovo secolo, 1900-1901, avvenne l’intervento del Signore. In un lungo tempo di preghiera visse l’esperienza di Cristo nell’Eucaristia espressa nelle parole di Paolo: “Mi ha amato e ha dato sé stesso per me” (Gal 2,20). Sentì allora la responsabilità della chiamata “Venite tutti a me” (Mt 11,28). In questa luce comprese le realtà ecclesiali e sociali del suo tempo. Il Maestro gli aprì la mente e il cuore alla sfida di una missione speciale nel nuovo secolo: essere apostoli di oggi, usando i mezzi di oggi. E si sentì obbligato a prepararsi per servire la Chiesa e gli uomini del nuovo seco-lo, lavorando in comunità (Cf. AD 15.20). L’esperienza di questa grande luce irradiata dal Maestro (Cf. AD 153), Cristo risorto, la stessa che orientò Paolo (Cf. AD 159), è stata la radice del carisma paolino, che si fa concreto nella Famiglia Paolina.
A questo punto ci domandiamo. Quali sono le idee determinanti di san Paolo che influi-rono successivamente nella definizione del carisma paolino plasmato da Don Alberio-ne? Sia in Alberione che in Paolo troviamo due dinamiche convergenti. Innanzitutto Don Alberione aspirava a formare apostoli, secondo le esigenze dei tempi nuovi. Per questo compito egli cerca di dare vita ad una profonda relazione dei giovani con San Paolo, al fine di suscitare amore ed entusiasmo per un apostolato vivo della buona stampa come mezzo e opera di evangelizzazione. Inoltre, l’Alberione, come strumento di Dio, sente il dovere di dar vita, identità e sviluppo a una istituzione che possa arriva-re apostolicamente a tutti con una nuova forma di predicazione nella Chiesa. Per questo si ispirò all’impulso missionario e organizzativo di Paolo, avendo trovato in lui, nello studio e meditazione della lettera ai Romani, il vero senso dell’apostolo. Di conseguen-za, tutto ciò che è possibile dedicare a un tale compito si può imparare da San Paolo (Cf. AD 64).
Don Alberione è profondamente persuaso che San Paolo ha partecipato nel costituire e dare identità alla Famiglia Paolina: “Tutti devono guardare a San Paolo apostolo come unico padre, maestro, modello e fondatore: Perché lo è di fatto. Per lui è nata la Fami-glia Paolina, da lui fu alimentata e cresciuta, da lui ha preso lo spirito” (AD 2).
Inoltre, egli ha formato i membri della Famiglia Paolina a vivere nello “spirito paoli-no”, che sgorga dalla vita, dalle lettere e dall’apostolato di san Paolo . Questo spirito deve impregnare e caratterizzare la vita della “Casa”, cioè di tutta la sua opera. Don Alberione per questo adottò il nome di Società San Paolo. Dobbiamo ricordare che la prima casa e la cappella furono chiamate così. Lo stesso nome fu dato alla chiesa in costruzione , perché in essa è contenuta la spiritualità paolina e da essa partono i nuovi missionari e missionarie verso i paesi di missione .
6. L’ESPERIENZA DI FEDE E I CONTENUTI DELLA MISSIONE
DEI PAOLINI E DELLE PAOLINE OGGI
Nuovi contesti e nuove necessità pastorali
All’inizio del nuovo millennio, il Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha presentato una nuova sfi-da: “prendere il largo”. E ci ha esortati a dare nuovo slancio al nostro impegno spiri-tuale e pastorale (NMI, 1) e a dedicarci con impegno all’appassionante compito della rinascita pastorale (NMI, 29). Questo dinamismo, ci ricorda il Papa, non deriverà da metodi sofisticati, e neppure dal moltiplicarsi di attività e piani ben elaborati con una tecnica ampia e fortemente impegnativa, ma dalla forza e dall’azione dello Spirito unito all’esperienza del Dio di Gesù Cristo nella vita spirituale degli agenti di pastorale.
Alberione, già nel 1926, affermava: “il mondo ha bisogno di una nuova, ampia e pro-fonda evangelizzazione” . Ciò perché lui conosceva i cambiamenti e le sfide della real-tà socio-ecclesiale, e aveva percepito che la stampa poteva offrire un nuovo modo di arrivare alle persone, conforme all’invito di Cristo: “Venite tutti a me” (Mt 11,28). Per-ciò egli elabora un progetto pastorale, che comprende contenuti teologici e politiche operative per “una nuova evangelizzazione (…), radicati in Cristo Via, Verità e Vita, come membra vive e operanti nella Chiesa, sull’esempio di Paolo”.
L’evangelizzazione svolta dai Paolini e Paoline si integra nella missione della Chiesa, poiché è vissuta come dono ricevuto che si trasforma in dono condiviso con gli altri. Questa condivisione si attua con la comunicazione. Così l’insieme della nostra produ-zione apostolica editoriale multimediale deve orientarsi a generare qualità nella nostra fede personale e comunitaria. Si sostiene che l’esperienza di fede qualifica il carisma paolino, come ha fatto San Paolo con la sua missione. Occorre chiarire che la fede è stata intesa come accoglienza di una rivelazione personale: “Colui che mi separò dal seno di mia madre e mi chiamò con la sua grazia, ha voluto rivelare in me il suo figlio, perché lo annunciassi ai gentili” (Gal 1,15-16) .
Si intende per evangelizzazione l’annuncio della buona notizia del Regno e dell’amore del Padre, manifestato in Cristo morto e risorto, per la salvezza degli uomini. Possiamo dire che evangelizzazione e pastorale non sono la stessa cosa. Però si esigono e comple-tano reciprocamente; l’evangelizzazione è il compito che si cerca di realizzare, mentre la pastorale è il modo di concretizzarlo. Infatti, le radici del carisma paolino sono di carattere biblico-teologico: cioè il carisma paolino assume la missione come espressa da Gesù nel Vangelo (Mt 11,28), ma la sua realizzazione è di carattere pastorale, in quanto cerca di raggiungere tutte le persone e comunità, come Paolo, con linguaggi e mezzi che essi possano comprendere .
Il documento di Aparecida colloca l’evangelizzazione nella complessa realtà dell’attualità, per cui possiamo contemplare nel “volto dolente e glorioso” di Cristo, il volto umiliato di molti uomini e donne dei nostri popoli e, insieme, la loro vocazione alla libertà di figli di Dio, alla piena realizzazione della loro dignità personale e alla fraternità con tutti (DA, 31). L’evangelizzazione è storica, perciò esiste soltanto quando è incarnata nella storia, ed è segnata dai diversi fattori che formano la sua identità spe-cifica in ogni tempo e luogo.
Basandoci sull’ecclesiologia del Vaticano II, soprattutto sul “Mistero di Gesù”, “fon-damento assoluto di ogni pastorale” (NMI, 15), possiamo affermare che la pastorale “è il ministero della Chiesa, Popolo di Dio, che sotto l’impulso dello Spirito Santo, realizza la prassi evangelizzatrice di Gesù, per l’edificazione di se stessa e l’estensione del Regno di Dio nel mondo” .
7. I CONTENUTI DELL’EDITRICE MULTIMEDIALE INTERNAZIONALE PAO-LINA
Nuove aree culturali e nuovi areopaghi
Nel pensare e realizzare i contenuti dell’Evangelizzazione con la comunicazione oggi, noi Paolini e Paoline siamo chiamati a contemplare il contesto storico e la realtà attuale “con gli occhi della fede e della ragione” , per discernere e delineare gli aspetti pasto-rali dei contenuti e delle forme della nostra comunicazione evangelizzatrice.
Il Papa Giovanni Paolo II, riconosceva che i rapidi e profondi cambiamenti che caratte-rizzano il mondo attuale influiscono grandemente sull’azione missionaria. “(…) Ap-paiono nuove aree culturali o areopaghi moderni. Il primo areopago è il mondo della comunicazione, che sta unificando l’umanità trasformandola in un villaggio globale” (RM, 34-37). Benedetto XVI, va oltre quando afferma: “I nuovi media, la telefonia e internet, stanno modificando la fisionomia della comunicazione. Oggi la comunicazio-ne ha la pretesa non solo di rappresentare la realtà, ma di ‘creare’ gli stessi eventi” .
La rete, una delle più grandi invenzioni della storia recente, sta offrendo una straordina-ria opportunità per la diffusione della conoscenza, attraverso le tecnologie digitali. I destinatari stanno passando da recettori a realizzatori dei contenuti. Sta nascendo un nuovo soggetto, una nuova coscienza, un nuovo spirito di cooperazione e una nuova pratica comunicativa. In questo contesto, non esistono contenuti prioritari o privilegiati, poiché chi stabilisce la validità è il pubblico. La pratica comunicativa attuale pone l’interlocutore al centro della comunicazione. Questa nuova forma di comunicazione sfida i Paolini e le Paoline a inculturare diversamente il messaggio salvifico.
Il documento di Aparecida denuncia che “in generale nell’evangelizzazione, nella cate-chesi e in particolare nella pastorale persistono linguaggi poco significativi per la cul-tura attuale e in particolare per i giovani” (DA, 100 d). Inoltre, per questi cambiamen-ti, la realtà, in generale, è diventata per le persone sempre più opaca e complessa, gene-rando una crisi di senso, frustrazione e angustia (DA, 36).
Circa la situazione religiosa, non si può ignorare una preoccupazione: si cerca di co-struire una religione personale con frammenti di altre dottrine e di confezionare prati-che di religioni diverse. Si rifiuta, di appartenere a qualsiasi istituzione religiosa, rite-nendo le proprie convinzioni come parte di una “religione invisibile”, di una sfera pri-vata, con poca o nessuna pratica esteriore.
La novità di questi cambiamenti, a differenza di quelli già avvenuti in altri tempi, sta nel fatto che hanno un impatto globale e riguardano il mondo intero (DA, 34). In questo modo perturbano la vita dei nostri popoli, il senso religioso ed etico delle loro vite, la fede e l’esperienza di Dio (Cf. DA, 35).
Le domande potrebbero essere: In che modo la complessità del contesto attuale riguar-da e interpella la qualità dei nostri contenuti e delle nostre proposte di evangelizzazio-ne? Chi sono oggi i nostri destinatari? Quali sono le loro necessità esistenziali e spiri-tuali? Quali forme e linguaggi possono comprendere?
