English term

home-recorded

English to French Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
In a list of items you are forbidden to bring to a clinical research study unit:
- Home recorded videotapes

Does this refer to movies showing your family on vacation for instance, or to videotapes you recorded yourself on TV, like a football game?

Discussion

Tony M Oct 15, 2013:
@ Daryo I do take your point, but at the same time, if they are specifically excluding home-recorded tapes, the implication is that one would still be allowed to bring in pre-recorded tapes, and hence still bore the pants off other people with endless episodes of 'The Forsyte Saga' etc.

It seems to me the issue is indeed very much one of control over content; otherwise, surely they would just have said "ALL videotapes are forbidden" (and you'll just have to make do with watching the 2 cassettes we already have of 'I Love Lucy' and 'Bewitched')?
Tony M Oct 15, 2013:
@ Adrien The point is that 'official' pre-recorded tapes will have a proper printed label and maybe even display case, so it is easy for the authorities to check what is (supposedly!) on them; whereas with home-recorded tapes, this is not possible.
I've been involved with a lot of clinical trials, and even more videotapes, so I know the sort of issues at stake here.

There is a good way round it, by the way: you simply record your porn over a pre-recorded tape of 'My Little Pony' or 'On Golden Pond' or something ;-)
Platary (X) Oct 15, 2013:
@ Solen Pour mettre un terme à diverses élucubrations, pourriez-vous donner d'autres exemples de ce qui est interdit ? Cela pourrait être décisif comme orientation. Merci.
Daryo Oct 15, 2013:
Just a guess whatever is the content of these tapes, I think the idea is to avoid people bringing their favorite tapes and trying to impose them on other participants - preventing arguments about what to watch.
Another element: who is still using VHS tapes? They should update their Terms & Conditions!
HERBET Abel Oct 15, 2013:
Il n'y a pas que des virus informatiques
Tony M Oct 15, 2013:
@ Asker I would say it pretty obviously covers BOTH those types of tapes, i.e. ones where the user themself has originated the content, and also, where they simply recorded third-party content.
The point presumably being to avoid the even accidental introduction of, for example, porn material.

One assumes this is some kind of residential programme, in which case, they would presumably seek to ensure that everything remains squeaky clean.

To answer Adrien's point, from the way it is worded in EN, i.e. home-recorded videotapes, I DO think it is about the content rather than the actual cassettes; it wouldn't be that difficult to sterilize them, if contamination was really the only issue.
Platary (X) Oct 15, 2013:
Bonsoir Je pense que cela n'a aucun rapport avec le contenu, mais l'objet lui-même. Cassettes vidéo personnelles. Sans doute une question de stérilisation ou de désinfection ?

agree Tony M : Yes, though if this is talking about videotapes, I doubt virus is the issue so much as possible content ;-)

agree Daryo : although VHS tapes can't spread viruses (not the computer variant anyway); the rationale is somewhere else...

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : In EN, at least, pre-recorded videotapes specifically means shop-bought ones, i.e. NOT home recorded ones.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think that is arguably too restrictive, and also probably concentrates on the wrong aspect here; imagine if these were (illegal!) home copies of professionally-produced porn videos ;-)

enregistré à la maison

Personnellement, je mettrais "cassettes vidéo enregistrées à la maison", ce n'est ni moins ni plus ambigu qu'en anglais.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I think that is too restrictive; it could be undesirable porn material, but filmed in the woods...

neutral Daryo : although it does say " home-recorded",I think the main point is that these tapes are a personal choice - someone's favourite tapes.
