Discussion

Veronika McLaren (asker) Mar 12, 2014:
Yes, thank you Vera, I had also run into this as a possible "explanation"
Veronika McLaren (asker) Mar 12, 2014:
That's just the problem... I can look at all the various translations, but as the ppt is in point form, both "Grenzbereiche" and "Schwerpunkte" is used in different and not very clear ways. I think Andrew and Vera are probably closest.
Johanna Timm, PhD Mar 12, 2014:
Grenzbereich 1. Bereich, an dem zwei Gebiete aneinandergrenzen oder 2. extremer Bereich/Grauzone - in welcher Bedeutung wird der Begriff in dem Text verwendet?
mill2 Mar 12, 2014:
Context! Can you give an example of what a Grenzbereich is?
Vera H. Mar 12, 2014:
Andrew's Answer seems appropriate for your context, or even "marginal" areas
Veronika McLaren (asker) Mar 12, 2014:
The slide show is about R&D in Germany - funding sources, relationship to GDP and the industry, i.e. research at universities and in the private sector.
Vera H. Mar 12, 2014:
More Context Can you provide more context, maybe the complete sentence or sentences surrounding the text? Is it the description of course work for a degree (Diplom), or does the text appear within a paper?

Frontier Research

A simple definition of frontier research could be “research taking place at the frontiers of knowledge,” perhaps qualifying this definition with “in a particular area or field.” This definition is clearly somewhat imprecise, however. Indeed, arguably it dodges the question, as it pushes the definition back a step, to the question of the frontiers of knowledge, and fails to offer a distinguishing feature with which to identify frontier research as all research is about something unknown and can potentially contribute new knowledge.

Another good option, thanks!

(research) at the edges

Others have correctly pointed out there are at least two different definitions involved here. Overlapping fields of study is one of them but it looks to me that 'interdisziplinäre Forschung in Grenzbereichen' is mentioned first for a reason and points in a different direction.

Compare with example below:

"We are considering here the effects of democratizing research at the edges of our respective fields, a back to the future move as Strafford [29] suggests in her study of the beginnings of 17th century science."

Research in "boundary areas" also sounds appropriate but probably not "fringe areas" as many would associate that term with outlandish or discredited ideas...

'Grenzbereiche' may also include research at the "frontier of our knowledge" although the focus is more on the "edges" of scientific disciplines, IMO.
Note from asker:
Thank you - reference sounds convincing, too.