8. LA RADICE CARISMATICA DEI CONTENUTI DEL NOSTRO APO-STOLATO
La sensibilità pastorale di Alberione
Alberione, sensibile all’azione dello Spirito nella storia, percepiva la necessità di “nuo-vi apostoli” per i “tempi nuovi”. In altre parole, è indispensabile essere del nostro tem-po, usando i mezzi nuovi. L’uso dell’aggettivo “nuovo” rivela la misura con cui il Bea-to percepisce i cambiamenti storici. Alcune frasi ci mostrano la validità della visione pastorale di Alberione. Il cristianesimo non è un complesso di cerimonie, riti e pratiche esterne, ma è una nuova vita. Riguarda tutto l’uomo, lo integra, lo consacra (ATP, 81). Il cristianesimo è uno stile di vivere totalmente l’esperienza cristiana, assumendo i va-lori del Vangelo.
La predicazione che lo annuncia deve essere un atto comunicativo, cioè, che si tra-smette effettivamente. Qui sta il problema pastorale della nostra predicazione: l’annuncio deve portarci non a falsare la parola di Dio, ma a suscitare la capacità di ascoltare, assimilare e vivere l’attualità delle scritture (Cf. Eb 3,13.15; Lc 2,11; Mt 6,11; Dt 10,19).
Il paradigma alberioniano sul contenuto della nostra evangelizzazione
Nella prospettiva di Paolo, il paradigma di Alberione è costituito dalla parola tutto, par-ticolarmente, quando si riferisce agli interlocutori e ai contenuti della nostra missione: “Si deve portare tutto il Cristo all’uomo e dare tutto l’uomo a Dio, per Gesù Cristo” .
Analizziamo meglio quest’espressione:
– “Tutto il Cristo”: Alberione cerca nelle fonti genuine della vita e della spiritualità cristiana il contenuto globale delle nostre edizioni/produzioni: Sacra Scrittura e Litur-gia .
– “Tutto l’uomo a Dio, per Cristo”: Alberione intende la necessità che l’uomo viva in Cristo Gesù con tutto il suo essere e in tutto il suo essere .
– “Tutto a partire dalla Chiesa”: l’Alberione inserisce la nostra missione nella vita della Chiesa, colonna e fondamento di verità (Eb 3,10; 1Tm 3,15), per trasmettere, con garanzia di autenticità i contenuti evangelizzatori. La nostra azione apostolica ha ragio-ne di essere in quanto “in Cristo et in Ecclesia” (CISP, 179).
Gli orientamenti pastorali alberioniani nel contenuto e nella forma di evangelizza-zione
1° Dare in primo luogo la dottrina che salva con l’annuncio esplicito del mistero cri-stiano e la catechesi che fa crescere la fede in rapporto alla vita. Le si deve dare il pri-mato perché è la regola prossima della nostra fede.
2° Dare la Parola di Dio, poiché è il modello cui si deve ispirare lo scrittore apostolo. Inoltre è il libro che dobbiamo mostrare con le pellicole, la stampa, la radio, i dischi, i film e con tutti i mezzi che il Signore ci prepara .
3° Parlare di tutto cristianamente. Anche se la stampa si occupa di tutte le necessità, di tutte le opere e iniziative, deve includere la catechesi, la cultura, le scienze, l’educazione, la formazione, la legislazione , cioè, penetrare tutto il pensiero e il sapere umano di Vangelo (AD, 87).
Questo paradigma determina il senso dell’editoriale paolina. Pertanto si conclude che le linee e i progetti realizzati nella produzione (da una parte, libri, riviste, musica, pellico-le, programmi radio, interventi in televisione; e dall’altra, i programmi dei corsi e delle iniziative di animazione di carattere culturale, biblico, catechistico) devono trasmettere il messaggio della fede in forma esplicita e integrale a tutta la persona umana. Sotto questa luce occorre verificare se la nostra editrice è veramente paolina, cioè se si ispira a San Paolo. Perciò abbiamo bisogno di riferimenti espliciti e chiari che orientino tutti coloro che lavorano nelle diverse aree delle nostre editrici.
9. CRITERI DELLE NOSTRE LINEE EDITORIALI
1. La centralità della Parola di Dio oggi nella Chiesa
L’opera dell’Alberione si inserisce nella linea del movimento biblico della Chiesa degli inizi del secolo XX. Nel 1893, Leone XIII riaffermava l‘importanza della lettura e dello studio delle Sacre Scritture in tutta la Chiesa, con l’enciclica Providentissimus Deus. Sulla stessa linea sono rimasti i successori ai quali si ispirò l’insegnamento di Alberio-ne, raccomandando ai suoi figli e figlie: “È necessario che consideriamo un obbligo non lasciare mai la lettura della Bibbia (…). Quando il Vangelo è portato sempre con noi e è praticato, allora il progresso sarà evidente e l’istituto farà grandi passi, e noi adempiremo alla missione che Dio ci ha affidato nella Chiesa”.
A partire dal Vaticano II, si risvegliò nella Chiesa un interesse senza precedenti per la Bibbia e, specialmente per il Nuovo Testamento. La Bibbia ha cessato di essere un libro “velato” o di interesse per pochi, convertendosi in un testo di radicale importanza per tutti. Attualmente, la XII Assemblea ordinaria del Sinodo, sul tema: “La Parola di Dio nella vita e missione della Chiesa”, ha un rilievo eccezionale per la vita della Chiesa e dell’umanità. La XXXI Conferenza ordinaria di Aparecida in America Latina e nel Ca-raibe e i progetti per la missione continentale dell’America Latina considerano la Bib-bia come fondamento principale di formazione dei discepoli missionari e della vita cri-stiana in genere.
Così la Pastorale Biblica e l’animazione Biblica della Pastorale sono divenuti un fenomeno di notevole importanza per l’evangelizzazione e la catechesi oggi, che susci-terà un profondo rinnovamento ecclesiale e un nuovo impulso missionario. La Sacra Scrittura – poiché offre la rivelazione divina – è “sapienza” che anima e forma il disce-polo alla sequela di Gesù, Capo del suo Corpo, per cui non può mancare in nessuna pastorale. Ciò significa che la Parola – come la Grazia e l’Amore – è una mediazione indispensabile per l’incontro con Gesù Cristo vivo.
Il fattore circostanziale e il metodo sono rilevanti , perché favoriscono una conoscenza ampia sulle origini, gli sviluppi e i limiti della Bibbia. Facilitare una lettura, a partire da situazioni e necessità diverse, consentirà di porre determinate accentuazioni morali, politiche, culturali, mistiche nella vita di ogni individuo. L’importante è che la rifles-sione di tutta la comunità cristiana possa percepire gli elementi sostanziali e le compo-nenti marginali delle testimonianze trasmesse e della fede vissuta. La lettura e l’interpretazione della Sacra Scrittura ricomincia con ogni epoca, con ogni cultura, con ogni individuo, aprendosi a un futuro ogni volta più pieno, che assume e completa le posizioni precedenti .
Da un certo tempo, si valorizza maggiormente la comunicazione umana che si manife-sta nella Bibbia, cioè, il valore delle tradizioni orali, del popolo o delle comunità dove hanno preso corpo i diversi scritti; il valore del redattore; l’influenza dell’ambiente, della cultura. La Bibbia si apprezza oggi, più che prima, come un insieme di espressioni vitali, testimonianze di esperienze storiche della fede. Sono scritti nati dalla vita per la vita. Per questo si valorizza oggi la dimensione comunicativa, senza lasciare da parte la presenza di Dio nel processo di formazione degli scritti. Ciò suppone che il lettore pos-sa entrare nel mondo degli autori biblici, nella loro storia, nelle circostanze che hanno avuto influenza; entrare nei loro sentimenti, convinzioni e aspettative esistenziali. Solo così potremo apprezzare i testi sacri come portatori di messaggi pertinenti per l’uomo di oggi e non come biografie o trattati etici, filosofici, teologici .
Valorizzare la dimensione umana della Bibbia, non toglie importanza al carattere sacro. Al contrario, lo situa nel mondo donde ebbe origine e si elaborò . Perciò occorre valo-rizzare la sua culla, il suo momento storico-culturale. Lo scrittore biblico è stato ispirato da Dio in un ambiente quotidiano. Così fu per i profeti e per San Paolo. Ciò è una que-stione di fedeltà al messaggio originale dell’autore. Senza dubbio è parola di Dio, da Lui infusa, che si esprime in termini umani, storici e culturalmente situati. Perciò sotto-posti a molte limitazioni e condizionamenti. Ciò porta a superare una lettura fondamen-talista della Bibbia .
L’ermeneutica è importante per non cadere in risposte superficiali, ingenue o dogmati-che. Cioè, ci protegge dalla trappola del soggettivismo, dei pregiudizi “ideologici”, del-le manipolazioni e delle deformazioni del suo messaggio. Perciò è indispensabile che i contenuti biblici delle nostre edizioni utilizzino correttamente le fonti delle nostre radi-ci, quelle da cui deriva la nostra identità cristiana.
2. La centralità di Gesù Cristo
Lo stesso Papa Ratzinger, nel suo libro Gesù di Nazaret , diventato insostituibile per la cultura cristiana e cattolica, avverte che il suo scritto “è unicamente espressione della sua ricerca personale del volto del Signore”. Perciò ogni persona è libera di contraddir-lo . Da questa prospettiva egli affronta la questione del Gesù reale, del Gesù storico, in senso proprio e vero.
I problemi esegetici e teologici dei metodi storici e critici propri dell’investigazione degli ultimi secoli, con riferimento alla questione del Gesù storico e del Gesù della fe-de, esigono da noi Paolini e Paoline un’attenzione ai contenuti che pubblichiamo su Gesù.
Dovremo progredire in una interpretazione teologica e in una più acuta sensibilità ese-getica, che garantisce una “relazione viva con Gesù Via, Verità e Vita”, perché la nostra gente trovi forza in Lui, come suggerisce il documento di Aparecida. Con questa intui-zione, occorre superare la sconnessione profonda tra il Gesù storico e il Gesù della fe-de, perché il Gesù della fede senza il Gesù della storia si trasforma in “fideismo sogget-tivo”, e il Gesù storico senza il Gesù della fede degenera in “archeologia senza sen-so” . Se non si verifica questa situazione, resta incerto il punto autentico di riferimento con Gesù Cristo . Rudolf Schnackenburg, esegeta cattolico, uno dei più importanti della metà del secolo XX, percepì il pericolo di questa situazione per la fede, nel suo libro “La persona di Gesù Cristo riflessa nei quattro Vangeli”.
