Discussion

Maria Fokin Aug 28, 2014:
do you mean Treccani? yes, you are right about the definition of fitoparassita. Phytoparasites is used in the same way in English. (see some of the references I gave in my answer.)

In Biotechnology (by Patil and Biradar) the definition is given as:
Phytoparasite: (adj: phytoparasitic) Parasite on plants.

The number of internet hits that wrongly define phytoparasite/fitoparasite as a parasitic plant/parassita vegetale is significant. One really has to be careful!
Cedric Randolph Aug 28, 2014:
Parassita delle piante - this is the definition given for fitoparassita by Tre Cani. One of the more authoritative sources for the Italian language. It is used, to mean plant parasites, such as nematodes, insects or fungi, in all of the farming specifications written in Italy for the different DOP, Quality trademarks, etc. in Italy
Maria Fokin Aug 28, 2014:
I don't either plant parasite or parasite feeding on plants? boh

philgoddard Aug 28, 2014:
I don't really understand this - fitoparassita means phytoparasite means parasitic plant, and yet, from the context, the meaning is clearly plant parasites.

the exact context in which the word "fitoparassita" appears would have helped a lot.

nematode fitoparassita = phytoparasitic nematodes
I see no reason to simplify the terminology. Phytoparasitic is extensively used in literature. If the authors wanted to say plant parasites they would have said parassiti delle piante :-)

Studies regarding the nematofauna associated with chestnut have been done by
MACARA (1987), reporting nine species of phytoparasitic nematodes.
