Hi all,
I'm looking for some help translating the phrase "un sas de décantation" into English. The full sentence is as follows:"Cette rencontre est un sas de décantation pour permettre à John de se « laver », se purifier.
It is a technical term but used in metaphorical sense in an academic essay to describe a scene in literature. Many thanks for any suggestions in advance!

Comment: "Thank you very much for your input. I think this is exactly what is meant. The links really helped me to clarify the meaning so thank you very much! The character is supposed to be transitioning from a less "pure" state to a more "pure" more "godlike" form as a result of this encounter. It alludes to Greek mythology a lot and stories where characters have been "cleansed." I think the notion of purgatory that you mentioned is probably a very closely related concept. I think the best translation as you suggested is therefore something along the lines of "transitional phase" or "space." Best wishes! "

OK - that's a "bac" but it seems to be the same sense. A débourbeur for letting silt settle.

"un sas" is in its essence a device allowing the transition between two states: between two different air pressures, between contaminated and clean air, between air and water, between two sections of canal of different water level etc.
here this "transitional lock" (chamber?) is used for "shedding impurities" [letting them settle on the bottom] so "purification" makes sense

I think that tank/compartment/room don't really work here at all. Yes, it's an analogy with a settling tank where things become clarified as the sediment settles but I think it has to be rephrased. I think it's probably to do with clarifying muddy thinking/thoughts.
I quite like Sam's "breathing space" as well but not sure it matches context or keeps the "decanting" image.
So, something like:
this encounter/meeting gives John (the) space to allow things settle (allow things become resolved) and to clarify his thinking/clear his mind/help him get a clear perspective on his life.
Not really sure if you can use "cleanse" or "purify" here?

I think in this case though the work of literature in question is referring to a 'spiritual cleansing' or a metaphorical transition to a purer state so I think the more abstract terms are probably ok in this case.