Già l’enciclica Divino afflante Spiritu , del 1943, importante per l’esegesi cattolica, aveva aperto le porte all’uso del metodo storico-critico nella teologia cattolica. Da allo-ra si sono compiuti nuovi passi e si sono sviluppate altre visioni metodologiche sia per ciò che si riferisce al lavoro rigorosamente storico, come alla collaborazione tra la teo-logia e il metodo storico nell’interpretazione della Sacra Scrittura.
Un passo decisivo lo fece la Costituzione Dei Verbum , sulla Divina Rivelazione, quando separa chiaramente, come principio dell’esegesi teologica, l’unità dei testi bi-blici, aggiungendo che si deve considerare la tradizione viva di tutta la Chiesa, l’analogia della fede e la correlazione interna della fede (Cf. DV, 12).
Importanti prospettive nel campo dei “Metodi e criteri per l’interpretazione” e l’investigazione esegetica si trovano nei due documenti della Pontificia Commissione Biblica: “L’interpretazione della Bibbia nella Chiesa” e “Il popolo Giudeo e le sue Sacre Scritture nella Bibbia cristiana” .
L’esegesi moderna ha mostrato che le parole trasmesse nella Bibbia si trasformano in Scrittura attraverso un processo di rilettura sempre nuovo: i testi antichi si ritrovano in una nuova situazione, letti e intesi in modo nuovo.
Concludendo cito nuovamente le parole di Ratzinger nell’introduzione del libro già menzionato: “Il metodo storico continua ad essere indispensabile a partire dalla strut-tura della fede cristiana. Così che non si può rinunciare al lavoro esegetico. Per la fede biblica è fondamentale riferirsi a fatti storici reali. Essi sono un fondamento costitutivo della storia di salvezza. Con il “et incarnatus est” professiamo l’entrata effettiva di Dio nella storia reale. Se tralasciamo questa storia, la fede cristiana resta eliminata e tra-sformata in un’altra religione. Se la storia è parte essenziale della fede cristiana in que-sto senso, essa deve affrontare il metodo storico. Lo richiede la stessa fede .
3. Non parlare solo di religione, ma di tutto cristianamente (AD 87).
Tutto ciò che è vero e giusto, tutto ciò che è amabile (Fil 4,8), è oggetto delle nostre edizioni. Pertanto, il cambiamento di epoca, il pluralismo culturale e religioso, l’interculturalità e la interdisciplinarietà ci interpellano sul linguaggio e il contenuto da proporre alla persone del mondo attuale, sotto l’esperienza della vita nello Spirito.
1. L’ascolto dello Spirito nella storia ci insegna: l’arte di inculturare i contenuti, i lin-guaggi e le forme del messaggio di salvezza dei popoli; il modo di scoprire nuovi volti nella società; la possibilità di aprirci al dialogo e alla collaborazione ecumenica e inter-religiosa con la nostra identità di Paolini e Paoline nella Chiesa.
La conseguenza sarà quella di poter trasmettere la certezza dello Spirito che irrompe nella storia, tocca e spinge le persone individualmente e socialmente verso Dio, verso l’interiorità e l’azione. Di conseguenza l’amore che viene dal Padre e dal Figlio si tra-duce in storia, come solidarietà, giustizia, fraternità al di là delle frontiere. Lo Spirito da parte sua è costruttore dell’unità delle relazioni, annuncia la libertà ai prigionieri, la vista ai ciechi, libera gli oppressi e manifesta l’anno favorevole del Signore (Cf. Lc 4,18ss).
2. La missione nel cuore del mondo. Le nostre edizioni assumono la responsabilità di convocare e di impegnare tutte le persone di buona volontà a collaborare nel processo di umanizzazione della società. Cioè esse rivolgono un appello a tutti gli esseri umani perché si impegnino nella missione di costruire la famiglia umana nella “casa comune della creazione”.
3. Tutto l’umano è nostro. La situazione e i problemi dell’umanità fanno parte delle nostre preoccupazioni apostoliche, allo stesso modo in cui don Alberione li considerò per lo sviluppo della sua vocazione, nel contesto in cui viveva, quando si pose la do-manda: verso dove cammina l’umanità? Dobbiamo comunicare l’annuncio del Gesù del Vangelo come luce di Dio e paradigma per tutti i problemi e le situazioni che vive l’umanità.
Pertanto miriamo alla società intera con le sue aspirazioni, i suoi progetti, il suo umane-simo e la sua sete di Dio come lo faceva Paolo. Ciò implica di conoscerla con la sua crisi economica, sociale, ecologica, culturale e democratica; in situazioni di povertà, di violenza e persecuzione. Inoltre considerarla nella costruzione di progetti comuni, di gesti di solidarietà e di prospettive per un futuro migliore. Avendo presente questo pa-norama, è necessario proporre un’altra alternativa di mondo come metafora e come simbolo della novità del regno, che si intravede in mezzo a noi. Occorre ancora chiarire che la nuova umanità è opera dello Spirito. Noi l’attendiamo e collaboriamo con tutto il nostro essere e con la nostra missione perché si realizzi.
4. Considerare universalmente i popoli e le culture in una grande “rete” solidale, che nella loro diversità può mirare a costruire unione (Cf. Gv 21,11), condividendo la gra-tuità al fine di garantire condizioni di vita degna: salute, alimentazione, educazione, abitazione e lavoro per tutti. Gesù ci dice, con la sua vita pratica, che chi non ha nulla, gli esclusi, sono gestori della missione della Chiesa, partecipi del progetto di Dio, poi-ché con essi si apre lo spazio per mostrare i segni della giustizia e le ragioni della spe-ranza. Partendo da questo, in una società sempre più pluralista, saremo integratori di forze, che ci porteranno alla costruzione di un mondo giusto, riconciliato e solidale.
5. Tutti i battezzati sono discepoli missionari di Gesù. Da questo criterio nasce il no-stro impegno di essere formatori di tutti i discepoli missionari tra i battezzati. Per que-sto il documento di Aparecida raccomanda di seguire “con più cura le tappe del primo annuncio, l’iniziazione cristiana e la maturità della fede” . Qui si dovrebbe promuove-re la coerenza tra la fede e la vita, l’incarnazione dei valori del Regno, l’inserimento nella comunità per poter dar ragione della sua speranza e scoprire il servizio che il Si-gnore chiede a ognuno nella Chiesa e nella società.
6. Assumere una ecclesiologia di comunione in un mondo che promuove l’individualismo e l’interesse personale. La diversità di carismi, di ministeri e di servi-zio apre l’orizzonte all’esercizio quotidiano della comunione, ponendo i doni a disposi-zione degli altri e permettendo la circolazione della carità (Cf. 1Cor 12,4-12). Così la comunità ecclesiale diventa “casa e scuola di comunione” (NMI, 43). Pertanto è indi-spensabile incentivare esperienze di comunione nelle diocesi e nelle parrocchie . A sua volta formare comunità discepole, missionarie, accoglienti, integratrici e solidali, che manifestino l’uomo nuovo in Cristo. Ciò comporta di accogliere le figure dei profeti e dei pellegrini che denunciano le situazioni di peccato, le strutture ingiuste, e che annun-ciano i valori della vita piena in Cristo.
7. La dignità umana e la buona notizia della vita. Porre la nostra missione al servizio della vita piena. “Sono venuto per dare agli uomini la vita e per darla in abbondanza” (Gv 10,10). L’annuncio di Gesù Cristo riguarda tutto l’essere umano e lo porta a svi-luppare la sua esistenza “nella dimensione personale, familiare, sociale e culturale” . Le condizioni di vita di molti abbandonati, esclusi e ignorati nelle loro miserie e dolori, sono contro il progetto del Padre e interpellano i credenti a un maggiore impegno in loro favore. Sotto questo aspetto occorre sottolineare il rapporto inscindibile tra l’amore di Dio e l’amore del prossimo. Considerando il contesto in cui vive gran parte del popo-lo, la nostra produzione deve dimostrare che il messaggio è al servizio della vita, parti-colarmente in quelle situazioni disumanizzanti e incompatibili con la speranza del Re-gno.
8. L’ecologia. Annunciare la Buona Notizia per ristabilire l’ordine nell’ambiente e promuovere una coscienza favorevole che si impegni alla conservazione, come ha fatto il Papa Giovanni Paolo II, quando lanciò un appello a tutti i responsabili del nostro pia-neta per proteggere e conservare la natura creata da Dio. A partire da questo, non pos-siamo permettere che il nostro mondo diventi sempre più una terra degradata e degra-dante.
9. Promuovere l’educazione e il mondo intellettuale e politico. La Chiesa nel suo compito educativo deve creare, con i suoi agenti in questo campo, spazi di formazione e di dialogo profetico, al fine di formare testimoni della Buona Notizia del Regno nel mondo contemporaneo. Ciò implica il consolidamento nei politici e nei legislatori di una coscienza cristiana, che favorisca la costruzione di una società giusta e fraterna, secondo i principi della Dottrina sociale della Chiesa (DA, p. 2).
10. La comunicazione evangelizzatrice. Noi Paolini e Paoline, con la forza del nostro carisma, siamo convocati per intervenire nelle nuove situazioni storiche, sociali ed ec-clesiali, per comunicare la Buona Notizia del Regno, nelle forme adatte e secondo la nostra esperienza di fede, coordinate e integrate nella pastorale della Chiesa.
Coscienti che oggi le persone “vivono in rete”, cioè immerse nel flusso di una comuni-cazione senza limiti, e che la cultura digitale sta “creando un nuovo soggetto”, modifi-cando le forme di relazione e di vivere, sentiamo l’urgenza di scoprire un nuovo stile missionario, che valorizzi la logica della connessione in rete, che susciti sinergie e col-laborazioni, che aiuti la circolazione di esperienze di fede. Ci troviamo immersi in nuo-vi spazi simbolici, in forme inedite di relazione, in opportunità per nuove identità, in soggetti diversi . La comunicazione, come forma di evangelizzazione, trova nel “tutto in tutti” dell’apostolo Paolo scenari creativi per lo sviluppo della nostra missione.
10. LE SFIDE ATTUALI DELL’APOSTOLATO PAOLINO
Per concludere, desidero sottolineare alcuni punti che mi sembrano importanti per noi Paolini e Paoline:
1. Assumere e manifestare la visione apostolica di Alberione: “Il vostro apostolato non mira solo al progresso individuale della persona, ma a formare una mentalità nuova nella società. Ciò significa darle una nuova impronta, una nuova direzione”.
2. Entrare personalmente e comunitariamente nell’esperienza apostolico-spirituale di Paolo, che consiste nell’acquisire “un pensiero paolino” , come raccomanda il IX Ca-pitolo Generale delle FSP del 2007. Ciò significa che, come Paolo, noi Paolini e Paoli-ne dobbiamo avere un pensiero paolino sulla comunicazione e sull’evangelizzazione. Siamo inviati a evangelizzare nella comunicazione e con la comunicazione, non come abili professionisti, ma come persone consacrate che vivono un nuovo stile di santità nella comunicazione, come apostole di Cristo nella comunicazione. 1. INTRODUCTION
The Apostolic Vision of the Paulines and Pauline Sisters
This seminar confirms that, through Paul of Tarsus and Giacomo Alberione, we have received from God a specific mission for our times. We feel, with them, the “serious-ness of the mission that the Lord has entrusted to us” (AD 209).
The objective of the last days of our conference is that of rethinking together that which is specific about the pastoral action and experience of faith of the Paulines and the Pauline Sisters in the Church today, keeping in mind our mission as communicators. This challenge will lead us to the genuine sources of our vocation, to seek the funda-mental reference points that will allow us to qualify our experience of faith and the con-tents of the Pauline International Multimedia Publisher.
The “centrality of communication as new evangelization” is a constitutive, perennial element of our mission. For the preaching, with the means of social communication, Alberione has created the Congregation of the Paulines (1914) and of the Pauline Sis-ters (1915), for the scope of configuring a new form of evangelization.
Reflecting on the contents of the experience of faith in St. Paul and on the contents of the Pauline International Multimedia Publisher, we must consider that the “Pauline charism is a unity inseparable from a spirituality centered in Christ the Master and a specific pastoral service in the ecclesial community” . For “our vocation” in the Church, Alberione sought a spiritual option inspired by St. Paul, for the formation of "new apostles”, full of wisdom and fervor . Alberione did not intend to found a Catho-lic publishing house, but to create a new vocation, a new “preaching” in the Church.
The hermeneutical key to St. Paul and Giacomo Alberione is the pastoral programme. An evangelizing, communicational pastoral that has its own needs. With a supernatural vision, Alberione affirmed that the purpose of our apostolate is pastoral, that is, to give God to men and to give men to God, in Christ Jesus (Vademecum, 1205). The aposto-late of communication is the fruit of a spirituality lived by each member in particular and by the congregation in general. That is, the editorial production without a life in God is not enough. It is from this life that the editorial products become a strong testi-mony of a living experience.
Both in Paul’s vision as well as in Alberione’s, one cannot isolate the experience of faith from the global unity of the Pauline mission. That is, the contents, instruments and languages of the announcement of the Gospel to be used, cannot be used in a way independent of the commitments taken on with the interlocutors, cultures and traditions of those for whom our vocation is carried out.
It is necessary to specify that Saint Paul is the prototype of the following of Christ that Alberione sets as the basis of our mission, since he intends to found these elements – as expressed in the preceding paragraph – in a single unity, that is, the preaching of the Good News. Already in 1925, writing to the Cooperators, the Blessed explains this task of Paul, first of all in relation to the addressees of Paul’s mission, which are the gentile peoples, the farthest away, and in second place, because St. Paul is a formator of apos-tles, in the sense that “the Letters of St. Paul form souls and hearts for the apostolate, they form the apostles according to the heart of Jesus, strong, holy, fruitful, apostles of their own times” .
Thus, we wish to make an excursion into Paul’s contexts, contents and pastoral strate-gies, to give greater vitality to our Pauline apostolic roots.
2. THE HISTORICAL CONTEXT OF PAUL’S EVANGELIZATION
Paul in the context of the Early Church
The question of the origins of Christianity is closely linked to the position regarding its truth, its identity and its diversity. Despite the relative abundance of documents, we know few things about its beginnings and its first developments as a community, and about the life of its first members. Rahner joins the idea of a beginning with the es-sence of Christianity. He affirms:
The Apostolic Church is a qualitatively unique mode, the object of divine intervention. It carries out a function that is unique and irreplaceable in the whole resto of the history of the Church. Its beginning enjoys an originality, irreduceableness and purity in the ex-pression of its essence that are proper only to this first phase. The Apostolic Church is not only the first period of the Church in time, but also the permanent foundation and the norm for the whole future .
Thus, for Froncois Voiga, “the story of early Christianity, the complexity of its evolu-tion, must not be reduced to any simple system”, because it is difficult to arrange the quantity of elements that implied the articulation of this new experience of Faith in Christ.
In the history of early Christianity, one observes a multiplicity of phenomena and cur-rents that are not easy to situate, establishing the relationship between them. One can speak of plurality in the origins of early Christianity. By way of example, one may cite the itinerant preaching (also called itinerant radicalism), the Christian rabbinicalism of Judaic Christianity, the sapiential tradition, and the school of the beloved disciple. In the 30’s and 40’s of the I century, the time of the first developments of the Christian era, the “missionaries are itinerants”. They work in Galilee and Syria, particularly among the Jews. Geographical and numerical growth obliges them to create new forms of organization, to choose new animators and missionaries (Acts 6:2-6). This lead di-rectly to a rereading of the Jewish Scriptures with new eyes.
The group, to which Stephen belonged, with a Hellenistic influence , interprets the Bi-ble differently. The Hellenistic communities converted on the basis of the Christian mission that was carried out later. Above all, the result was that that group of persons conquered, through the preaching of the Gospel, not only the Jews, but also the Gentiles (Gal 2:11-14). Due to the structure and organization of Paul and of the mission itself, Western Christianity, from the forties to the seventies, tended to become an urban movement of Hellenistic and Roman society. This trend was facilitated by the mobility of persons in the great Empire, by the persecutions against the initial community and the change of the political, religious and cultural situation. In roughly thirty years, the Gospel spread throughout the Empire (Acts 1:8), as a result of Paul’s travels and those of the other apostles. Without a doubt, this development generated a radicalization of the conflict with the “brothers” in Jerusalem. Paul and Barnabas, followers of the Hel-lenistic line, go off to seek new missionary horizons (Acts 9:29-30), in which they will develop a different model of the Church from the one being lived out in Jerusalem. This Church is guided by Peter, and its structures are taken from the Judaic tradition , though in communion with the new elements assumed from the experience of faith in Jesus.
Paul in the Context of the Roman World
Paul’s travels were undertaken between the years 46 and 58 A.D. Throughout this time, the Empire’s central government continued its efforts to concentrate power and riches in Rome. In addition, it sought to preserve the so-called “Pax Romana”, which favoured international trade, the collection of taxes and tributes. As a result, slavery increased in the peripheries, while luxury increased in the center, with a consequent relaxing of morals. To guarantee the “Pax Romana”, the Empire introduced the obliga-tory worship of the Emperor.
Pauline Christianity and the ideology of Roman imperialism find themselves in a radi-cal conflict of meaning. Roman imperial theology is the ideological center of the power assumed by the emperor. Augustus’ name, as well as that of his successors, is characterized as son of the gods, god and god of gods. He is the lord and redeemer of the world. The term Kyrios, “lord”, always indicates the emperor. These “truths” are found everywhere, much like publicity and propaganda today. The Romans believed that Rome’s success in war and conquest was due to its morality and its religious prac-tice (“pietas” and “religio”).
Without examining the archaeology of Roman imperial theology, it is difficult to com-prehend the exegesis of Pauline Christian theology and Paul’s pastoral methods. The Roman Empire, for example, is based on the common principle of peace through vic-tory. Paul, a follower of Christ Jesus, finds himself in head-on opposition with this theology. For his part, he affirms that the Kingdom of God is already present in the world, proposing peace through justice, or, more clearly, through faith, in the covenant with the living and true God (1Thess 1:9) and in his Son, dead and risen, Jesus Christ.
From this are drawn the same words, “Grace and Peace” from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ, present in the initial greeting of Paul’s letters, which sum-marize his message and his mission, his faith and theology, which are more subversive than we can imagine.
It is necessary to clarify that the Greek word Ekklesia, which Paul uses to indicate the Christian community, was originally used to indicate the citizens of any Greek city, gathered in assembly, who were able to make clear and determining decisions regarding self-government.
The content of Paul’s preaching calls the Romans’ attention, awakening some suspi-cion. Christians, in proclaiming Jesus as Son of God, deliberately mean to deny Caesar and his title and to announce Jesus as Lord and Savoir; this implies a direct betrayal of the Emperor, clearly prophesying centuries of martyrdom .
Christianity appeared to the elite and to the philosophers as an irrational phenomenon; they disqualified it and treated it as a superstition, being a new religion in the Roman Empire, foreign, obscurantist, without any recognized tradition. The paradox is that the same cause for the despisal of Christianity among the intellectuals was transformed into a cause for its success in the social environments within the cities, that is, it entered in a direct way into the most popular environments of the empire. The themes of the preaching presented, on one hand, an exclusivist monotheism, and on the other, a rigor-ous ethic upon which it was possible to construct individual consciences and personal identity as a human being.
From the historical and contingent point of view, the new Christian movement appeared in a moment in which it could respond to the search for a personal and social identity in wide circles of the Roman Empire. The mystery religions and the gods no longer of-fered satisfying elements for human existence. The triumph of Christianity is owed to the structure in which its system of beliefs is expressed: it is open to Jews and Greeks, slaves and free men, men and women, without any preconditions .
It was not easy for Jesus of Nazareth to preach in the Roman world, conditioned by the power of the empire, represented in Palestine by Pontius Pilate. The list of martyrs of the first centuries confirms this information . Paul himself, according to tradition, was beheaded by the imperial sword, during the reign of Nero (54-68 A.D.).
Paul in the Judaic Context
The influence of Judaism on the peoples of different origins in the Roman Empire was deep and lasting. It demonstrated a tremendous vigour through the diffusion of the Talmud, making proselytes and sympathizers. On the one hand, the exclusiveness of the Jewish worship and the rigor of its laws generated a barrier between Jews and Gen-tiles. On the other, there was something in the Jewish religion and community that sat-isfied the basic existential necessities in the Roman Empire and beyond .
