попадалась такая формулировка
хотя натуральнее звучит quit или withdrawn, однако в бюрократическо-канцелярском оригинале (вдумайтесь: отчислен по собственному желанию!) есть что-то ненатуральное.

: I would say "withdrawn", but the point is that "otchislen" is a past participle: some registrar is the agent of action, not the student, although it was at his request

More naturally they would use the word “year” in a college/university context.
Thus the translation would be:
was voluntarily excluded on the 4th year…
A dictionary says:
