Spanish term

’S [presentación medicamento]

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals
The medicinal product is described as follows

Caja x 14’S / Caja x 98 'S

I understand that primary and secondary packaging contain 14 tablets and 98 tablets, respectively.

But I am intrigued to know what the 'S stands for.

Thanks for help!!!

Andreas THEODOROU (asker) Dec 18, 2012:
My guess is that the apostrophe evolved as a wildcard character representing "e" "a" or "o" (since Spanish plurals end in -es -as or -os)

Link - Phil / Lorena Phil: the same link posted for another question has Cajas " 'S " (at the top).

I don´t know if it makes sense, but I asked someone who has medical experience as I certainly don't, and the person said the Caja x 10 'S, Caja x 20 'S, 30 'S, etc., and that the "S" meant it came in tens, twenties, thirties, or whatever, if that makes any sense or is of any help! (as in this example).

Thanks. That does seem to support my suggestion.

@phil that makes a lot of sense, apparently 3 different versions can be used see here:

Could the S be the English plural suffix with what we Brits call a greengrocer's apostrophe, ie one that shouldn't be there? So they're calling the packs 14s and 98s? Just a guess.
Andreas THEODOROU (asker) Dec 17, 2012:
the document is Colombian Spanish FYI
Andreas THEODOROU (asker) Dec 17, 2012:
. Thanks for the answer but it's not likely because packaging is in blister strips
lorenab23 Dec 17, 2012:
Maybe? the S may stand for "sobres" see here

PROTOS CAJA X 14 S

It's just the number of units in the pack. We do the same with cigarettes, referring to packs of 20 as "20s", as my reference shows.

COMPRIMIDOS

En mi opinión, 'S puede referirse a los comprimidos que vienen en la caja. Ej: CAJA DE 14 COMPRIMIDOS/ CAJA DE 98 COMPRIMIDOS. Espero te sea de ayuda, saludos!
Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : But why would they abbreviate comprimidos to S?