Around the III century, Judaism had become the most popular religion among the pa-gans. As a result, it was a powerful rival to Christianity. This helps us to understand the tensions between the early Church and the Jewish Synagogues in the first centuries of Christianity .
The period of the origins of Christianity has a “problematic” character. The idea of a unitary apostolic tradition is inadequate, due to the diversity of elements present in its origins. The Judeo-Christian communities developed in the synagogues until the end of the first century. Christianity’s relationship with the synagogues caused violent con-flicts, particularly in the years around 40 A.D. Paul himself informs us of the first per-secutions of Christians on the part of the synagogues (Gal 1:13.23; Phil 3:6). The Pharisees had decided to exclude from the synagogue all those who confessed Jesus (Jn 9:22; 12:42; 16:2a). Paul was often punished in the synagogues (2 Cor 11:24-25), for exactly the same reasons for which he had persecuted the Christians of that region (Gal 1:13.23). In the Roman and Hellenistic cities, Christianity became a rival of Judaism, after having been diffused in the synagogues and throughout their network .
Paul’s radical break with his Jewish past, after the event of his conversion, the aban-donment of the Mosaic Law with the rigorous observance of its precepts, the preaching of the non-necessity of circumcision for salvation, all cultivated enmity with his former brothers in the faith. Paul in his letters mentions sufferings, opposition and injuries from some Jews (1 Thess 1:6; 2:2): “they impeded him to preach to the gentiles” (2:16). The celebrated assembly in Jerusalem (towards 48 A.D.), demonstrates, however, that the unity is not broken. Without a doubt it constitutes, at the same time, the dividing line between the various currents. Up until the moment of the assembly, everything revolves around the community of Jerusalem and its most representative figures, above all Peter. From this moment onward, however, everyone “disappears” beyond the hori-zon and Paul enters into action, and becomes with his work the main event of the early Church.
3. THE CONTENT OF PAUL’S PREACHING
Paul’s Hermeneutical Key
Paul applies to the reading and interpreting of the Scriptures a new hermeneutical key based on the mystery of Christ, convinced that in Jesus, the Son of God, all the prom-ises made in the first covenant have their fulfilment (2Cor 1:19-20). In this horizon of Christological faith, the events and personages of the Jewish scriptures are changed into figures that anticipate the Christian experience .
In his Christological reading of the Bible, Paul depends upon the early Christian tradi-tion present in the first communities. In them, the essential foundations of the an-nouncement of faith are mixed with the prophetic testimony of Scripture: “Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the Scriptures (…) he was raised on the third day, in accordance with the Scriptures (1Cor 15:3.4) . In this perspective, he underlines the continuity of God’s action in the history of salvation, which reaches its fulfilment in Christ Jesus.
In Paul, the mission to evangelize is the fundamental condition to live and witness to the salvific action of Christ, dead and risen. Because of this, he could affirm vigor-ously: “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! (1Cor 9:16)”.
Paul’s Gospel
A fundamental fragment reveals to us the root of the Gospel preached by Paul: “Now I should remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. (1Cor 15,1-2)”.
According to this text of Paul, the Gospel saves. In Galatians (1:8-18), “Gospel” means for Paul the “Apocalypse”, that is, the “Revelation” of Jesus Christ in his life. In Greek, one says “Apocalipsis” of Jesus, which means the way Christ lives in me. Apocalypse, in this sense, is a manifestation. In other words, it causes the curtains to part or the veil to be removed in order to observe reality directly – unveiling-. Paul, as a Jew, believed in works and in the law. Now, he has experience of Jesus Christ. With this he evangelizes, as he declares to the Galatians:
“For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was pro-claimed by me is not of human origin; for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation (apocalypse) of Jesus Christ (Gal 1:11-12). But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal (apocalypse) his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles (Gal 1,15-16). For I handed on to you (tradition) as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scrip-tures”(1Cor 15:3-4).
As this text says, Paul did not invent the Gospel. On the contrary, he received it whole from the community, at the beginning of 30’s, when he had the “Apocalypse” of the Risen One, the moment he experienced salvation, encountering Christ on the road to Damascus. This clarity of Paul also appears in the Letter to the Romans: “For I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek”(Rom 1:16).
What does the Risen One do in a person? Paul answered this question by referring to his existence and taking examples from the situations of daily life. The one who makes room for the Risen one, becomes “Gospel”, witness and good news for the others. There is an intrinsic force (dynamys, enérgeia) in the Gospel that comes from the Spirit, capable of penetrating man’s heart and transforming him. Above all it results in a change in one’s personal values.
Paul, assuming the force of the Gospel in his life, overcomes the works of the Torah, which emphasizes one’s personal effort and capacities. The Torach gives strong value, from this perspective, to one’s own “I”. For the one who is in Christ, the importance is oriented towards the others. A conversion happens, represented by the Greek term “metanoia”, which literally translates as: change of mind and a mind in continual change.
For Paul, when a person converts, it is like a renewal of the death and resurrection of Jesus. When this occurs in a person, Jesus crucified-risen transforms him into an indi-vidual like Him. Paul, in various passages of his letters, names this process “baptismal life”, understood as an immersion of the individual in the death and resurrection of Christ to enter into a new condition, placing ones own qualities at the service of oth-ers .
Therefore, the Gospel is not an ideology but a way of being. Paul knows that after the interiorization of this vital word, one must transmit it with his own life, “in a concrete situation”. In a word, there can be no communication of the Gospel without an in-volvement of the life of the one who announces it. The individual transforms it into life, he or she irradiates it vitally (2Cor 4:6.16). Thus we can deduce that the Gospel is communicated also by example and by a witness of life. This implies that the word is not only interiorized, but is made vital by transforming it into works, which can enter into the world and transform it.
Paul’s Kerygma
The term “kerygma” used by Paul calls our attention to the verb with which it may be linked, since in Greek, “kêrýssein” (to announce, give testimony), has the same root as “kerygma” (announcement, festive and joyful sign, testimony worthy of faith) .
Thus, one can conclude that Kerygma, in Greek kerysso, means to preach. For this rea-son, this work indicates the apostolic preaching of the first age of Christianity, when the disciples set out to make known their new way of living, marked by an encounter with the Risen One. The nucleus of their preaching could not be simpler: Jesus is risen! The only kerygmatic dogma was the salvific event of Jesus (1Cor 15:14.1). The faith was founded on him .
The practice of the proclamation was aimed at causing one to question oneself, to invite one to conversion, that is, to accept not only the announcement as such, but also the person of Jesus as Lord. In this sense, it confronts man with a reality, a perennial and transcendental event. Furthermore, it invites him to accept the Kerygma as an act of faith that produces salvation. From this perspective, the faith, lived and witnessed, caught on and spread. All this was sustained by faith in the the living Christ, “seated at the right hand of God”, and present in the midst of them with his Spirit.
The one who announced spoke in the name of God, like the prophets, because he was not only making known some elements of the mystery of redemption, but was aiming at enabling man and society itself to change its behavior in many aspects. His word be-came efficacious: when it was welcomed it produced that salvation announced by Je-sus’ resurrection, that is, the person – the soul of the man – was transformed by the ac-tion of God. This is the mission of whoever decides to announce the word (Rom 6:6-11). The Kerygma included the interpretation of the meaning of the event – Jesus Christ, both in himself and in man.
For Paul, the Kerygma is not just the content of the first announcement – the Death and Resurrection of Jesus –, but also the pastoral method for making him known. An an-nouncement which, for its value and importance, must provoke a great moral impact, bringing the person to conversion and full adhesion to Jesus Christ.
The Kerygma prepared the way for a progressive formation, detailed, united and or-dered, through the catecheses (Didaché, Catechesis or Didascalia). The following phases were to follow: conversion, baptism and initiation into a coherent Christian life. The consequences of these elements lead to a rupture with the past, and beginning a new life. The new faith, from this position, lead to a new comprehension of life and of man.
Therefore, the intended audience of the Kerygma was everyone, but with special em-phasis on the neophytes and the Christian sympathizers . However, due to historical circumstances, the proclamation of the good news had the possibility to extend itself throughout the gentile-pagan world, whose mentality and conception of reality was completely different. For the carrying out of this task, it was necessary to adapt the language, so that the transmission of the good news would be comprehensible to other cultures, such as the Greco-Roman (Hellenistic) one. Paul was an exponent of this new way of proclaiming the good news . It is necessary to clarify how this expansion of the Kerygma resulted directly in a more solid evolution.
Paul’s Exhortations
Paul knows how the use the art of exhortation to move individuals to act; he knows how to discover those key points, coherent with the doctrine that he is expounding, ne-cessary to bring persons to behave differently. I “exhort you” means, in taking a look at his line of thought, to infuse courage, to comfort. This expression is used to trigger mechanisms that stimulate a change in life. That is, it presents the way of “living in the Lord” (Cf. Phil 4:8). Obedience and commitment are the proper response to these an-nouncements (Rom 12:1-2). In other words, the Pauline exhortations, in their spiritual nature, arouse a life coherent with what God wants. The horizon of the exhortation is the mercy of God, for a love that brings one to adhere to Him.
4. PAUL’S PRINCIPLES AND PASTORAL STRATEGIES
Paul never declared himself the pastor of any particular community that he founded, but considered himself an apostle (Cf. Rom 1:5), animating these communities, accompany-ing them and communicating to them the divine life with the announcement of the Gospel and the dedication of his entire life. However, a more detailed analysis of his letters reveals him to be a pastor concerned with instructing and guiding his communi-ties. Paul’s pastoral activity becomes a way of life “in the Lord” (Cf. Phil 4:8; Col 3:17; 1Cor 7:39) that will transform itself into a service of unity of communion and of ecclesial mission.
Paul’s mission among the gentiles is presented a san organized missionary undertaking. His task is to bring the Gospel where the name of Christ is still unknown (Rom 15:20). The main objectives of his strategies are those of creating communities in the urban centers, involving a great number of collaborators and instructing through his letters.
The Gathering of Believers as “Body of Christ” in the Home – in the Family
As in the synagogue, Paul was one of the first to consider the home-family as part of his missionary strategy , forming new Christian communities, alive in the faith . The home was the gathering place par excellence for the Christian communities. Homes took on a decisive importance in the evolution of Hellenistic Christianity, because they were social units that later converted as a whole to the Gospel. They became cells of faith in the midst of life’s daily realities, as can be seen from Paul’s own list of greet-ings. The home was the place for the announcement and hearing of the Word. In it, Christians shared the Lord’s Supper in the breaking of the bread, in prayer, in instruc-tion and in bodily nourishment.
The pastoral principle that guided Paul in his activity of evangelization was that of leaven: Do you not know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough?” (1Cor 5:). He believed it necessary to diffuse the Word with its transforming power through-out the whole Roman Empire, through small living cells constituted as communities of faith. These were the result of a significant process of inculturization and a communi-tarian sense of the pastoral activity.
The organization of the Churches in the Hellenistic and Roman cities clearly cannot be attributed to Paul: it was not his invention. These structures already existed for social meetings of the families; Paul adopted them for his strategy of evangelization.
The Church as Body of Christ, in which each member derives his or her vitality and fertility from the Head (2Cor 12:12-26; Eph 1:22-23; Col 1:18-20), constitutes the pas-toral basis of Paul’s ministry. Regarding this he says: it is Christ the Head “from whom the whole body, nourished and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God.” (Col 2:19; Eph 4:15-16), without forgetting the gift of the Spirit, through Baptism and the Eucharist (1Cor 12:12). The community, on one hand, is a body, a living organism that transmits life and, on the other, it is not a question of a structure, system or scaffolding, but represents the Body of Christ.
In this model, “the Church is community around the Lord’s table”, because it united by the bread, which represents the manner in which all the baptized are called to partici-pate in the “Body of Christ”. It is constituted in a community of service and of life de-riving from the Eucharist, which gives it, in this way, through the Christian event, a social structure (1Cor 12:12-27) .
Paul ecounters some difficulties and challenge (sometimes serious), within the already existing groups, when he proclaims the word to the communities,. He speaks of preach-ers who, out of envy, teach insincerely (Phil 1:16-18); wanting to impose Judaic prac-tices on new Christians. In addition, he speaks of internal divisions (1Cor 1:10-13), of fanatical charismatic persons (1 Cor 12:1-3) who present the Lord’s Supper as an occa-sion to exclude the poorest (1Cor 11:27-22). In the communities of Galatia they dis-credit Paul’s preaching, because he does not demand circumcision of the gentiles, or even the observance of the Jewish laws (Gal 4:21; 5:4). All this was the beginning of an ethical and religious distancing of the communities (1Cor 5:1).
A question arises: what was Paul’s reaction? This was one of the apostle’s greatest sufferings. On the one hand he is hard, even sarcastic, with these persons (2Cor 11:5); on the other he reacts with wisdom, using his ability as a pedagogue and pastor. Al-most all his letters aim to sustain, clarify, and form the communities.
Paul, Evangelizer of the Cities
Today it is agreed that Christianity was an urban phenomenon during its beginnings in Palestine , given that Paul and his collaborators turned towards the large cities situated along the main roads of communication of that age . They were the initiators of the evangelization of the main peoples, because they had the possibility to found among them the communities of the new faith . Thus the Christian faith opened itself to the members of the world’s cities, people who were not necessarily part of the people of Israel.
New and heterogeneous groups of Christians adopted modes and places of living out the particular experience that was making itself known. In the cities of the Mediterra-nean Basin, there were people of different cultures and social conditions (freemen and slaves). In addition there were neighborhoods arranged according to ethnic and occu-pational affinities: Paul, without a doubt, sought out the “quarter of the tentmakers”, with whom he went to work. He dedicated his free time to the apostolate (1Thess 2:9; 1Cor 4:12; 9:1-24; Acts 19:11-12).
The Missionary Collegial Work
Paul’s apostolic organization involves numerous collaborators, who work with him (1Cor 3:9; Phil 2:25) and preach the gospel (1Cor 16:16; 1Thess 3:2), following the divine mandate (1Cor 3:9; 1Tm 3:2).
With his ministry, Paul sets the bases of the pastoral activity of the Church. His letters show that he was never a lone worker, but always reconciled his missionary work with the need for collegiality, so that his collaborators were responsible with him both in founding the communities and keeping in touch with them through letters.
He had three groups of collaborators:
1. Those sent by the Church: these individuals are present in the communities, at the disposition of the Pauline mission with definite and limited duties, such as delivering his letters, transmitting information, and helping the other apostles.
2. The regular collaborators: a restricted group, including Barnabas, Silvanus and Timothy, who have closely supported Paul’s mission and the communities founded by him.
3. Independent collaborators: Paul encountered, more or less by chance, a group of persons who, for a certain time, have collaborated in the Pauline communities. Among these are Priscilla and Aquila.
His own letters testify to the commitment to “socializing the Pauline mission” and the results of these derived communities, which indicate the great activity of the col-laborators, among whome there were numerous women. The home-family and the hea-ds of these households helped one another in sustaining not only the apostle’s activity, but also the members of the other communities, who were passing through their re-gion .
The Letters, Paul’s Strategy of Apostolic Communication
The apostolic letters, written by Paul for his communities, are the first attempt to think out and represent the Christian faith in its own self-understanding, as a system of ra-tional and coherent convictions. They express the profound meaning of the experience of one who has accepted the faith. Paul requested, as a pastoral duty, that his letters be read in the gatherings of all the believers (1Thess 3:2-6) and that they should be passed around to the other communities. He writes them together with his companions in the mission.
Paul’s letters are not aimed solely at resolving problems that have arisen in the commu-nities, but are part of a strategy of apostolic communication, understood as a modality to maintain a dialogue that is capable of widening the interpretation of the announce-ment of Christ. Considered under the aspect of their composition, the epistolary com-munication implies, on the part of the author or sender, a personal commitment and an effort to be sincere that other forms of writing do not demand at the same level, because they make known his personal experience as well as his understanding of the world. Considered from the viewpoint of the receiver, the letter has a weight and efficacy dif-ferent from that of a conversation or a conference given before listeners in an audito-rium, since it can be reread, interpreted and preserved for the future. Paul’s letters be-came a kind of apostolic authority and a literary genre par excellence specific to the apostolic age .
5. PAUL’S EXPERIENCE IN THE CHARISM OF ALBERIONE
Fr. Alberione became aware of the presence of “new times” during the period of his formation. Born April 4, 1884 in San Lorenzo di Fossano, Piedmont, Italy, he had the good fortune of living in a culturally elevated climate and being able to count on wise and learned teachers. Gifted with a profound intelligence, original and intuitive, he was a lover of thought and reflection .
As a young seminarian, while he was in the Duomo di Alba Cathedral, during the night of the passage to the new century, 1900-1901, the Lord intervened. In a long moment of prayer he lived the experience of Christ in the Eucharist expressed in the words of Paul: “He loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20). He felt, then, the responsibil-ity of the call “Come to me, all you…” (Mt 11:28). In this light he understood the so-cial and ecclesial realities of his time. The Master opened his mind and heart to the challenge of a special mission in the new century: to be apostles of today, using today’s means. And he felt obligated to prepare himself to serve the Church and men of the new century, working in community (Cf. AD 15.20). The experience of this great light irra-diating from the Master (Cf. AD 153), Christ risen, the same light that oriented Paul (Cf. AD 159), was the root of the Pauline charism, made concrete in the Pauline Family.
At this point we must ask ourselves: what are the decisive ideas of St. Paul that later influenced the defining of the Pauline charism shaped by Don Alberione? Both in Al-berione and Paul, we find two converging dynamics. Above all, Don Alberione aspired to form apostles, according to the needs of the new times. For this task he sought to foster in young people a profound relationship with St. Paul, for the purpose of arous-ing love and enthusiasm for a living apostolate of good press as a means and work of evangelization. Furthermore, Alberione, as an instrument of God, felt the duty to give life, identity and development to an institution that might arrive apostolically to every man, with a new form of preaching in the Church. For this task he took inspiration from Paul’s missionary and organizational impulse, having found in him, through study and meditation on the Letter to the Romans, the true sense of the apostle. As a result, everything that can be dedicated to such a task can be learned from St. Paul (Cf. AD 64).
Don Alberione was profoundly persuaded that St. Paul has participated in the construct-ing and living out of the identity of the Pauline Family: “Everyone must look to St. Paul as their only father, master, model and founder: Because he really is. The Pauline Fam-ily was born because of him, it was fed and raised by him, and from him it has taken its spirit” (AD 2).
Moreover, he has formed the members of the Pauline Family to live in the “Pauline spirit”, which gushes from the life, letters and apostolate of St. Paul . This spirit must imbue and characterize the life of the “House”, that is, all of its work. Don Alberione for this reason adopted the name “Society of St. Paul”. We must remember that the first house and chapel were called by this name. The same name was given to the church in construction , because in it the Pauline spirituality is contained, and from it depart new missionary men and women towards the mission countries .
6. THE EXPERIENCE OF FAITH AND THE CONTENTS OF THE MISSION OF THE PAULINES AND PAULINE SISTERS TODAY
New Contexts and New Pastoral Needs
At the beginning of the new millennium, Pope John Paul II presented a new challenge: “put into the deep”. And he exhorted us to give new impulse to our spiritual and pas-toral commitment (NMI, 1) and to dedicate ourselves with commitment to the passion-ate task of pastoral rebirth (NM1, 29). This dynamism, the Pope reminds us, does not derive from sophisticated methods, nor even from multiplying activities and well thought out plans and demanding techniques, but from the strength and action of the Spirit united to the experience of the God of Jesus Christ in the spiritual life of the pas-toral workers.
Already in 1926, Alberione affirmed: “the world needs a new, ample and profound evangelization” . This was because he knew the changes and the challenges of the socio-ecclesial reality, and had perceived that the press could offer a new way of arriv-ing to people, in conformity with Christ’s invitation: “Come to me, all you…” (Mt 11:28). Because of this, he elaborated a pastoral project that includes the theological and political contents operative for “a new evangelization (…), rooted in Christ the Way, Truth and Life, as members living and operating in the Church, after the example of Paul”.
The evangelization carried out by the Paulines and Pauline Sisters integrates itself into the mission of the Church, since it is lived as a gift received that becomes a gift shared with the others. This sharing is carried out through communication. Thus, the whole of our apostolic multimedia publishing production must be oriented towards generating quality in our personal and communitarian faith. We consider that the experience of faith qualifies the Pauline charism, as St. Paul did with his mission. It is necessary to specify that faith has been understood as the welcoming of a personal revelation: “He who set me apart while I was still in my mother’s womb, and chose to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach the Good News about him to the pagans”(Gal 1:15-16) .
By ‘evangelization’ is meant the announcement of the Good News of the Kingdom and of the Father’s love, manifested in Christ dead and risen, for the salvation of men. We may affirm that evangelization and pastoral activity are not the same thing. Rather, they require and complete one another, reciprocally; evangelization is the duty that we seek to carry out, while the pastoral activity is the way we carry it out. In fact, the roots of the Pauline charism are of a biblical-theological character: that is, the Pauline charism takes on the mission as expressed by Jesus in the Gospel (Mt 11:28), but its realization is of a pastoral character, inasmuch as it seeks to reach all persons and com-munities, like Paul, with languages and means they can understand .
The document of Aparecida places the evangelization within the complex reality of today, in which we can contemplate in the “sorrowful and glorious face” of Christ, the humiliated face of many men and women of our peoples, as well as their vocation to the freedom of the sons of God, towards the full realization of their personal dignity and towards fraternity with all (DA, 31). The evangelization is historical, and so exists only inasmuch as it is incarnated in history, and is marked by the diverse factors that make up its specific identity in every time and place.
Taking as our basis the ecclesiology of Vatican II, above all regarding the “Mystery of Jesus”, “the absolute foundation of all pastoral activity” (NMI, 15), we can affirm that pastoral activity “is the ministry of the Church, the People of God, which, under the impulse of the Holy Spirit, carries out the evangelizing praxis of Jesus, for the up-building of itself and the extension of the Kingdom of God in the world” .
7. THE CONTENTS OF THE PAULINE INTERNATIONAL MULTIMEDIA PUB-LISHER
New Cultural Areas and New Areopagi
In thinking and carrying out the contents of the Evangelization with today’s means of communication, we Paulines and Pauline Sisters are called to contemplate the historical context and current reality “with the eyes of faith and reason” , to discern and lay out the pastoral aspects of the contents and forms of our communication of evangelization.
Pope John Paul II recognized that the rapid and profound changes that characterize to-day’s world have a great influence on missionary activity. “New cultural areas and modern areopagi appear. The first Areopagus is the world of communication, which is unifying humanity, transforming it into a global village” (RM, 34-37). Benedict XVI goes beyond this idea when he affirms: “The new media, with mobile telephone systems and the internet, are modifying the physiognomy of communication. Today communi-cations has the power not only to represent reality, but even to ‘create’ the events themselves” .
The web, one of the greatest inventions of recent history, offers an extraordinary oppor-tunity for the diffusion of knowledge, through various forms of digital technology. The addressees have passed from being receivers to creators of the contents communicated. A new subject is being born, a new consciousness, a new spirit of cooperation and a new communicative practice. In this context, there is no such thing as priority or privi-leged contents, since it is the public that establishes their validity. The current commu-nicative praxis places the interlocutor at the center of communication. This new form of communication challenges the Paulines and the Pauline Sisters to inculturate the salvific message in a new and different way.
The Aparecida document denounces the reality that “in general in the evangelization, in the catechesis and in particular in the pastoral activity, there remain languages that are of little significance for the current culture, particularly for the youth” (DA, 100 d). Moreover, due to these changes, reality in general is becoming ever more opaque and complex for persons, creating a crisis of meaning, frustration and anguish (DA, 36).
Regarding the religious situation, we cannot ignore one particular concern: often today individuals seek to construct a personal religion with fragments from other doctrines, putting together practices from different religions. Persons often refuse to belong to any religious institution, considering their own convictions part of an “invisible relig-ion”, belonging to the private sphere, with little or no external practice.
The novelty of these changes, in contrast with similar changes in the past, is that they have a global impact and thus regard the whole world (DA, 34). In this way they affect and disturb the life of our peoples, the religious and ethical sense of their lives, their faith and experience of God (Cf. DA, 35).
Our questions in regard to this might be: In what way does the complexity of the cur-rent context regard and question the quality of our contents and our proposals for evan-gelization? Who are our listeners today? What are their existential and spiritual needs? What forms and languages will they understand?
8. THE CHARISMATIC ROOT OF THE CONTENTS OF OUR APOSTOLATE
The Pastoral Sensibility of Alberione
Alberione, sensitive to the action of the Spirit in history, perceived the need for new apostles” for these “new times”. In other words, it is indispensable to be of our times, using new means. The use of the adjective “new” reveals the measure in which the Blessed perceives the historical changes. Some phrases show us the validity of Al-berione’s pastoral vision. Christianity is not a complex of ceremonies, rites and exter-nal practices, but a new life. It regards the whole man, it integrates him, consecrates him (ATP, 81). Christianity is a way of living out the Christian experience fully, taking on the values of the Gospel.
The preaching that announces it must be a communicative act, that is, one that is transmitted effectively. Here lies the pastoral problem of our preaching: the an-nouncement must lead us not to falsify the word of God, but to arouse the capacity to listen, assimilate and live out today the relevance of the scriptures (Cf. Heb 3:13.15; Lk 2:11; Mt 6:11; Dt 10:19).
The Alberionian Paradigm of the Contents of Our Evangelization
In Paul’s perspective, Alberione’s paradigm is constituted by the word everything (tutto), particularly when it refers to the interlocutors and the contents of our mission: “We must bring the whole (tutto) Christ to man and give the whole (tutto) man to God, for Jesus Christ” .
Let us analyze this expression better:
– “The whole Christ”: Alberione is seeking among the genuine sources of Christian life and spirituality the global content of our editions/productions: Sacred Scripture and Liturgy .
– “The whole man to God, for Christ”: Alberione means by this the necessity of man to live in Christ Jesus with all his being and in all his being .
– “All this, from the Church”: Alberione inserts our mission into the life of the Church, the column and foundation of truth (Heb 3:10; 1Tm 3:15), to transmit, with a guarantee of authenticity the contents of the evangelization. Our apostolic action has a reason for existing only inasmuch as it is “in Cristo et in Ecclesia” (CISP, 179).
The Alberionian Pastoral Directives in the Content and Form of Evangelization
1° Give, above all else, the doctrine that saves with the explicit announcement of the Christian mystery and the catechesis that makes one’s faith grow in relation to one’s life. These must be given primacy because it is the proximate rule of our faith.
2° Give the Word of God, because it is the model from which the apostle who is writing must inspire himself. Furthermore it is the book that we must show with our DVDs, press, radio, discs, and films and with all the means that the Lord prepares for us .
3° Speak of everything in a Christian way. Even if the press takes care of all the neces-sary fields, of all the works and initiatives, it must include catechesis, culture, the sci-ences, education, formation, legislation ; that is, it must penetrate all of human thought and knowledge with the Gospel (AD, 87).
This paradigm determines the meaning of the Pauline Publisher. Therefore, one must conclude that the lines and projects realized in production (on one hand, books, maga-zines, music, DVDs, radio programs, appearances on television; and on the other, the programs of courses and initiatives to animate of a cultural, biblical, and catechitcal nature) must transmit the message of the faith in an explicit and integral manner to the whole human person. In this light, it is necessary to verify whether our publisher is truly Pauline, that is, if it is inspired by St. Paul. Thus, we need explicit and clear points of reference that may orient all those who work in the various areas of our pub-lishers.
9. CRITERIA OF OUR PUBLISHING LINES
1. The Centrality of the Word of God Today in the Church
The work of Alberione inserts itself into the biblical movement of the Church of the beginnings of the XX century. In 1893, Leo XIII reaffirmed the importance in the Church of reading and studing the Sacred Scriptures, with the encyclical Providentis-simus Deus. His successors continued in the same line, and Alberione took inspiration from them, recommending his sons and daughters: “We must consider it an obligation never to stop reading the Bible (…). When the Gospel is always carried with us and practiced, then our progress will be evident and the institute will make great strides, and we will fulfill the mission God has entrusted to us in the Church”.
Beginning with Vatican II, there awakened an unprecedented interest in the Bible, es-pecially in the New Testament. The Bible has ceased to be a “veiled” book, or one that interests few people; it has become a text of radical importance for all. Currently, the XII Ordinary Assembly of the Synod, on the theme: “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church”, is of exceptional importance for the life of the Church and of humanity. The XXXI Ordinary Conference of Aparecida in Latin America and in the Caribbean and the projects for the continental mission of Latin America consider the Bible the main foundation of formation for missionary disciples and for the Christian life in general.
Thus, the Biblical Pastoral activity and the Biblical animation of the Pastoral activ-ity have become a phenomenon of considerable importance for today’s evangelization and catechesis, which will arouse a profound ecclesial renewal and a new missionary impulse. The Sacred Scripture – since it offers divine revelation – is “wisdom” that animates and forms the disciple in the following of Jesus, Head of his Body, and thus it cannot be lacking in any pastoral programme. This means that the Word – as Grace and Love – is an indispensable mediation for encountering the living Christ.
The circumstances and the method are relevant , because they favor an ample knowl-edge of the origins, developments and limits of the Bible. Facilitating a reading from different situations and needs will allow us to place different moral, political, cultural, and mystical emphases in the life of each person. The important thing is that in reflec-tion, the whole Christian community may perceive the substantial elements as well as the marginal aspects of the testimonies that are transmitted and the faith that is lived out. The reading and interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures begins anew in every ep-och, with every culture, with each individual, opening itself up to a future that is always fuller, which takes on and completes the preceding positions .
For some time now, greater value has been given to the human communication mani-fested in the Bible, that is, the value of the oral traditions, and traditions of the people or communities where the various writings took shape; the value of the redactor; the influence of the environment and the culture. The Bible is appreciated today, more than before, as an ensemble of vital expressions, witnesses of historical experiences of the faith. They are writings born from life, for life. Because of this, today the commu-nicative dimension is valued, without leaving aside the presence of God in the process of formation of the writings. This presupposes that the reader can enter into the world of the biblical authors, their history, the circumstances that have influenced them; he or she can enter into their feelings, convictions and existential expectations. Only in this way can we appreciate the sacred texts as bearers of messages pertinent for the man of today and not as biographies or ethical, philosophical or theological treatises .
Valuing the human dimension of the Bible does not reduce the importance of its sacred character. On the contrary, it situates it in the world where it originated and was elabo-rated . Thus, it is necessary to value its cradle, its historical-cultural moment. The bib-lical writer has been inspired by God in an everyday environment. So it was for the prophets and St. Paul. It is a question of fidelity to the original message of the author. Without a doubt it is Word of God, infused by Him, expressed in human terms that are historically and culturally situated. As a result it is subject to many limitations and conditionings. This leads us to overcome a fundamentalist reading of the Bible .
Hermeneutics is important in order not to fall into superficial, naïve, or dogmatic an-swers. That is, it protects us from the trap of subjectivism, of “ideological” prejudices, of the manipulations and deformations of its message. Thus, it is indispensable that the biblical contents of our publications utilize correctly the sources of our roots, those from which our Christian identity derives.
2. The Centrality of Jesus Christ
Pope Ratzinger himself, in his book Jesus of Nazareth , which has become irreplace-able for its Christian and Catholic culture, warns that his writing is “only the expression of his personal search for the Lord’s face”. And thus, everyone is free to contradict it . From this perspective he confronts the question of the real Jesus, the historical Jesus, in the true and proper sense.
The exegetical and theological problems of the historical and critical methods proper to the investigation of the last centuries, regarding the question of the historical Jesus and the Jesus of faith, demand from us Paulines and Pauline Sisters an attention to the con-tents we publish about Jesus.
We must progress in a theological interpretation and a more acute exegetical sensibility, one that will guarantee a “living relation with Jesus the Way, Truth and Life”, so that our people may find strength in Him, as the document of Aparecida suggests. With this intuition, it is necessary to overcome the profound disconnect between the historical Jesus and the Jesus of faith, because the Jesus of faith without the Jesus of history be-comes “subjective fideism”, and the historical Jesus without the Jesus of faith degener-ates into “meaningless archaeology” . If this situation does not come about, the au-thentic point of reference with Jesus Christ remains uncertain . Rudolf Schnackenburg, one of the most important Catholic exegetes of the mid-twentieth century, perceived the danger of this situation for the faith, in his book, “The Person of Jesus Christ Reflected in the Four Gospels”.
The encyclical Divino afflante Spiritu , from 1943, important for Catholic exegesis, already opened the doors to the use of the historical-critical method in Catholic theol-ogy. From that time new steps have been taken and other methodological visions have been developed, both for what concerns historically rigorous historical work as well as for the collaboration between theology and the historical method in interpreting Sacred Scripture.
A decisive step was taken by the Constitution Dei Verbum , on Divine Revelation, when it clearly separates, as a principle of theological exegesis, the unity of the biblical texts, adding that one must consider the living tradition of the whole Church, the anal-ogy of faith and the internal correlation of the faith (Cf. DV, 12).
Important perspectives in the field of “Methods and criteria for interpretation” and exe-getical investigation are found in the two documents of the Pontifical Biblical Commis-sion: “The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church” and “The Jewish People and its Sacred Scriptures in the Christian Bible” .
Modern exegesis has shown that the words transmitted in the Bible become Scripture through an ever new process of rereading: the ancient texts are found in a new situation, and are read and understood in a new way.
To conclude, I wish to cite once more the words of Ratzinger in the introduction to the book mentioned above: “The historical method continues to be indispensable for the structure of the Christian faith. So much so that we cannot renounce it in exegetical work. For the biblical faith it is fundamental to refer to real historical facts. They are a constitutive foundation of the history of salvation. With the “et incarnatus est”, we profess the effective entrance of God into real history. If we neglect this history, the Christian faith is eliminated and transformed into another religion. If history is an es-sential part of the Christian faith, the historical method must confront it. The very faith itself requires it .
3. Do Not Speak Only of Religion, But of Everything in a Christian Way (AD 87).
Everything which is true and just, everything that is worthy of love (Phil 4:8), is the object of our publications. Therefore, the change of epoch, cultural and religious plu-ralism, interculturality and interdisciplinarity interrogate us regarding the language and content to offer the people of today’s world, under the experience of life in the Spirit.
1. Listening to the Spirit in History teaches us: the art of inculturating the contents, language and forms of the message of salvation for the peoples; the way of discovering new faces of the society; the possibility of opening ourselves up to dialogue and ecu-menical and interreligious collaboration with our identity as Paulines and Pauline Sis-ters in the Church.
The consequence will be the ability to transmit the certainty of the Spirit that breaks into history, touches and pushes persons individually and socially towards God, to-wards interiority and action. As a result, the love that comes from the Father and the Son is translated in history as solidarity, justice, fraternity beyond borders. The Spirit does his part and is the builder of the unity of the relations. It announces freedom to prisoners, sight to the blind, frees the oppressed and manifests the year favorable to the Lord (Cf. Lk 4:18ff).
2. The Mission in the Heart of the World. Our publications take on the responsibility of convoking and committing all persons of good will to collaborate in the process of humanizing society. That is, they send out an appeal to all human beings to commit themselves in the mission to build up the human family in the “common house of crea-tion”.
3. All that is Human is Ours. The situation and problems of humanity make up part of our apostolic concerns, just as they did for Don Alberione. They made up part of the development of his vocation, in the context in which he lived, when asked himself the question: in what direction is humanity walking? We must communicate the an-nouncement of the Jesus of the Gospel as the light of God and paradigm for all the problems and situations that humanity is living.
Therefore, we look to the whole society, with it aspirations, its projects, its humanism and its thirst for God, just as Paul did. This implies knowing the society with its eco-nomic, social, ecological, cultural and democratic crisis, in situations of poverty, vio-lence and persecution. In addition, it means considering it when constructing common projects, gestures of solidarity and prospects for a better future. Keeping in mind this panorama, it is necessary to propose another alternative to the world, as a metaphor and symbol of the novelty of the kingdom, which is found among us. It is still necessary to clarify that the new humanity is a work of the Spirit. We await it and collaborate with all our being and our mission so that it may come about.
4. Consider Peoples and Cultures Universally in a great supportive “web”, that in their diversity can aim at creating union (Cf. Jn 21:11), sharing the gratuity in order to guar-antee worthy living conditions: health, food, education, homes and work for all. Jesus tells us, with his practical life, that he who has nothing, the excluded ones, are the man-agers of the Church’s mission, participants in God’s project, because with them a space is opened up to show the signs of justice and the reasons for our hope. Taking this as our point of departure, in an ever more pluralistic society, we will be able to integrate our strengths, which will allow us to build a just, reconciled and supportive world.
5. All the Baptized are Missionary Disciples of Jesus. From this criterion is born our commitment to be formators of all the missionary disciples among the baptized. Be-cause of this the document of Aparecida recommends following “more carefully the stages of the first announcement, the Christian initiation and the maturing in the faith” . Here, coherency between faith and life should be promoted, as well as the incarna-tion of the values of the Kingdom, insertion in the community to be able to give reasons for our hope and to discover the service that the Lord asks of each one in the Church and in society.
6. Assume an Ecclesiology of Communion in a world that promotes individualism and personal interest. The diversity of charisms, ministries and services opens the horizon to the daily exercise of communion, putting one’s gifts at the disposition of others and allowing charity to circulate (Cf. 1Cor 12:4-12). In this way the ecclesial community becomes a “house and school of communion” (NMI, 43). Therefore it is indispensible to encourage experiences of communion in the dioceses and parishes . This is done to in turn to form disciple communities, which are missionary, welcoming, integrative and supportive, that manifest the new man in Christ. This includes welcoming the figures of the prophets and pilgrims who denounce the situations of sin, the unjust structures, and who announce the values of the full life in Christ.
7. The Human Dignity and the Good News of Life. Putting our mission at the service of the full life. “I have come so that they may have life and have it to the full” (Jn 10:10). The announcement of Jesus Christ regards the whole human being and brings him to develop his existence “in the personal, familial, social and cultural dimensions” . The living conditions of many abandoned people, excluded and ignored in their mi-series and sorrows, go against the plan of the Father and urge believers on to greater commitment towards them. Under this aspect it is necessary to underline the insepara-ble relation between love for God and love of one’s neighbor. Considering the context in which a great part of the population lives, our production must demonstrate that the message is at the service of life, particularly in those dehumanizing situations that are incompatible with the hope of the Kingdom.
8. Ecology. Announcing the Good News to reestablish order in the environment, and promote a favorable conscience that is committed to conservation, as John Paul II did when he launched an appeal to all the leaders of our planet to protect and conserve the nature, created by God. From this perspective, we cannot permit our world to become an ever more degraded and degrading land .
9. Promote Education and the Intellectual and Political World. The Church in its edu-cative task must create, with its agents in this field, spaces of formation and prophetic dialogue, for the purpose of forming witnesses of the Good News of the Kingdom in the contemporary world. This implies the consolidation in politicians and legislators of a Christian conscience that may favor the construction of a just and fraternal society, according to the principles of the Social Doctrine of the Church (DA, p. 2).
10. The Communication of Evangelization. We Paulines and Pauline Sisters, with the force of our charism, are convoked to intervene in the new historical social and eccle-sial situations, to communicate the Good News of the Kingdom, in the appropriate forms and according to our experience of faith, coordinated and integr

While studying in Rome to complete a Master's in philosophy, I began translating part-time to supplement my income, and have continued to work up to the present, while I begin work on my Doctorate (in philosophy). I have recently founded University Translation Center, a small translation agency specializing in academic texts. We are a growing agency, with many new excellent translators.
Experiences in translating: I have had the opportunity to translate several books (one of them published: Sciences and the Fullness of Rationality), and learn innumerable things about history, scripture, earthquakes, hermeneutic philosophy, itineraries to the Holy Land, the artistic riches of Rome (I have had the fortune to be Opera Pellegrinaggi's official English to Italian translator sinc 2007), little-known anecdotes about Rome's history, and much more through my translating projects. I am happy to work in this field and look forward to many more stimulating and educative projects that will enlarge my knowledge of the world, other cultures and career fields.
I hold two Master's degrees - one in philosophy from the Pontifical Lateran University (Rome) and one in Sacred Scripture from Augustine Institute (Denver). I have a bachelor's in philosophy from Regis University (Denver). I recently successfully presented my licentiate thesis in philosophy ("The notion of 'religaciòn' in the philosophy of Xavier Zubiri") to complete my degree 'summa cum laude' from the Lateran University.
